Another security breach from Huawei

Microsoft discovered a security flaw in the Device Manager drivers of some laptops of Huawei's Matebook line. According to Microsoft, Huawei then patched this and acted professionally.

Microsoft security researchers discovered a security flaw in Huawei’s device manager driver for the Matebook line of Windows 10 PCs that could undermine low-level kernel protections, not unlike the WannaCry backdoor the NSA developed and then was leaked to the public. The news comes at the heels of Huawei being accused by the U.S. government and other governments of being an espionage arm for the Chinese government. ZDNetfirst reported the news.

 

According to Microsoft’s researchers, the security issue was revealed by Windows Defender ATP’s kernel sensors, which allowed the team to trace a security vulnerability back to Huawei’s device management driver. While digging deeper into the issue, the Microsoft researchers realized that the local privilege escalation vulnerability was enabled by Huawei’s flawed and insecure architecture design for one of its driver.

Microsoft claimed that computer manufacturers such as Huawei can build this type of utilities to facilitate device management. However, these tools contain components that have access to the lowest levels of a system, which means that if they don’t have a secure design by default, attackers could use them as backdoors to compromise users’ systems.

Now at this point I'm not even sure if this is newsworthy but I think it's kinda odd to hear about so many similar issues in such a short amount of time from the same brand. I think that they are either a terrible brand, or are just victims of an orchestrated media bashing within a political framework. I have seen a lot of ridiculous articles like "Huawei's CEO isn't trusting his own brand" just because they saw him using a device of a different brand.

I'm not defending Huawei here but I'm just wondering why all these news would be just a coincidence.

Given their recent series of severe breaches in security and ties to the government I won't be considering a Huawei phone until I have proof they are managing a real business. 

 

I currently have an iPhone 6s Plus, and while I *strongly* dislike the ecosystem and the way it forces you to spend ever more money, Apple's privacy and security is excellent in my experience. It's a shame not harvesting data is a selling point now

If you are going to use a Huawei device at this stage you would have to expect your data is likely going to be sent somewhere.

Given the track record this isn't shocking in the slightest.

It's not as bad as I thought though. Transferring files from PC to iPhone only through iTunes is dumb and so is absolute lack of bluetooth transfers to any other bluetooth device that's not an iPhone and settings and shit, but after I got fed up with Google's bullshit I just threw myself into Apple stuff and just said to myself "I'll adapt". And I have. I used to be very ant Apple, but when everyone in the industry force you to dump them because of their shit privacy policies, this is basically only thing you can do.

Apple is not exactly open source either. Could mine just as much data for NSA etc. The whole encryption lawsuit vs Apple looks like a well orchestrated honey trap for retarded criminals.

Well, if that's how you think, then you need to get rid of ALL technology anyway. But it's one thing where one company just openly hoards data and is even proud of it (Google or Fecesbook) and another where it's core selling point is privacy. Imagine what would happen to Apple if their "privacy" values turn out to be a scam.

You know Google is dishonest from the getgo and you avoid it. But for Apple, you just have to trust they are doing what they say they are doing. Until they don't.

 

The thing is, Apple sells expensive products. That's their primary income. What is primary income of Google or Fecesbook? Everything is free. And it's not free because of their goodness, it's free because their business model depends on the amount of people you hoard data from. Considering Apple achieved this anyway despite selling super expensive stuff, they really don't need to sell user data and is, like I've predicted, their main selling point these days. A thing very few companies can boast about really. If they'll fuck that up, the market will go hard on them if you break a trust like that. With Huawei, I was a bit reserved at first, but given they risen from government itself (it's China we're talking about here), it's very plausible. The situation with Huawei is a bit different than the mass panic about Kaspersky which I'll still defend. I'm not so sure about Huawei anymore. It's just too many things wrong with it...

By that logic no one ever has had a reason to lie about anything. Blind faith in advertisement speech leads to stuff like that blood testing company.

Only need to get rid of closed-source technology.  If it's all open source everyone can verify its trustworthiness. 

The only issue is that it's kinda hard to find open-source hardware.  But it's possible.

And how do you know what they do with the data once it's on their servers? Open source software doesn't tell you anything about that, you just have to trust them.

Because 90% of services work that way? Or they have it encrypted with key also stored on their side. Services don't use E2E especially where further processing is expected because it then wouldn't work (it's why ProtonMail has so many limitations because they use E2E). Apple keeps on emphasizing processing of data locally on the device. Something we know Google basically doesn't do and they hoard and process everything on their end. As for Apple being honest about their claims, can you imagine if someone found out their claims were false? It would be death to their business. Wanna know why I dumped Google? Yeah, they weren't doing what they were claiming and I've seen several times how they were abusing collected data to further their lunatic hardcore leftist bullshit even if it was within THEIR terms of service. I still hold a grudge against Apple for banning Gab, but other than that, their stance is pretty neutral in general.

It’s not like you can’t fact check. They aren’t doing magic to hide network activity. You can see them sending data to their servers. Apple on the other hand tells you what they are collecting and why and you can see they are telling the truth. Huawei makes pretty good hardware, like e.g. the Mediapad M2 8.0 eight-inch tablet I have is damn nice, but, in my personal experience, their software is terrible, their update-practices are terrible and they're just fucking assholes in general.
