[Updated, confirmed] Intel Coffee Lake CPUs will NOT be compatible with Z270 chipset motherboards

Source: https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2017/08/02/intels-coffee-lake-cpus-not-compatible-with-z270-motherboards-says-asrock/#34766d7b76a2

So according to ASRock, Coffee Lake CPUs won't be backwards compatible with Z270/Z170 motherboards despite using the same LGA 1151 socket which is what many people have hoped for (Including me, running a Z170 Extreme4 mobo).

Quote

PC enthusiasts are waiting for several exciting products to hit retailer shelves in the coming months, but one of the  most anticipated - Intel's Coffee Lake six-core CPUs, which are the company's successors to its current Skylake CPUs, will not be compatible with current motherboards.

Quote

Despite rumors of a possible trio of six-core CPUs using the same LGA1151 socket as current Skylake CPUs such as the Core i5-7600K, the likes of the supposed Core i7-8700K will not work in current Z270 chipset motherboards.

This is according to motherboard manufacturer ASRock, which replied to a Tweet on Twitter regarding Coffee Lake compatibility with one of the company's most recent motherboards.

Coffee-lake.jpg?width=960

This was posted by forbes and they provided the above screenshot as proof, which makes it pretty much confirmed news.

It pains me to see this as I hoped for the possibility of using those 6-cores in older boards including my own Z170 one. There is no word on Z170 to be precise but one can logically assume they're not going to be supported as well.

It's probably either due to some architectural changes in Coffee Lake over Skylake & Kaby Lake or it's just Intel being assholes again and creating artificial limitations so people buy more CPUs ^_^

Thoughts?

UPDATE:

TechPowerUp just posted pictures of Intel's Coffee Lake i7 and i5 CPUs and they look like this:

Note what is written on the side of the boxes: "Requires Intel 300 Series chipset-based motherboards". I think that confirms it for people who didn't take ASRock's tweet as solid proof.

I can't find any other sources or additional information as it's fresh news so I can't help you answer that question :( I suppose it should be possible but I wouldn't bet on it.

Depends on if they remapped the pin out, as was previously suggested in other threads on the subject.  If so, I can't see it supporting prior generations, as they wouldn't match the new pin mapping.

300 Series not until Q2'2018, so I don't think we even have a clue yet.

@Morgan MLGman How about fixing the threads title for all previous LGA 1151 boards? you know for people with the h110m, b1/250, h1/270 chipsets don't feel excluded from the fun [:

Any ways this was expected already every one knew to fit the changes the pin layout would have to change even if it kept using 1151 pins.

This could still be the ideal solution to whoever's wanting a 6c/12t Intel high end processor without paying the stupidly overpriced tag of the i7 7800x, or who wanted the best possible gaming processor there is without going with the also idiotically priced i7 7740k

But to every one else Ryzen is still miles a better deal and getting a motherboard that will last literally just 1 gen is the signal that there is no more such thing as buying high end motherboards in order to have upgrade path or future proof, at least on Intel's side.

Well, in a way I should feel excluded myself as Z170 wasn't mentioned too :P I wanted to make the title clear to understand and read, and I suppose you can call the rest of the chipsets "inferior" to Z270 so if that one doesn't get support for Coffee Lake, the rest don't as well :P

One of the credible rumors I saw about this said it was due to actual technical need, so it's not unexpected.  Though we've seen leaks both ways.

Back then when Ryzen launched people were asking if to go Intel or AMD, and every Intel fanboy and their mother claimed the existing LGA1151 chipsets would work with Coffee Lake in an attempt to fend against the Ryzen proposition. Feel bad for the people who got suckered into getting a dead end mobo.

That's because Intel themselves said it's going to work. Now they changed their mind.

Are we honestly surprised? Really?

+1 reason to get Ryzen. Platform longevity is pretty much confirmed for AM4 to be at least up to 2020. No need to fork over $100s to get a new motherboard for your new CPU. Just get the CPU and BIOS update, update BIOS, drop in CPU and boom, done.

Ye ole' train

The only lesson we can take from this is that Kaby Lake should've never existed in the first place, at least not in the quad-core configuration of always.

Spot on, Intel had to rearrange the pins to support the additional cores and DDR4-2666. It's not "Intel being assholes and creating artificial limitations" :D

AMD fanboy logic:

"Thats why I am going to ryzen, screw intel!!!"

*goes out to buy ryzen and needs to buy a new board also*

So you're making this point on the very thread that makes this as much of a problem for people remaining with intel?

Good for you: managing to hide a glaring flaw of intel behind a pseudo-witty retort that makes absolutely no sense in the context on which is posted.

Are anyone in here even the slightest surprised? I doubt it. But hey, at least it will support Optane, which no one uses. WOOO!

Watching Intel have competition is like watching a headless chicken trying to get out of a mine field

Context? Coffelake requires a new mobo and people are bitching about it....how is my comment out of context? Im just pointing out that no matter what side you choose you are most likely going to buy a new board regardless especially to take advantage of new features each gen.

Im just sick of the "fuck intel" post non-stop since ryzen. Its a new chip so you might need a new board. This is not new but some how matter.

AMD promised AM4 to be supported for future products for 4 years. They've had far longer living compatible sockets in the past so no reason to doubt.

So you either honestly didn't know that or you did know that making your comments make no sense.
