Adobe issues emergency update to Flash after ransomware attacks

Adobe Systems Inc (ADBE.O) issued an emergency update on Thursday to its widely used Flash software for Internet browsers after researchers discovered a security flaw that was being exploited to deliver ransomware to Windows PCs.

The software maker urged the more than 1 billion users of Flash on Windows, Mac, Chrome and Linux computers to update the product as quickly as possible after security researchers said the bug was being exploited in "drive-by" attacks that infect computers with ransomware when tainted websites are visited.

Japanese security software maker Trend Micro Inc (4704.T) said that it had warned Adobe that it had seen attackers exploiting the flaw to infect computers with a type of ransomware known as 'Cerber' as early as March 31.

Cerber "has a 'voice' tactic that reads aloud the ransom note to create a sense of urgency and stir users to pay," Trend Micro said on its blog.

Adobe's new patch fixes a previously unknown security flaw. Such bugs, known as "zero days," are highly prized because they are harder to defend against since software makers and security firms have not had time to figure out ways to block them. They are typically used by nation states for espionage and sabotage, not by cyber criminals who tend to use widely known bugs for their attacks.

A new vulnerability on Adobe's products make IT experts and regular users doubt: should we start looking for alternatives? Is flash becoming an insecure option for users?

I just don't have flash or reader installed.

 

Problem Solved.

 

 

and the fact that Chrome supports .pdf natively now.  No need.!

Also most things are using html5 now so that helps too.

Ever since Adobe's lead team left they have gone way down. All there updates to CC are garbage and are just taking out features that are broken instead of fixing them. Not to mention the horrible optimization of all their products. Honestly thinking of moving over to a mac pro for video editing after seeing hardware canucks video on it

Just keeping this here as a Use flash almost everyday since a lot of vloggers decided to jump on the 60fps train and make it look like there always on a god damn rollercoaster, lucky enough a lot of them are finally starting to see that and have now reverted back to 30fps. Thanks adobe :)

I've had flash on click to play for a while, and it's great. I enable flash on websites that clearly need it enabled to access core content, but otherwise I just leave it disabled and enjoy the slight performance boost that comes with not having flash running for ads etc. It also means that I shouldn't be vulnerable to attacks like this.

It'll be a mixture of laziness and difficulty. Swapping to HTML5 takes a while as they will have to recode their whole video streaming service and player to function properly with HTML5. It took YouTube a while to make the jump to HTML5.

Pretty glad it's largely viable to run without Flash nowadays, though I've my sister mad at me since ripping out Flash on my laptop killed off some of her favorite browser games. She piped down a bit (after awhile) after I told her it was my laptop to secure how I want.

I have Flash on "ask to activate" so there's that.

I pretty much have to use flash due to Twitch, my local news station's website and a few other places like that. If they all switched to HTML5, that'd be great...

I don't have flash installed and refuse to do so. Twitch is the only thing needing flash at this point that I use and I would love if they switched over already. Chrome isn't my daily driver, but I have to keep it installed with a bunch of Twitch bookmarks because of flash...
