Tor Project releases a browser extension that lets you help censored users access the Tor Network

Quote

While we take internet access for granted, there are several regions in the world where people have little or censored access to the internet. The Tor project has always put in efforts to defeat censorship on the internet.

Taking this motto one step forward, the Tor project has released a new browser extension called ‘Snowflake.’ People who are censored can use Snowflake to access the internet.

Enabling this extension essentially turns your browser into a proxy that connects Tor users in censored regions to the Tor network. You can volunteer to help such people just by installing the addon.

Source: https://fossbytes.com/snowflake-addon-helps-censored-users-access-tor-network/

The official website seems to be: https://snowflake.torproject.org/ and you can find in it links to the Mozilla and Chrome addon stores' listing of that extension:

I really like the concept and it seems quiet easy to immediately turn your browser into a proxy that functions as the middle man between the censored user and the Tor Network (no requests are made through you to the Internet, you're just a middle man, as is stated in the official website: "There is no need to worry about which websites people are accessing through your proxy. Their visible browsing IP address will match their Tor exit node, not yours.")

However for this anti-censorship method to work there needs to be a really huge number of people running these snowflake proxies.

I like how it's basically no risk to the "Snowflakes" as you are basically providing an entrance node to the TOR network, but not an exit node. So all the traffic through your connection will be anonymous and encrypted, with no risk of somebody coming after you for accessing child porn or something.

A browser version of running a Tor bridge, yes.

You know what else would work?

A program by the western nations that would provide free laptops with wireless capabilities, combined with global wifi coverage to allow at least the ability for these peoples to watch Youtube.

Probably have to include solar charges.

Airdrop them in, smuggle them in, etc. HELL, and I cannot believe I am saying this, even chromebooks would work. Those are cheap as dirt.

Be interesting to see how China would react to global wifi coverage. Probably very negatively.

A better question is how the ISPs would react... they'd never allow this. As for China, they could just sniff your wifi packets - open wifi has no encryption. Besides just seeing that there are packets coming from your wifi adapter to the satellite would be enough to get you trouble...

Also Musk wanted to do something like that but there are concerns that the thousands of satellites necessary would be a serious problem for astronomers and future space missions. Perhaps we should work to have an internet connection be considered a human right and enforce that right internationally instead of just throwing more money at the problem.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

That doesn't exist in these countries.

Also ISP's can't really prevent another company from doing this. Maybe the US government could, claiming that it could potentially be a threat to future space launches sure.

The US government is so deep in the pockets of ISPs that for all intents and purposes there's no distinction. And the clogging of Earth orbit is a real problem, it's not the US government that's complaining - as if they gave a shit about the environment or scientific endeavor - it's scientists around the world.

Then maybe let's make sure that it gets enforced in countries where human rights (ostensibly) exist before we worry about China. Also violations of human rights allow for sanctions.

Since there are ways to jam any signal they would simply fill the wifi radio spectrum with crap....

Where would you get all the needed funding? Idea: There are talks about Bitcoin being banned in China, maybe that can motivate some to invest in anti-censorship tech that works in China.

What I was thinking too. Had they really wanted to, China could simply launch a new standard running on a tightly controlled frequency, and just jam 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz to oblivion.

No, we shouldn't.

Internet is not a human right, never can be a human right, and should not be seen as a human right. It is a privilege and a luxury.

So unfettered access to information and the exchange of ideas is something that should only be afforded to the powerful, rich, and privileged among us?

In first world countries, it isn't. The only people that don't have access are those that refuse to work, are momentarily poor, or are financial disasters.

Trying to prop up internet access as a human right is a bad joke.

That, we're in agreement.

I cannot agree to the notion of governments guaranteeing "free" internet to all citizens.

The tax dollars subsidizing the ISP's means that their "labor" is our labor. We paid for it whether you like it or not, @Drak3. The rights afforded to us must be protected at all times even as we reach new methods of doing so.

I 100% agree with you there.

There is literally nothing that you can do on the internet that cannot be done in another way, therefore it is a luxury.

That's not to say it shouldn't be available, just that it shouldn't be a right for you to have access to it. The internet should just be used as a tool to exercise your rights

You're saying that everyone has a right to internet access.

If you can't apply to a job online by having access to the internet, how are you going to find work?

Do you think every building or business has a job postings board?

Do you think every small business that still does paper can just take everyone in?

Do you think that poor communities that can't afford internet are going to have the ability to apply to job boards that are increasingly becoming online only?

Quote

That includes those that refuse to work.

That also includes those that can't work. Or those that have been searching for a job for two years and get knocked out of the unemployment population. It includes those that are trying to find better jobs.

Have any other BS you'd like to share?
