Sure for things like CSGO and DOTA but really it makes a lot of sense. For $29 a month you don’t have to wait for games to download, play at max settings 60fps+ in everything, always have up to date hardware, no electricity costs, and no bomb costs of a PC. A $1200 PC would take 40 months of cloud gaming to equal its cost. I’m not saying it’s for everyone as I love to tinker with my hardware and be able to modify it. But for someone with a limited budget or already has a crap top it makes sense

I would never stream a game vs playing it natively... Even if the streaming was free and I didn't have to pay for internet. The experience of streaming is NOT the same as playing on local hardware, and NEVER will be.

streaming with subscription is the future, no matter how much you dislike it or would prefer to keep your gaming PC, it's inevitable. The technology issues will be worked out have no doubt about it.

I just don't trust the industry not be asses about it, they will be greedy

 

Other industries like music or video did it by necessity, the gaming industry doesn't need it, they want it to make more money. Either some company like Netflix picks it up and makes the all thing ethical or if it stays in the hands of the EA's or Ubisoft's we are royally f*****

I see all these people talking about streaming games. But HOW? Many in the US cant get above 3 Mbps DSL. Also bandwidth caps. Even big providers like Comcast have caps. So all streaming does is fuck those who dont have a good ISP. The fact is this shit has been tried before and failed. It will continue to fail due to ISP being be monstrous corporations who are driven by greed. With Neutrality dead, I dont think any service will be good for gamer's. They can pry my PC and Switch out of my cold dead hands. If gaming does go to streaming, then I guess Ill give it up, as I dont see how any service will work or will be cost effective. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

This harebrained streaming games "as a service" idea is going to fail in the long-term. People don't want it, it worsens performance, it will shift game development focuses towards shovelware philosophy, it will kill posterity of access for games, and it presents awful value for customers.

 

The idea is like some auto-manufacturer in the 1950s seeing how many new ambitious products based around new understandings are being made, and looking at futuristic concepts of the year 2000, and so they assert with naive confidence that everybody will be driving submersible flying cars by the year 2000 - except that submersible flying cars might be pretty cool (aside from the noise pollution and that there's no point to driving underwater), whereas games via streaming is practically only major downsides.

 

It's the conceptualization that comes from corporate execs that, being psychopathic, are extremely low on consideration and so don't have a good grasp on reality and what is practical or positive for the people they expect to shoulder the burden. Probably, to a lot of regular people immediately see the idea as non-practical and also not desirable.

 

 

Yves Guillemot and Phil Spencer - two execs that are not exactly known for being good at their jobs or for being positive influences upon the gaming industry. They're both known for fluff talk, for not keeping their promises, and for making many bad gaming and anti-consumer decisions.

 

So, the idea of game streaming being "the future" makes sense coming from them - it just isn't particularly pertinent to reality.

It offers a terrible value.....to some. I, for example, would make out like a bandit with streaming using Geforce Now. I could play light games on integrated graphics and heavier games on Now and end up saving a ton of money.

 

And it will always have higher latency than if you were running it locally, but the extent that it matters will vary by user and by server and as time goes on and networks improve, that latency will dip below levels of relevancy. Again, yes, someone local will always have an advantage on paper, but at the end of the day, it's not likely enough of a difference to affect a significant chunk of people. Just like how plenty of people happily game with old wireless mice with significantly higher input lag.

Yep those were dark days. So annoying: discs used to get lost or scratched and were difficult to store. And you would only find the popular games on store shelves... Thank god for digital distribution.

I don't have GeForce Now but how fast is your internet especially the latency? I'm guessing speeds 20 mbps down/up and latency below 20 milliseconds should at least give a smooth playing experience.

You are talking out of your ass ? anything above 100ms network ping is unplayable in competitive games there is nothing to adapt to its just reality. And thats ~100ms of network latency that has been smoothed. If we are talking about input latency or display latency, oh boi 100ms is totally unplable, test it out, use msi afterburner rivatuner ss and limit your FPS to 10 fps, thats what 100ms is, unless the game has framerate independent input, which is a different topic, im talking about input lag of streaming which has nothing to do with input.

