Verizon accused of throttling Netflix and YouTube, admits to “video optimization”

"Yesterday, we reported that Verizon Wireless appeared to be throttling Netflix traffic, — and today, the company seems to have come clean. In a statement provided to Ars Technica and The Verge, Verizon implicitly admitted to capping the traffic, blaming the issue on a temporary video optimization test."

 

"What customers saw wasn’t optimization, but a clear cap, with tests from Netflix’s speed-test tool showing measurably lower rates than non-Netflix tests."

 

Sure sounds like throttling, and net neutrality is still a thing right now.

 

"There are some exceptions to that for network management, but throttling a specific service is a textbook violation of those rules. Netflix traffic was clearly, tangibly being treated differently from other traffic, and customers hadn’t opted into any special service like Go90 that might justify it."

 

Other video streaming services seem to have been affected too, but did not have speed test features available.

 

 

So basically, not cool. Throttling video data to "an acceptable limit of 1080p" is not good. This is just another blow against a fair, open internet.

I read this and have to agree with RikvE ,This is a big deal why? Didn't AT&T do this too along with the others at some point in time?

Interesting.. I was not aware Netflix had a test tool.. I just ran the test (and speedtest) a few times and it looks like Cox is consistently throttling Netflix at 50% of my total bandwidth.

"Our testing appears to back this up in the case of Netflix, though there might be some instances in which users get lower-quality Netflix video, such as when they tether their phone to other devices. On a Verizon Wireless iPhone, we got a 10Mbps download speed on fast.com, which is Netflix's speed test tool.

when contacted Netflix

 Netflix did not provide any statement specifically on Verizon throttling. “We don’t cap data and don't cap for any mobile network. We offer settings inside the Netflix app to empower our members to control their own quality preferences and data usage," Netflix told  Ars.

 

YouTube problems reported

"The Verizon video limits were reported by The Verge last night, following Reddit threads on the topic. There's also a Howard Forums thread in which users who checked the YouTube app's "stats for nerds" section say that high-quality videos are being hurt.

"YouTube is being throttled to 10Mbps as well," one person wrote yesterday. "In the 'stats for nerds' it would load at roughly 1,250KBps which translates to 10Mbps. Put the VPN on and that number tripled easily. Didn't have an issue playing 1080p 60fps though."

"Confirmed here too," another person wrote in response. "1440p videos are throttled at a constant 9.59Mbps. It wasn't even able to keep up and buffered at a few points."

 

Verizon once said it doesn't ”manipulate“ video

"Verizon appears to have changed course from an earlier statement that it passes along video in the same quality provided by the video service. "We deliver whatever the content provider gives us. We don’t manipulate the data," Verizon said when it introduced its new unlimited plan in February."

 

what happened when they got caught? 

"We're always looking for ways to optimize our network without impacting our customers' experience," the company replied. Verizon provided no further details" 

 

TLDR- Verizon got caught throttling Netflix videos, they got caught they lied about it by saying.

Could it be possible that these customers have Verizon's Unlimited Data plan? If you read the fine print it says that if you use more than 22gb a month than the speed will be slowed down when doing stuff like streaming videos.

Why are they doing this its still illegal right now we just need to wait till mid 2018 to see what Net Neutrality is like then

Could it be possible that these customers have Verizon's Unlimited Data plan? If you read the fine print it says that if you use more than 22gb a month than the speed will be slowed down when doing stuff like streaming videos.

VZW skirts around this by calling it prioritization over throttling. With the huge customer base, mobile net isn't supposed to be a replacement for home internet. If everyone had 4G unlimited at all times, everybody's service will be effected and not just the data hogs. If you wanna stream lots of data, your best option will always be your home connection--unless you live in the middle of nowhere.

 

From a business standpoint, I see their position. Why punish the low data users who use it every now and then because someone else somehow uses hundreds of GB of data on their cell phone? It could be worse, at least it's 10mbps reliably and not some janky bottom tier service like Sprint or Tmobile.

And even then, it's not even fine print. If you can read text you can probably read that it's limited at a certain point.

I think this was just fine. Sometimes companies do that because it's putting alot more load on their networks and some people that live like in no man's land will get even less coverage just because a few million people are watch videos at above 1080p. Because those companies want to give the user the same consist speed of what they are paying for. Now I don't steam videos but if loading a 4k video on my phone took a little longer and my rest of my phone was fast like chrome then so be it.

This debate about netflix throttling was the literal catalyst for our current net nutrality laws... Throttling a service is a major portion of net nutrality concerns. So what are you on?

For the business i admistrate we have a 100gb business data plan with some other fancy bells n whistles. We also have the 22gb unlimited plan for another funtion. Ill test both out tomorrow.

As soon as your 4K video interrupts every 5 seconds because it needs to buffer, you'll change your mind about those words. That's what's happening now. 

When streaming videos, you only download a small part at a time while you are watching, it's not like you download the entire movie first and then watch it later.

 

Load on the network has been proven to be a false claim.  They used that excuse in the past to throttle Netflix to the point where you couldn't even watch low-res content anymore.  All those problems suddenly vanished when Netflix paid the ISPs "for access to their networks".  Except Verizon, because they deliberately keep their connections limited even after Netflix paid up.

I guess they could argue that you have unlimited data, but capped speed when a certain limit is reached. So, it is not false advertisement per se.

Unlimited Data and Capped when a limit is reached are mutually exclusive terms. You can't claim it's unlimited if it has a cap in place.

 

Here in the UK our biggest ISP (BT) have peak time throttling for everyone including unlimited data customers but there's no limit on how much you can DL before you get throttled, it's just between 4pm and 10pm for EVERYONE. My ISP (Sky) have zero restrictions or throttling for unlimited customers, heck this month alone I'm prolly WAY over 200gb and I still get my advertised 50/10.

 

Imagine an all you can eat restaurant saying 'limit 2 plates per customer', how long before they got sued for false advertising?

americans are so unpatriotic.  What conglomerates are doing to americans is simply a betrayal, other countries dont do the same thing or if they do its to for political reasons (like in china and middle east).

In europe ISPs dont filter or throttle, you find 3rd world European countries with cheap and fast internet and decent coverage that let you do what you want. Trying to gauge your customers out of all the money they have leaves them penniless and in the end will have to leave you as they cant afford an internet if everything they want to do they are forced to pay for separately.

 

Im also referring to the net neutrality as well, Regardless of what the people vote or want it still goes to what the current FCC/republican party wants.
