NASA Selects New Mission to Explore Origins of Universe

After the news of the end of the Oppurtunity mission, and Curiosity's memory issues, some great news appeared on NASA's website about a new mission..

NASA has selected a new space mission that will help astronomers understand both how our universe evolved and how common are the ingredients for life in our galaxy’s planetary systems.

 

The Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) mission is a planned two-year mission funded at $242 million (not including launch costs) and targeted to launch in 2023.

Opportunity died because of a sandstorm. It did however lasted much longer than they expected in the first place so that's why I used quotes.

I wouldnt use the term failure at all. It kinda makes it sound like "They weren't a success" aka Challenger Shuttle

 

I would say something like that both the Opportunity and Spirit missions officially ended.

And Curiosity being alive and well, so using the plural of rover is also really wrong.

As a religious person, I can't help but laugh at stuff like this, but that's beside the point.

 

I'm curious as to what NASA hopes to discover by doing this. I mean it's not like the Milky Way has been standing still in space this whole time anyway.

From what I can tell, it is designed to image a wide range of infrared frequencies. Based on these frequencies the type of reaction and therefore the reactors can be determined. Once you know the reactors you have a rough idea of what kind of "stuff" exists in a region.

Not sure how these two are related TBH. Science tries to explain how the universe was created, whereas religion tries to explain who and why created the universe.

Thanks a lot for your explanation. Reading English is no problem for me, but finding the right words when I'm typing can be troublesome. I see that failure is way to blunt to call these missions. They have been a great succes and the units themselves lasted much longer than was expected (curiosity still going even). Sorry for my bad choice of words.

 

I was referring to Curiosity, not in the way that that mission ended, but because NASA had to switch to the backup side computer after some of the memory broke down. That side was the side it originally booted with when it started it's mission but they had to make a switch in the past already. The problem on the primary side was now isolated so they could switch back to it again.