My internet is 300mbps down/150mbps up real speed, fiber optics in my home, you basically cant get any better in signal quality, i can get more bandwidth but that wont help in this case, 300mbps is enough to uphold 2-3 4K 60fps streams at the same time. And my upload speed doesnt matter since i only receive the stream down, i dont upload to the server other than a few bytes of input taps.

The latency is decided by the quality of the network, congestion and most important of all the Nvidia streaming servers, the distance from my geolocation, the congestion of their servers(which is currently very high), and the speed/quality of their upload and ISP.

All i can say for now is that they use very good quality CPU's, and the gpu's they use are Tespla P40 made for virtual machine+ multiusers, and from the looks of the interface its using windows 8 or windows server(most likely) 2012 inside virtual machines, with users sharing same machine.

Using windows VM is the worst concept ever, they will never get rid of the latency unless they have a dedicated machine for every user running in direct mode without virtual machine, thats their first biggest mistake.

5G has nothing to do with this, 5G is for mobile only, currently on a high-speed fiber optics connection the delay is simply unplayable on GeforceNow and the quality really really bad, low rate 1080p 8b-it 60fps with a lot of gradient banding, the quality loss is simply not worth it even if you run at ultra 1080p 60fps, the image is blurry and low quality.

5G will help with mobile yes, you might be able to play AAA PC games on your phone/laptop tablet in the park at any time using 5G and not even using a fraction of your battery power compared to running the game directly. But if its not smooth and good quality on a High end PC/network i cant see how it will be on a mobile device even with 5G, 5G is worse than direct fiber connection at home.

5G is not going to replace Wifi, they are completely different things. As to wired i seriously doubt it, only in a perfect world you would have a perfect signal everywhere.

Haha, subscription, just no.

Also streaming games? Yeah urm about that, latency issues, quality, internet speed bandwidth requirement which most people will still not have for years. Also the price for the service will be expensive no doubt that. Personally I'll stick to PC though. It will also be cheaper over time as well.

Actually in the States 5G is considerably faster than most people's broadband plus it fits the whole no unlimited data thing they have over there, I genuinely wouldn't be at all surprised if they started to push 5G as a home broadband solution tbh.

true that we are in different countries.  If you have a lousy wired service maybe, it's way less expensive for the networks to invest in it than fiber in the ground.

But if you already have a good infrastructure like in my country i don't see it happen, and it historically is way more expensive to buy traffic in xG than in traditional fiber connections. A lot of things had to change and i don't mean the capacity of the network, i don't see the cell phone companies making data traffic so cheap, they would loose they're cash cow.

 

Maybe to solve the problem of the rural areas, if the country is not mountainous i guess, because some parts of my country still can't have a decent coverage by 3G let alone 5G. :D 

 

btw i think 5G is also considered broadband.

It might not replace all wired connections, but it will probably be the case for most people, as it's cheaper, faster and easier than deploying FTTH. Signal coverage is an issue currently being ironed out, with some companies proposing to build 5G transmitters into light bulbs for indoor applications, lamp posts, etc.

you lost me, i could exchange my fiber optical connection for 5G, but i don't see the role of wifi here, even in 5G i would have to use wifi to connect to the network, or are we going to have some sort of 5G cards for PC's and laptops?

I've heard from a bunch of people that it is playable if the server is nearby, so I believe we will see something like the Netflix streaming servers inside of ISP networks in the future. 

I wish that were true but sadly its not.

Think about it no one uses 5G/4G mobile tech in business or home usage or public wifi, even if what you say is true (you've probably read it from news articles) how many devices you know that natively connect to 5G wireless tech? your laptop? nope, your desktop? nope, your phone? not even your phone, phones connect to 3/4/5G using a SIM, how will you connect to a local 5G network using your 5G phone(SIM only)? you cant.

By 2020 you wont even see many 5G providers or much adoption, let alone new devices having support for SIM-less 5G, let alone you buying that new hardware supporting it. Even if everything went smoothly with cheap devices (X - doubt) and fast adoptions, i dont see 5G being a thing outside SIM phones by 2025.
