Why are you a computer enthusiast?

NachozR4Ever

Why are you a computer enthusiast?  What fuels and fascinates your interest for the latest and highest-end hardware?  Beyond the performance benefits, and the new applications they extend, what is it about the advancement of consumer technologies that seduces our interest, captures our imagination, fills us with awe, constantly captivates, and perseverates in our minds?   I have been a PC Hardware enthusiast for as long as I can remember, and I love it all!  Over the years I have followed the headlines, news, trends, and reviews: as I have continued to purchase, enjoy, and share my experiences.  – I absolutely love the enthusiast’s community on the Web, Reddit, and YouTube, and really appreciate all the outstanding content from:  Linus Tech Tips, Paul’s Hardware, Kyle at BitWit, Steve at Gamer’s Nexus, Wendell at Level1Tech Tips, JayzTwoCents, the Hardware Canucks, and of course the Kit Gurus!

This morning, as I was diligently working on rearranging yet another system in the basement; having another wonderful weekend morning, when my sweet grandmother, politely posed this question to me.  She asked me countless follow-up questions with such a naïve, yet sincere curiosity, I became increasingly perplexed that I really couldn’t explain what exactly I loved about RGB lights, my countless computers, routers, keyboards, and gadgets; or why I spend the endless hours actively enjoying the hobby, while learning a little  more about the science behind it. I’m going to post this question around, hoping to see if I can find some interesting, sincere, and comedic responses to this honest question from all my favorite channels and their followers.  Thank you!

I read your novel all the way through. Your dad doesn't give a sh*T about RGB so why would your grandmother lol.  I think us as consumers and most LTT members love speed and a powerful computer which doesn't ever hick up using 32GB minimum ram and SSD.  I was very fascinated with SSD when they came out around 2008 I believe.  I did soo much research at the tehcnology I knew exactly how it works compared to a mechnical hard drive.  I finally dove in after it had come to the masses.  I was using a Core 2 Quad and boy did it give it some new life.  SSD is the best upgrade you can make coming from HDD crap unless their external HDD's for backup, that is ok.

You remember the prodigy days AOL ,, Then with WIndows 95 came MSN internet and it was free.  We were in awe it was showing a 3D of the white house lol.  Boy have we come a long way.

Idle hands are the devils workplace, I find working with Adult Legos to be soothing, and keeps me busy.

I enjoy the challenge of learning something, given the plethora of information (good and bad) available.

I enjoy doing something outside the norm with PC's - making things work, frankensteining, and most recently just learning how to be crafty with my mods.

Just did this for fun with an 2012 HP Pro 6300 Microtower...stuff it full of goodies...because Adult Legos.  Finished the loop 2 days ago.  Good times were had.

I love your answers!  They're hilarious and insightful!  --But try considering a more specific element to the question:  Why does it seem like everyone follows the same trends in aesthetic design, with the same sort of enthusiasm as you find in the automotive or fashion industry?  It is a very flattering form of positive imitation, which I find myself following as well: I am in no way complaining, but why?   At bottom, my question is what force drives this passion and creates this herd like behavior towards the prevailing customs and conventions across an industry as open, free, and limitless as the Personal Computer?  Where does your ultimate motivation come from?  Why does our collective volition to create, move in such predictable patterns?   Why do we still endear such a satisfying sense of personal design to a pastime that continues to answer its banality by decisively separating their enthusiasts by the money they’ll spend at Amazon, rather than the genuine assortment of styles and variegated veins of genius they possess?  If you ask enough of these questions, the answer seems to inevitably be that the tech industry needs a strong artistic voice to lift the veils and cloaks from this laxed precession of unquestioned conformity, and courageously steer its evolution toward more creative pastors.

Well our generation grew up with computers, and I believe its very pertinent to stay on top of technology, no matter what field your in. I look at the old Gen X and whatnot who don't know how to use a computer, and think, 'wow they are thick, it's software designed to be simple'. They just get left behind.

One day I'll be like that with whatever new thing comes out, but you can best be sure it won't be for a long time.

Wow,  typical GenY/millennial response.   I was studying CPU design when you were still in nappies, if not before you were even born.     The generation before me pioneered the internet and made it what it is.

Being an enthusiast to me means being on the cutting edge of consumer electronics, seeing what isn't main stream yet and might even be impractical, but it is what is the current new standard. It is the derivative of where we are in our evolution. Seeing processing power advance, the possibility of VR, AR, how technology could change daily life on the whole and already has! But best of all, seeing what tomorrow has to bring, that's what keeps the enthusiast enthusiastic.

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Funny enough, the latest and greatest bores the absolute shite out of me.

I love seeing what modern and older budget hardware can pull off.

But more on the actual topic question, I guess I've always had a knack for figuring out what makes things tick and putting shit together, and well...

Radiator fluid, mixed metals - the skies the limit when you don't listen to manufacturers wanting you to just buy their stuff ;)

Actually I hate RGB lighting, all 'gaming' aesthetics look terrible to me but we all have our own tastes. I much prefer clean looks like brushed aluminium with contrasting black.

I'm not into the newest hardware and toys, but like to tinker with old tech. Opening up and figuring out how stuff works without the risk of real monetary loss has become somewhat of a hobby for me.

Everyone needs a hobby, right? One of my innate motivations has always been preservation, so that's where I'm coming from.

It's fun. Especially when everything just work after assembly.

Troubleshooting is a way for us to learn something as well and helping others who may have had a similar to what we've experience is a good feeling too.

.... But I don't think I'm an "enthusiast" anymore, I've pretty much lost a lot of my interest in in PC and gaming in general over the last couple years. To the point where I'm wondering if I really should buy a new PC or simply stop caring about it. I mostly just browse the internet and read some novels these days...
