No they have no point at all. It's them being greedy. You can hurt yourself changing your oil or fixing your car so never do it yourself. You can hurt yourself painting your house so never do that. Don't do wood working because you can hurt yourself. Don't play games because you can hurt yourself. It's a stupid point that has no validity. People should instead being educated how not to hurt themselves and repair electronics

No. Not right.

 

If they wanted people not to be harmed, they would make the chips and various parts used in Apple products easily available for purchase (at reasonable prices) by service people along with schematics and documentation, instead of forcing you to go through authorized apple repair places that are not allowed to do board level repairs, only full board replacements that cost a lot of money (sometimes several times more than what an actual board costs to manufacture).

This way people would not have to risk anything and could just go to any repair place to have their stuff replaced with genuine parts instead of parts removed from other circuit boards of products that died due to other reasons (because there's no legal way to buy them new)

 

It's all about control over the products and about forcing you to replace instead of repair, or to upgrade instead of repair... both more profitable.

That's basically "security through obscurity"  - you can say the same thing about PCs or any other phone. Apple products are not more secure because they don't publish information or repair information.

In fact they're often hacked or viruses made for it, simply because of its popularity - virus makers and hackers will always target devices that have the biggest market share.

 

Hackers will circumvent protections anyway...

I personally don’t agree with it, but they do have a point.

 

I upgraded the hard drive in my old 24” iMac a couple years ago, and the power supply was fully exposed. If someone hurts themselves while working on an apple product it is a bad look for apple.

But let's go with it...

Simple fix: if you HAVE to use an open power supply, design the case in such a way that you'd have to remove power cable in order to open case ... for example add a sliding bit of plastic cover a screw, and have power cable block you from sliding out the plastic to get access to the screw. Therefore, you'd be forced to remove cable to completely remove the cover.

Problem solved, user safe.

You're a bit off on this. Even an open power supply, which has been unplugged, is still extremely deadly. 

 

While I can agree with the idea that a company should be allowed to void your warranty if you open their products, you as a consumer should be allowed to do so, free to break your product if you screw up.

 

It's not so much that I agree or disagree with R2R, it's more the way that these companies are going about it. It reminds me when Apple told lawmakers that once you open an Apple and attempt to repair it, you're turning it into a PC

Someone's never heard of bleeder resistors , discharge ICs ... majority of modern power supplies from brand name companies will be safe within seconds from the moment you unplug them.

Granted, it's still a 1 in let's say 10k chance that maybe something went wrong and a safety measure failed and a capacitor would still be charged, but even if that's the case you're still looking at maybe 95% a person would just be scared by the sudden shock and get a mild electric burn on fingers and that's about it...the capacitor discharges and power supply becomes safe.

A small percentage of people could have heart conditions or have their hands wet or be more susceptible and the milliseconds long zap could cause their heart to go into fibrillation or scare them hard enough to fall and break their necks or whatever... but that's edge cases.

 

Anyway.. police state, nanny state... as long as the safety warnings say keep away from this area because there MAY be high voltages, it's enough of a disclaimers, no need to make laws to ban people from opening products.

This is sad. If I was with Apple, I would just make the repairs more affordable and be more honest with my customers.

 

Imagine for a moment that you decided to buy a house and pay it fully in cash, the house is yours to keep. Let's also add a lifetime warranty to make this more relatable. Then the realtor tells you that you can't fix nor do any remodeling with the house unless you do it thru his company (which would cost ten times more than the normal amount if you would've done it thru another reliable company). Doing it yourself also voids the warranty.

 

I mean ownership exists, right? ?

... well i do NOT agree with apples policy, when watching Rossmans videos, it however is quite visible that many both officiel and unofficial repair centers and private persons have no idea of what they are doing.

 

since he in many instances fixes poor repair work.

 

but that does not mean that people arent allowed to kill their own products, access to spareparts, would make it easier to fix if needed.

 

Many automtive companies use the same strategy, also forcing costumers to buy full modules to fix simple issues, because of cloosed loop systems.

I’m 100% behind right to repair, if my toaster breaks I should be able to fix it.

 

Im also behind right to upgrade, don’t solder RAM to the Mobo, let me add or remove sticks. Same goes for battery and hard drive etc.

 

I do see an exception for water proof/resistant gear however, I am happy to forfeit my right to repair in exchange for keeping water out of my delicate electronic components.
