That's how I see this.  

I disagree, it's not always the case that "all publicity is good publicity". It depends on context and to be honest, this isn't really effective at "getting their name out there", even if they needed that. At best this is going to mildly interest enthusiasts like us, not the general public - they'll never even know it exists.

Eh, its infamous - we plebs are talking about their binned chip.  Like it could even matter or impact our lives.  So yes, we are being marketed at.  So how, is this not effective as F getting their name out?  We who cant even hope to attain (99% of this user base) even a shot at this CPU...yet here we are.  

 

I 100% agree this isn't aimed at the general public, but neither is half of Intels lineup   We enthusiasts however make up a significant portion, and best we talk about Intel than the new Ryzen discusses at CES (marketing)

 

Im not saying this IS the reason, but it IS one of a few of the angles of launching something like this - I would bet a lot on that.

We don't know enough yet. What clock were they running? A 16 core consumer part, if it will exist, will be ram bandwidth crippled and have lower clocks because they will have to power limit (although overclockers will push further as normal). If you need 16 Ryzen cores, threadripper makes more sense. I suspect they will keep 16 cores as an option, but would only deploy it if Intel tries to compete. 12 would seem more reasonable as a balance between clock and total power.

We know enough. By the time this hits, zen2 is out. This wont compete

If you've been following closely since Epyc Rome was announced you'd know that IPC gains across the board on Zen2 are insane compared to modern intel gains. CES was basically just confirmation that 3 chiplet strategy is real.
