How long will a typical CPU cooling fan last ?

Depends on the fan, mainly the bearing. I have a Fractal fan that lasted a single year but also 10+ years of use ones that are all good and well

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

That is about on average when I see fans in general die; but it of course depends on your use case, someone who runs their PC (thus fan) for 8 hours a day will have a different lifespan than someone who runs their PC 24/7.

 

Likely it will depend on the quality of fan, 6 years is just what I see happen often with normal use, with normal fans (can't speak for the more expensive fans, haven't seen those die that often.. Which might speak of their quality/lifespan).

in theory, its everlasting. its only magnet + copper wires

 

By "dying" do you you mean? fully stop/ squeaky noise?

aside from physical damage, only limited parts can go wrong,that is lubricant dried out/ the central rod is worn out.

Bearings are not everlasting and will eventually fail.  Good fans can last 6-10 years.

@dgsddfgdfhgs In theory, it may just be magnets and copper, but there is also control circuits on the bottom of the fan used to control the brush-less motors. That circuitry can also die. By dieng I don't mean slightly worn out. I mean when it stops spinning due to excessive wear and tear.

At least as long as warranty lasts. Only fan that I've needed to replace because it dying was my old laptops. Though none of them has been in 24/7 use. So oldest was in heavy use to very little use from 2001 to last summer.

The life span varies for different bearing types. Corsairs magnetic levitating fans will surpass any classic bearing for example. The longevity is directly dependant of the quality of the bearing. That's the mechanical part that will fail over time.
