Additionally, regarding Intel, I get what a lot of people say when it comes to "Try to develop the best product you can for the best price you can". The problem is, why? Why should they? I'm not condoning it, but these are businesses, not Nonprofits. Unless we're talking about a market with strong consumer protection, the only thing that I think would keep any big company like that in check is competition. Everyone gets complacent when dominating the market though, which is fortunate, as complacency makes mistakes, and mistakes piss people off.

NVidia is bringing improvements despite the absence of AMD all-around. But I suppose that's what makes NVidia so great... they don't rest and continue to push forward.

Because when you stop to think about it, AMD in reality caught up to technology that Intel had for a decade. And the only reason AMD threatens Intel's place now is because Intel themselves have been stagnating, just slowly giving us small improvements.

 

Of course limitations exist and sometimes you can't just make something that's x amount faster than the previous thing you did, but... come on. 

I think both. For instance, people complain about NVidia's prices, yet that's twofold. For one, AMD is nowhere to be found. For two, why does NVidia charge higher prices? Because they can. Jen Hsun Huang once said, the market doesn't set the price, the competition does. He's right. With no AMD, NVidia is free to charge what they want (within reason).

 

It's vital that all companies push forward.

NV is guilty of engaging in a lot of the same practices on account of complacency. Maybe not so much the tiny incremental updates, but price gouging for sure, some arbitrary tiers in product stacks and the like. Like, say, the still ridiculous proposition that is the Titan X. Maybe not so much now that they market it as a deep learning card. But 1200 bucks for a consumer GPU that has recently been deemed useless twice by something else they stuck into the stack arbitrarily? Yeah, that's capitalizing on your market share right there. Not to mention silly things like narrower memory bus, cost cutting and the likes. I'm not overly qualified to make statements regarding NV's architectural sandbagging, but I believe it's there. The saving grace, and the reason for the big improvements regardless of weak competition is the fact that, what the cards are used for, namely gaming, is advancing at quite a pace still. So NV sandbagging to the point where it holds back the gaming industry would make heads roll. 

 

The point is, these companies have so many moving parts, that it's hard not to look at the bottom line. It's all about sustaining and accelerating company growth. I'm not going to comment on whether that's a good or a bad thing, but that's what companies do. I won't call any of them great (maybe for their economic status in the market) I may call their products great, but otherwise, these aren't philanthropic institutions. They don't do it at a marginal profit in order for us to enjoy hardware. They do it because there's large sums of capital involved.

Though it was only 6 years (2011), not 10 years. AMD was competitive before the Sandy Bridge era, though not ahead at that time. The main thing seems to be that Intel expected to be upgrading the Process Nodes far, far sooner. 14nm got pushed back, originally, then 10nm is badly delayed. Thus Intel has ended up with at least 2 extra years on a uArch longer than they anticipated just 5 years ago.  As with X299, it's far less that Intel has made any terrible decisions and far more that all of this stuff just has happened at once.

 

Now, they have been sandbagging a lot, but some of that is down to Process delays. The rest is down to pushing advancement costs money, so you don't waste R&D when AMD is a mile behind. Or, it's very possible that Sandy Bridge was simply just that revolutionary and there's not a lot of room to actually improve upon it. We might be approaching a convergence point where the x86 cores can only go so far before you start to run into situations where it's only Trade-Offs for per-core improvements. Which would explain the rise of AVX and adding more & more instruction sets.

As someone who was playing on their first family PC in 1994, it amazes me how slowly cpu's are progressing these days. 

 

I got back into Pc's about 3 years ago. The CPU i got at the time was a 4690... 4 core 3.5/3.9ghz....

 

3 years later mainstream CPU's are barely better... maybe a 15% improvement? (4.5ghz turbo on the 7700k - albeit with HT).

 

Back in the day you'd be wanting a CPU bordering on an order of magnitude better before you upgraded!

 I too am in the same boat (first pc in 89 and before that we had a c64),  I think this has more to do with silicon tech and the fact that mass computing power is not need by the masses anymore than any artificial marketing strategy.   Game software used to push hardware to the limits all the time but now there are very few that require you to have the absolute latest in everything to be able to play.  Add to that nearly every business application can run on 5 year old hardware just fine (including cad/PLC etc).

Yes coming out with Ryzen considering their financial state is pretty astounding.

Fixed the above. Also no AMD caught up to Haswell level of IPC (2014) not Sandy Bridge (2011), with IF at stock freq.

Actually AMD has been far more present on the GPU front than CPU front so Nvidia have had to actually compete. Don't forget the majority of sales are mid range and the Polaris architecture competes very well in that space.

Great products yes. Great company far from it. They absolutely shafted Titan X Pascal owners by releasing the 1080Ti that ties/beats it for half the cost AND then releasing the Titan Xp to be the new best card. All whilst still on the Pascal architecture so clearly planned.

Means nothing to anyone with a CPU from haswell and up. The only selling point might be M.2 and thunderbolt support but the perf gains for the investment of a CPU and MOBO just aren't there

Having only recently upgraded from the FX-8370 to Ryzen, the FX served my needs quite well, considering.  I was able to game on it without any issues.  It was performing pretty much between the i3 and i5 (based on 4th gen), and that was without doing any overclocking.  It may not have been a great architecture, but it wasn't horrible, either.

Coffee Lake is what Kaby Lake should've been, I am ignoring it even if motherboard compatibility is a thing, I'll only replace my i7 7700 for a 10nm processor, or who knows if performance bump is still meaningless and Intel keeps only caring for power efficient on the mainstream segment I'll wait until 7nm altogether lol.

You misunderstood the correction. I was correcting "technology Intel has had for a decade" They had it for a little over half a decade. Sandy bridge was 2011 not 2007.
