On July 12, there will be a protest and an opportunity to once again make your voice heard in the fight to defend net neutrality.  Several notable websites and large internet based companies are listed as participants.  If you would like to join this protest, information can be found in the link below.

  • WHAT IS NET NEUTRALITY?

    Net neutrality is the basic principle that protects our free speech on the Internet. "Title II" of the Communications Act is what provides the legal foundation for net neutrality and prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from slowing down and blocking websites, or charging apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience (which they then pass along to consumers.)

  • WHY IS NET NEUTRALITY IMPORTANT?

    The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas. Without net neutrality, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider puts in front of you.

  • WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON JULY 12TH?

    Websites, Internet users, and online communities will come together to sound the alarm about the FCC’s attack on net neutrality. We'll provide tools for everyone to make it super easy for your followers / visitors to take action. From the SOPA blackout to the Internet Slowdown, we've shown time and time again that when the Internet comes together, we can stop censorship and corruption. Now, we have to do it again!

I don't get it. I was throttled before NN after it was passed my ISP simply updated some fine print or stretched their wording and I am still throttled. Also why do big companies only care now? We all knew how hard they fought to get it passed and when it did no one cared to preserve it? It will be fun though to see large companies with lots of money vs the US government who needs money to stay a thing.

OP you are miss informed, I suggest reading some of the other posts in the forum on this subject. Net Neutrality was illegally passed. Congress had no involvement with the passing of this, the FCC gave itself added powers with this which is not legal. Net Neutrality was a hoax from the beginning and produced zero results on the promises made. The FCC cannot increase its powers without the consent of congress.

This will affect nothing. ISPs who didn't care what you did still won't, and the shitty ISPs who still imposed stupid restrictions will still impose them whether this petition does anything or not.

Though ISPs will always be scum sadly. They would charge you for air if they could. And limit it daily. 

Definitely depends where you live but fiber expansion is so slow and they do not care much.

Now I did not link anything specific to the enumerated powers in this argument but everything I talk about can be found simply by researching the powers given to congress and the implied powers given to government entities. Hillsdale College, Cornell Law School and Drake University are all great resources to research Constitutional law.

Either way no matter how anyone argues for Net Neutrality the current ruling must be removed and redone correctly or otherwise everything done under the passing of the FCC ruling for Net Neutrality is Illegal and cannot be enforced properly.

 

I support Net Neutrality as long as it is done legally. Governmental entities (such as the FCC) do not have the ability to grant itself more powers not granted to it by Congress as the FCC is a position filled by appointment not a voted in by population position. And only the powers granted/enumerated to Congress by the States.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what net neutrality is.

The FCC was entirely capable of "passing a bill" for net neutrality because there was no bill to be passed. Net neutrality is not a new law. It's a reclassification of broadband which makes it regulated under already existing laws. This is something (which I believe, from the research I have done) the FCC is entirely capable of doing. In fact, the current plans is for the FCC to reclassify broadband again, without congress having to vote on a bill so the new FCC is doing the exact same thing as the old one.

 

This story you are telling where the FCC tried to pass a bill but failed, and then just went ahead and implemented it themselves, it never happened. What actually happened was that the FCC tried to solve the problems without reclassifying broadband at first.

The FCC tried to implement new regulations to prevent slow/fast-lanes but were sued by Verizon. Verizon won because the FCC had no authority to enforce net neutrality rules on the Internet because it was not considered a common carrier. After that they held the public discussion about reclassifying it as a common carrier and as you probably know, they voted for reclassification.

I believe during that court case the FCC was also advised that broadband should be reclassified as Title II, could be wrong it's been a while.

And so the court concluded that the FCC has no authority to apply common-carrier obligations — like nondiscrimination and no-blocking rules — to broadband providers.

Yep

I can't remember if the court itself told the FCC to reclassify it if they wanted to apply net neutrality rules, but I know that at least Obama advice them to reclassify it.

 

So I find it very hard to believe that the FCC would not have the authority to reclassify it. I think the misunderstanding stems from that lawsuit where Verizon sued them (and won) for trying to apply net neutrality rules when broadband was not classified as a common carrier. They did not have the authority to apply net neutrality rules without title 2 classification, but they had the authority to reclassify.

If Obama said it, it's probably not legal for them to do so.  I wouldn't trust a thing that man told me.  If Obama told me the sky was blue, I'd go look to make sure.  He did so many illegal things during his reign terms in office, he should have been impeached.  Only the cowardice of the GOP kept that from happening.

In regards to the court case between the FCC and Verizon, here's what happened.

 

Verizon sued the FCC and won the case, because the FCC net neutrality rules were illegal because broadband wasn't classified under Title II. However, the judge also ruled that the FCC has the authority to reclassify broadband carriers under Title II and in doing so, would allow the net neutrality rules to be in effect.

 

That's what the FCC did, they reclassified broadband carriers under Title II and put the net neutrality rules in effect.

 

The current FCC is looking to overturn that and reclassify broadband ISP's back under Title I. 

 

Is Net Neutrality perfect, no. However, I'd rather have it in place then then having to put my trust in faith in a company like Comcast promising not screw over the internet.
