Just wait until Microsoft/Google start bundling OSes/Browsers with miners (Please just no, don't do that to us)

I hope not and I don’t think the likes of Google or Microsoft are broke enough to even consider bundling cryptocurrency miners to Chrome or Edge. Those companies have cash trickling up to the top from the services they sell and the ads they show by reading people’s inboxes.

Sadly with how ubiquitous their products are, I wouldn't be surprised if they could get away with using a single digit percent of CPU time and still not suffer a significant backlash/drop in users. (Just imagine the number of miners they would have, I doubt they haven't tried to calculate that with profits vs user count :P)

Would using extensions like Noscript on Firefox or ScripSafe on chrome, block these sort of things? I'm trying to find an "infected" site to try it out but can't find any.

 

 

But well, in my case, I added the EasyPrivacy list to ublock origin, which does block the address for coinbase.

If you want to manually block it in your adblocker.(I'm sure there are others, can't be arsed to post all of them, they are in the EasyPrivacy list)

I'm also pretty sure my router is blocking them now as well, since I also use it to block ads and other crap like this (like windows' "spying") using a couple of hosts files loaded through DD-WRT's firewall...

Was working on a system the other time where it would shutdown for no reason. Found out, it had an malware detected by Windows Defender called Trojan/Bitcoinminer. The odd part was cpu never showed any suspicous activity, but when running a cpu stress test, it would go from 40c to 90C plus within a few seconds, causing the program to abort and give out a cpu overheating warning. After removing that malware, doing the same cpu stress test, it would just hover around 70C.

I’m thinking illegal file sharing websites like Pirate Bay are notorious for embedding cryptocurrency miners and somehow gets installed and running without user intervention maybe by drive by download or just using the temporary internet folder in Windows.

Possible that Windows Defender included signatures for miners and classified then as malware

My brother mines Monero. He claims it's good for mining on CPUs with lots of cores like his R7 1700

Reminds me of R32 javascript ransomware. It's still out there and is super easy to inject into javascript on websites in ads

Except that they'll never stop mining the piss out of your CPU/electricity.  Give an inch and several hundreds of people/organizations will take a mile right off the cuff.  Will quickly find out that the pound of flesh they seek is one we cannot part with.

I can see cease and desist orders and court hearings coming in if regular websites embedded miners. Just imagine the notifications from anti-virus programs popping constantly as they block miners from something innocuous as mail.google.com.

Wouldn't most users be suspicious though when they suddenly hear their fans ramp up due to the CPU load? At least some of the more technologically aware users that know a thing or two.

 

I assume that like NoScript (Firefox) / ScriptSafe (Chrome) would hopefully block this though. I'm pretty sure it blocked the script on PB, but that was a in-page thing so I guess different scenario.

 

Shouldn't this also be blocked though if you disallow pop-up windows? It can bypass adblock, sure, but can it also bypass browser settings (blocked pop-ups)?

 

I also wonder if MalwareBytes is going to release something though, like a update to MalwareBytes that protects against this. If that's at all possible on their end.

Not necessarily.  AIO coolers and custom loops tend to slow down the heat cycle, making the fans come on more gradually (if at all). 

Those with a big air cooler should indeed hear that something's going on within seconds of it starting.

Malware Bytes and other anti virus programs already protects against crypto miners but it should be the one with real time protection enabled.

I found one of these nasties on my PC the other day, no idea where I got it. They do a  very good job of not using enough CPU for you to notice a laggy experience. CSGO was the only game where I noticed it and I thought that was just CS being CS. Freaked out when I actually checked usage and I was sitting at 60% usage with nothing open
