Galax announces single slot 1070

Mr.Meerkat
Quote

PC components maker and AiC partner Galax has unveiled its "2017 Secret Weapon" - an as yet unnamed single slot GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card. Galax utilises a short PCB with an extension housing the cooling fan, creating a slim but long PCI-E card.

I think everyone's main and only question is "how hot does it run?".

To be honest, I can't really see that many scenarios where you need a card that's only a single slot, except maybe when building the smallest possible mini ITX rig or maybe Linus going with mutiple 1070s on a X99 motherboard with all PCI/PCIe slots being full sized PCIe slots :P

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

I do wonder how many people use DVI with a 1070.

I use a Maxwell Titan X with DVI :(

At least one here, since my 144z 1080p monitor took a shit, and I'm back on my old 1600x1050 monitor for now.  Dvi only lol.

Don't worry, you're not the only one that uses DVI, my 120Hz monitor only supports 120Hz over DVI as it doesn't have DP...

I have done. I have a 144 Hz monitor that doesn't have DP, so the only way to get it is over dual link DVI. The HDMI version on monitor doesn't support it.

Reading up on DVI, I was a bit suprised to find out it can do 60Hz at 2560x1600, so I guess if you're aiming for a setup that will never dip below 60Hz at that resolution, DVI is not limiting you.

Or like if you're using the card for GPU accelerated editing in a workstation.

Because you know of matx boards with 4 pcie x16 slots?

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Sarcasm?

With the current state of SLI that will never happen even with a compatible board.

There are however many boards with 3x x16 pcie.

The 1070 has the same tdp as this card:

I dont think it will be that bad.

Plenty in korea. Dual link dvi is very popular there still for some reason

But the GTX480 and 7990 both had considerably larger coolers where it's safe to assume they had coolers with more cooling capacity thus making TDP less relevant as they should be able to dissipate more heat...assuming technology for coolers hasn't moved forward :P

That was a long sentence :P

Also, what does the 480 and the 7990 to do with this single slot 1070 (except for both being loud cards)?

Wow, I was really hoping to see single-slot GTX 1060 since 10-series release. And now we have 1070.

Nothing...except they were both really hot and loud cards :P

Original poster I replied to talked about how Galax would have needed some magic for the card to not run like a jet engine so I gave him 2 of the loudest coolers :P

3 way SLI would look more neat and would have more room to "breathe". It might be loud and throttle a bit though. I would prefer GTX 1060 and lower tier ones having such option or even focusing entirely on single slot only. GTX 1070 and up... I am not convinced it is a wise choice. Especially in ATX PC.

My immediate thought was that this has to be underclocked. There's no way it's running at FULL clockspeed and FULL TDP.

If I were them, I'd lower the clockspeed from around 1500Mhz to about 1200Mhz and lower the TDP by around 20 watts.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Oneplus 6 (Early 2023 to present) | HP Envy 15" x360 R7 5700U (Mid 2021 to present) | Steam Deck (Late 2022 to present)

Mid 2023 AlTech Desktop Refresh - AMD R7 5800X (Mid 2023), XFX Radeon RX 6700XT MBA (Mid 2021), MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon (Early 2018), 32GB DDR4-3200 (16GB x2) (Mid 2022

Noctua NH-D15 (Early 2021), Corsair MP510 1.92TB NVMe SSD (Mid 2020), beQuiet Pure Wings 2 140mm x2 & 120mm x1 (Mid 2023),

If this is like the 750ti they did, it will be available only wednesdays between 14:55 and 15:00 behind a truck on the docks in Malaysia, if your first name starts with Z and you can provide a shirt full of bees as payment.

TL;DR vapourware

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.
