Google ends controversial Chinese "Dragonfly" search project

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has confirmed that Google currently has "no plans to launch a search service in China" after months of controversy, including internal conflict, about their secret internal "Dragonfly" project. According to a report by The Intercept in August, Google was planning to build a search engine for use in China, that would censor results according to Chinese law, wiping results of topics such as "democracy, human rights, and peaceful protest". This was met with controversy from the start, as this would be aiding an authoritarian government in oppression of their citizens. Even Google's own employees have protested the project, calling for its complete cancellation.

 

The project relied upon data scraped from existing Chinese search engine 265.com without users' consent. This was kept so secret that Google's own privacy team did not know that it existed until the initial report by The Intercept. Once they were made aware, they forced the executives involved with the Dragonfly project to stop using 265.com data, which should have halted progress on the project. However, even in November, talks about Dragonfly were still happening, and Google's own privacy team was blocked from attending.

 

The most recent news comes from Sundar Pichai's responses to questions from US congressmen last week. The event as a whole was meant to make sure that Google was not enforcing a "pro-liberal" bias in their own search engine, but as an aside, project Dragonfly was discussed. In response to concerns about Dragonfly potentially going against human rights in the world, Pichai responded saying that there are currently no plans to launch the product:

Pichai repeatedly insisted that Dragonfly was an “internal effort” and that Google currently had “no plans to launch a search service in China.” Asked to confirm that the company would not launch “a tool for surveillance and censorship in China,” Pichai declined to answer, instead saying that he was committed to “providing users with information, and so we always — we think it’s ideal to explore possibilities. … We’ll be very thoughtful, and we will engage widely as we make progress.”

 

The Intercept confirms today that, according to inside sources, the project has been cancelled, at least for the short term, due to both internal and external backlash.

That's so nice of Google to cancel it... how long until Alphabet Inc. picks up the project instead? ?

Would be kind of pointless, considering that there are multiple search engines (bing, yahoo, baidu) is available.

 

Remember, google is just releasing a filtered engine, it wouldn't be different than the others.

Because almost every phone and web browser right now runs on android and chromium, better integration would allow chinese phones to provide more services on a system level rather than on other applications, I think.

I feel what is missing from this story, is the possibility that this search engine would be made for a government practicing what most google employees would actively lobby for in the US. Given the blatant political bias already enacted by plenty of things Google owns.

 

That being Communism.

I wonder how much of the work they have done on it is going to be integrated into future projects world wide?  That's what I'm really interested in.

Companies have done things that are morally questionable since forever in the name of profit. You would be niave to think they would suddenly stop. And on the second point I would have to disagree. The comment they made was not spouting b.s. it's a bit ironic that you say you are being objective when clearly stating something subjective in the same sentence.
