AMD Clarifies Why Threadripper Uses 4 Silicon Dies

Source 1: posted by DiaSin https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/816158-amd-clarifies-why-threadripper-uses-4-silicon-dies/

Source 2:  https://www.overclock3d.net/news/cpu_mainboard/amd_clarifies_why_threadripper_uses_4_silicon_dies/1

  • Many rumours have been circulating regarding Threadripper's core configuration and the purpose its four apparent CPU dies.

  • Many thought that Threadripper simply used 4 CPU cores from each die, a point that has been long disproven by AMD, while others thought that these were "failed" Ryzen CPU dies that simply remained inactive

  • Turns out, Threadripper only has two active CPU dies, which are in a diagonal configuration to allow heat to more evenly dissipate on the CPU's IHS.

  • So what’s the purpose of the other two dies? It’s structural:

    • These extra dies prevent imbalance and allow for simple cooler mounting without any chance of damaging the CPU.

    • they’re not active- they don’t even contain working transistors!

  • AMD did not want to create a new socket for Threadripper

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/08/ibm-and-sony-cram-up-to-330tb-into-tiny-tape-cartridge/

  • IBM and Sony have developed a new magnetic tape system capable of storing 201 gigabits of data per square inch, for a max theoretical capacity of 330 terabytes in a single palm-sized cartridge.

  • the world's largest hard drives—which are about twice the physical size of a Sony tape cartridge—are the 60TB Seagate SSD or 12TB HGST helium-filled HDD. The largest commercially available tapes only store 15TB.

  • Sony developed a new type of tape that has a higher density of magnetic recording sites, and IBM Research worked on new heads and signal processing tech to actually read and extract data from those nanometre-long patches of magnetism

  • When they're eventually commercialised, the new cartridges, will be significantly more expensive because of the tape's complex manufacturing process. Likewise, a new tape drive will be required

  • The vehicle uses the Tesla app on your phone to communicate your identity, unlock the vehicle, and know when it’s ready to start and turn off.

    • It uses Low Energy Bluetooth to talk to your device so that it knows you’re there

  • In case you’re ever in need of a valet, spare set, or your phone is dead, the car also ships with a pair of NFC-enabled plastic cards roughly the size and shape of credit cards that can unlock and start the vehicle- but these need to be tapped

Cable giants step up piracy battle by interrogating Montreal software developer and searching his home

Source 1: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/tvaddons-piracy-rogers-bell-videotron-court-1.4231340

  • Bell, Rogers and Quebecor's Videotron have searched a Montreal software developer's home and interrogated him for more than nine hours as part of a copyright infringement lawsuit.

  • The companies are targeting software developer Adam Lackman, the creator of TVAddons  — a library of hundreds of apps known as add-ons. Once downloaded on an Android box or a computer with added software, some of the add-ons — such as Exodus and 1Channel — allow people easy access to pirated movies, TV shows and even live television.

  • On June 9, the telecoms got an Anton Piller order, a civil search warrant that gives a plaintiff access to a defendant's home, without notice, to search for and seize relevant evidence before it can be destroyed.

  • A Federal Court judge would later declare the Anton Piller order in this case "unlawful," but that was weeks after a group of men arrived at Lackman's door at 8 a.m. on June 12.

  • the group included a bailiff, two computer technicians, an independent counsel and a lawyer representing Bell, Rogers and Videotron.

  • According to court documents, the group stayed for 16 hours and the plaintiffs' lawyer and independent counsel interrogated Lackman for more than nine hours.

    • He was given a break for dinner and to speak to his lawyer, who was present.

    • Lackman was "not permitted to refuse to answer questions" and his lawyer wasn't permitted to counsel him in his answers.

    • "Any time I would question the process, they would threaten me with contempt of court proceedings," says Lackman.

  • Besides seizing personal items such as his computer and phone, Lackman says the plaintiffs' lawyer and independent counsel forced him to hand over passwords for his email and social media accounts.

Ex-Google VP: Android is the reason your phone takes worse pics than iPhone

Source 1: posted by hey_yo_  https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/815723-ex-google-vp-android-is-the-reason-your-phone-takes-worse-pics-than-iphone/

Source 2:  https://thenextweb.com/google/2017/07/31/google-exec-android-iphone-photos/#.tnw_r0FMj2O5

  • An Ex-Googler has taken to Facebook to dickride Apple and deride Android, saying the Android operating system is responsible for Android phones being years behind Apple in photo quality.

  • Here’s his argument:

  • It’s because when Samsung innovates with the underlying hardware (like a better camera) they have to convince Google to allow that innovation to be surfaced to other applications via the appropriate API. That can take YEARS.

