right good, I want AMDs CPUs to be good, not because I'm a fanboy, but because AMD has reasonable pricing that I can afford, meaning that I might be able to get one of these CPUs which to be honest would be fucking awesome

the name compared to 1998X which I think everyone called it before is much better, but my rant from yesterday on the naming schemes of CPUs and Chipsets still stands as the name has no links to the CPU in any way

I'll be on the Skylake-X train at some point.  In the "Performance vs Value" discussion, I generally fall on the performance side.  As it stands, I presently game and edit on an overclocked 5960X; I just didn't see the use in moving to a 6950X when I knew X299 was coming "any day now".  So I waited.

 

Now that X299 and socket 2066 is here, I'm debating the CPU.  I don't think I can properly utilize 36 vcores with the editing software I use (Premiere Pro trips over its own dick if you hand it too many cores).  And I'd prefer faster clock speeds.  So for this go-round, I might actually pick one of the lower-priced 7900-series chips.  Perhaps even the 10-core.  My gut tells me that even 20 vcores might be too much for the software to properly utilize.

 

We'll see.

imho the 14-16-18core won't overclock high enough not for the power limit, but for the heat limit:

we have already seen the 10 core arrive at 5ghz delidded and at 4.8 non-delidded, but the main point is that they were running at 90 degrees on an i115. Now, i know that everyone buying a 1500$ cpu should/will have a custom loop that will perform better, but my point is that for the first time even a custom loop will not remove the heat fast enough from the package of an 16-18 core cpu to overclock too high. I bet that the 18 core won't oc higher than 4.4 on all cores not because you hit a  "silicon limit" like it has always been ( a limit that you can in some extent overcome with LN2) but because you hit the thermal limit of your cpu cooler .

 

another thought:

in my eyes right now threadripper is the real workstation cpu

meanwhile, x299 is the enthusiast cpu platform

Wouldn't the latency be not much more than between CCXs? It's still using infinity fabric to communicate between dies.

Infinity fabric is more or less only a protocoll. On Epic it uses the PCIe tranceivers for inter CPU communication. If you have to go off chip / die you are allwasy slower than on the die itself. If not, you did a bad job on the die.

Memory speed helps both platforms, in gaming & in general. While Mem Speed does effect the Infinity Fabric, the actual change % in things like Game Benchmarking is almost equal between Ryzen & the Kaby Lake 4c CPUs.  Almost all of the Launch narratives are dead when it comes to the state of the technical capacities of Intel vs AMD right now.  It's much of the reason why I'm really looking forward to the benchmarking & comparison results between X299 & Threadripper. We don't know where things are going to land, though we can predict some things.  (But, how cleanly to things scale?)

Not sure at this point. Ryzen slid down on the priority list by quite the margin. As it stands, I'll probably get a fursuit before I build yet another system that I don't have room for.
