With latest mainframe, IBM wants to encrypt everything always

“The last generation of mainframes did encryption very well and very fast, but not in bulk,” Ross Mauri, general manager of IBM's mainframe business, said in an interview. Mauri estimates that only 4 percent of data stolen since 2013 was ever encrypted.

The key, according to IBM officials, is an update to the computer chips driving the powerful mainframe servers that house corporate or institutional information and process millions of transactions a day worldwide. The company's latest mainframe processor devotes 6 billion transistors to encryption alone, reflecting a four-fold increase over today's standards, said Mauri.

 

 

“One of the big problems is that way too much information is stored in clear text,” Austin Carson, executive director of the technology think tank TechFreedom said. "But universal or pervasive encryption, he added, could help ensure that even if hackers successfully broke into a company's network, any information they found there would be impossible to decode. “That would be a huge step forward just in terms of protecting a much larger body of information,” Carson said.


For IBM, encryption is also a massive business opportunity. Businesses spend over $1 trillion a year making sure that their security meets government standards, according to company officials. One aspect of IBM's new approach to mainframes is the concept of automating that compliance work, using artificial intelligence to check that what's being protected passes regulatory muster in various industries. In doing so, IBM expects to turn a chunk of that annual compliance spending into revenue for itself. And that's on top of the roughly $500,000 it expects to charge new customers for using IBM's newest mainframe technology. Most businesses, said Mauri, will be upgrading from an existing setup, so the cost for those clients could be less.

 

So basically encrypt the data more, and faster, so it's harder to steal. Great. Still expensive as though, so small business probably won't adopt it.

If the description is accurate, then there wasn't really any breakthrough. All they did was devote more hardware to a specific function. 

 

It's cool they've done this but I can't see it being revolutionary

Yeah, but it is a good step forward after all the recent store credit card transaction leaks in

the last year or so. Completely encrypting data all the time is another milestone toward the end goal of being able to do work on the data without ever decrypting it, and boy would that be great.

So how will this work when governments start demanding things be decrypted?  We are seeing it more and more, eventually sanity will win out (like that will ever happen), or the governments of the world will finally just outlaw encryption they can't access.

EPYC encrypts data in ram , nothing else . It also only uses AES 128 , which isn't the most complex encryption available.

This is pretty cool, but I wonder to what extent the encryption goes, if it's just decrypted inside the CPU then it's really cool but I wonder if that's really entirely the case. 

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Every time they reduce the cost of encrypting mass data, the more businesses will take it up, so the lower the chance your personal data gets stolen. Sounds pretty good to me.

 

Why must every idea, innovation, breakthrough or trial receive derisory and condescending remarks on these forums, do some of you guys actually think you know more than the specialists who lead the world with this stuff?  It happens almost regardless what the news is. 

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Respond with a resolute "no", and watch them helplessly throw a tantrum. That's about all we can do. They can outlaw it all they want but how would they actually go about enforcing that?

 

The only thing they could do is seize "ownership" of the infrastructure, and shut it all down, allowing only themselves to use it (and even then people would probably find a way to circumvent them)