  • Also the greatest innovation isn’t even happening at the hardware level – it’s happening at the computational photography level. (Google was crushing this 5 years ago – they had had “auto awesome” that used AI techniques to automatically remove wrinkles, whiten teeth, add vignetting, etc… but recently Google has fallen back).

  • Apple doesn’t have all these constraints. They innovate in the underlying hardware, and just simply update the software with their latest innovations (like portrait mode) and ship it.

Britain bans combustion cars

Source 1: posted by GamingMemeKing https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/812656-petrol-diesel-cars-to-be-banned-by-2040/

Source 2:  https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/jul/25/britain-to-ban-sale-of-all-diesel-and-petrol-cars-and-vans-from-2040

  • Britain is to ban all new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040 amid fears that rising levels of nitrogen oxide pose a major risk to public health.

  • The commitment, which follows a similar pledge in France, is part of the government’s much-anticipated clean air plan

  • The government warned that the movewas needed because of the impact that poor air quality was having on people’s health.

  • Ministers believe it poses the largest environmental risk to public health in the UK, costing up to £2.7bn in lost productivity in one recent year.

  • hybrid vehicles are also affected by the ban.

UCF kicker ruled ineligible, loses scholarship after monetizing YouTube videos

Source 1: https://www.sporttechie.com/ucf-kicker-ruled-ineligible-due-to-youtube-channel/?utm_content=bufferdc02a&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2017/08/ncaa-deems-ucf-kicker-ineligible-after-he-refused-to-demonetize-youtube-videos/

  • Donald De La Haye is a kicker for the Central Florida (UCF) football team on a full scholarship

  • He ran a personal YouTube channel with around 100K subscribers featuring videos about football, life, fitness, etc. and Monetized his content

  • The NCAA viewed the monetization of football-related videos as a rules violation, since college athletes can’t receive extra benefits due to their status as athletes

  • They offered him the option to de-monetize his football-related videos, but he refused, so he lost his scholarship to Central Florida and can’t even play as a walk-on, since he was deemed ineligible

  • The NCAA justifies the rule on impermissible extra benefits as a way to preserve amateurism, but the rule has been the source of tons of controversy in recent years, with many saying it goes too far and others saying college athletes should be paid in addition to their scholarships, room and board, etc. due to how much money sports like football and basketball generate for the schools

  • De La Haye says he refuses to demonetize the videos because he worked hard on them

Bitcoin gets a hard fork after all!

Source 1:  https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/02/wtf-is-bitcoin-cash-and-is-it-worth-anything/

Source 2:

  • Early Tuesday morning a new cryptocurrency called Bitcoin Cash was created

  • The new currency arrived via a "hard fork" in which a faction of people who run the software that controls bitcoin started a breakaway version.

  • Instead of creating a totally new cryptocurrency (and blockchain) starting at block 0, a fork just creates a duplicate version that shares the same history.

    • all past transactions on bitcoin cash’s new blockchain are identical to bitcoin core’s blockchain,

    • future transactions and balances will be totally independent

  • Upon the creation of the new chain, every owner of bitcoin was awarded Bitcoin Cash on a one-for-one ratio

  • BUT the world's biggest bitcoin exchange, Coinbase, chose not to support Bitcoin Cash.

    • this means the millions of people who maintain a wallet on Coinbase did not receive the new "Cash" and, as of now, there is no way for them to do so.

  • Coinbase is now being sued!

  • Bitcoin Cash is currently trading at $400 USD

Source 1: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/08/e-mail-prankster-phishes-white-house-officials-hilarity-ensues/

  • Over the past few weeks, a self-described "e-mail prankster" has posed as members of President Donald Trump's administration in a series of e-mails to White House officials, publishing responses to Twitter for comedic effect

    • check them out on the page of @sinon_reborn

  • Among the targets were Trump's top homeland security advisor Tom Bossert, who volunteered his personal e-mail address because he believed he was interacting with Jared Kushner

  • Now-deposed White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci was also phished

  • Apparently Trump’s staff is susceptible to the exact type of attack that hacked he DNC

I'm not 100% certain, since I don't have Floatplane, but I believe the Mezzanine Updates are regarding LTT/LMG remodeling. Not sure if they'll be released on YouTube or not. Maybe as one video after the remodeling is finished? Don't know!

The Mezzanine updates are a bunch of quick one or two minute shaky cam footage of the renovations currently happening at the LMG HQ. It's just linus walking around the construction site talking about what's being built and that sort of thing.

LMG doesn't want to release the vids on Youtube because of their low quality and low production value (With Youtube's algorithms, these low-ish quality videos could really hurt their view numbers).

Linus has mentioned that a proper, high production value video detailing the new construction will be released on Youtube once it's completed. I believe it'll be in the format of an updated office tour.
