THIS - Back when I actually bought blu-rays I wanted to rip them onto my library and I couldn't do it legally. You'd think after seeing what the music industry went through, the movie industry would realize more DRM equals more pirates, not the other way around. But they're dumb as a pile of hay.

Either I'm missing something, or you all are, because I could swear I can already do this via AnyDVD HD.

Wouldn't you just needn't a standard drive that supports reading bd-xl or whatever they call it that can read up to 4 layers? Those have been around for years, if they are even using that spec. I have two drives that support it.

 

but I would also like to see this happen.

Off topic: How do you plan on storing the data? Do you have a large NAS set-up?

You can rip 4K UHD Blu-Rays to MKV file using AnyDVD HD?

 

I'm not talking about 1080p Blu-Rays.

Same here, I got a 40" 4K monitor (Philips BDM4065UC) and I want to watch UHD BluRays on it.

I have 6x 3TB HDD's (2x Seagate ST3000's and 4x Toshiba 7200's) - I'm switching between setups right now - historically I ran them in a ZFS RAIDZ1 pool on FreeNAS, then I tried out Windows Server 2016 Storage Spaces, but wasn't quite happy with the setup. I may return to FreeNAS 9.x, or I might look at ESXi + something else.

Seriously. I pay a special tax for all storage device I buy, just because Sweden has a law which legally allows me to make copies of media for personal use. I Pay for the privilege of making backups. Then these assholes comes and puts DRM which makes it so that I can't make backups, nor can I watch the video I actually bought on whichever device I want.

you underestimate my downloading needs. i max out 100mbit on a daily basis.

didn't the netherlands have something similar? i thought they where unique in that they had home copy tax. this was a compromise for legally being able to download from illegal sources i thought, which they recently banned.

This is really great! I've been waiting for the opportunity to rip my UHD Blu-rays, they are starting to pile up. Now I just need a new HDD, my current 4TB one for Blu-ray is almost full.. 10TB it is!

nah i just switch things around a lot, i actually have not that much storage which leads to me deleting it only to redownload it later.

Usually the torrents most people get are like 2GB in size for a crappy 1080p copy a descent one is like 10GB but a really good one is like 50GB which is normal BluRay. 4K discs max out at 100GB in storage size so they have to work with what they have and reduce quality in order to fit it on. You loose quality with a higher resolution with UHD BluRay. It's not worth it. Digital mediums are going to take over at some point but really HDD's need to come down in price for it to really take off properly. Would be nice if there wasn't really any limitation in storage.

60GB is not a normal Blu-Ray. Commercial Blu-Ray movies top out at 50 GB dual layered discs.

 

Without special features, etc, most Blu-Ray movies come in around the 25GB to 35GB range, especially if you strip out all the other languages besides the main master HD track.
