I would never use an Android again for a reason as false as the one stated above...

 

If he mentioned software updates, slowdowns/freezing, inferior application update or launch times, etc., it would make all the sense in the world (until the Google Pixel arrives and debunks most of these), but hes trying to say that Apple has a superior image processing software .-.?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but both my Sony Xperia X compact and m Samsung Galaxy S8 take terrible night time photos. And the sony it is hard to get good shots with

With plenty of light, a good amount of tweaking, and a little post touch up, many smartphone cameras can be perfectly serviceable. Low light is the enemy of these small sensor cameras. With a slow enough shutter speed, low light can be done without a lot of noise (as noise seems to occur at higher ISO levels), but if you're carrying around a tripod to make such a shot, odds are good you have a DSLR to use as well.

 

In general, iPhones seem to require less tweaking to get a good result out of their camera. On my phone, depending on the shot, I find myself switching between two camera apps to obtain a good result.

This is a bit disingenuous and I know where it's going: 

 

1) This is not a coding issue

2) This is not an issue inherit to the open source model

3) Google isn't really using an open source model: Phone software is free (as in free beer) some parts you can have the code, others you do not. This details are important in relation to item 2)

 

What is happening here though is clearly a bureocratic/logistical problem. Trying to paint it as an Android software or worst, an open source issue is crap from a salty ex-employee.

I didn't realize a OS has anything to do with the imaging hardware. Perhaps the OS on the computer he uses to view the pictures is the culprit ?

Sure most flagships look decent in the bright sunlight, but so did black and white film cameras from the early 1900s. Take any smartphone into low lighting and they all look horrible. You simple can't fit the lens needed for all of the dynamic range from super bright to super dark so I am still not blown away. I will say though the optical stabilization in video on the 6S+ and up is incredibly. It also leads to some really weird artifacts if it's too windy

Yes. If there's one thing the iPhone excels is automatic settings for the camera. I think the image signal processing inside the their proprietary A* series chips are good and I would say OIS implementation in the iPhone 7+ as I've seen from my friend is better than most phones especially in recording video. It has less of that "jello effect" unlike in most Android phones.

I think crappy Android cameras ended with the LG G4 and Galaxy S6/S6 Edge in 2015. I think the notion of Android phones taking crappy photos started with Motorola.

I think that the most important things to get the phones to replace DLSRs are a flexible aperture and adjustable focal length. I don't think that these features will come in phones in a long time because the phone cameras need to be so compact. As mentioned before the sensor size also matters.

Edit: I was wrong, Samsung recently released the S9 with variable aperture though only two modes f1.5 and f2.4.

A quick macro shot I put together and touched up a bit from my LeEco LePro 3. These cameras seem to love well lit close-ups where the pixel count is actually useful. Open Camera was the app used.

Low light shot from my Nikon D5100 before it got bricked.

If I tried to shoot it with smartphone cameras, it would be very grainy and introduce a lot of noise just to having more light in. Also, I find that many smartphone cameras struggle to focus in low light.

I own a Canon DSLR and if I'm taking scenic, my DSLR will come with me.

 

If I'm taking casual pictures, like when I have my son, my Pixel XL camera is perfectly fine.

 

It really just comes down to the style of pictures I want to take. Also, no phone camera will replace a SLR or DSLR for serious photography. However, for point and shoot cameras, a phone camera is more then adequate.

I do think Gundotra is making a claim about Android that doesn't entirely hold up, but at the same time: it's silly to insist that serious photographers 'must' always use a DSLR or mirrorless.

 

I have a good mirrorless cam, and it's even fairly portable.  But I don't want to carry it every time I think I might want to take photos.  As such, the camera quality on my phone matters a whole hell of a lot.  And yes, sometimes the photos you take will rival what you'd get from a dedicated camera.  For that matter, there have been shots I took with my phone that I would never have obtained with a DSLR, like shooting through a park fence (my phone fit through the fence, the mirrorless didn't).

 

I'm reminded of what I brought up in a similar argument a few years ago: would you insist that someone can't take driving seriously unless they buy a high-end car?  That you're only interested in basic commuting if you don't have a Porsche in the driveway?  No, of course not.  Likewise, it's possible to care deeply about photography (and produce good photos) without a DSLR or mirrorless camera on hand.  A good photographer is good whatever tool they're using.
