Box Box Box - Sim Racing Players Club [Now Hype Train Enabled!]

So Finally got my Logitech G27 Ordered and grabbing it this weekend (got one a t a great price) Now I know its no where close to some of its competitors but I've had one before and It was really good for its price and I enjoyed it.

I was running it back then with a 27" single screen as well as a DK2, now the DK res was nowhere good enough for Pcars or Assetto but for Dirt Rally it was really enjoyable and great fun for friends. so going to go buy a bucket seat that'll I'll move into the Time attack car at a later date and got a spare dash I'll be cutting up and building the sim around and extend the Steering column off the G27.

My big question does anyone here have the New rift/Vive and would you say they are worth it? I'm going to look at doing triple 27" but at a much later date/space but for now will be using a 27" curved from work. Just keen to see what guys think.

congrats on the wheel

I'd say to just get 3x 27" monitor setup. but that is coming from a person who tried VR and got motion sickness ... never could get adjustment to not get motion sick

If you can handle VR without getting sick, thats definitely the go to - and much more affordable if you can snag one at the crazy discounted rates. Not sure if the second gen headsets will be rolling out anytime soon but CES is just around the corner.

As someone who has triple 27s atm (MG279 + 2x VN279) I can attest that it takes up a massive amount of room, even with the outer panels rotated inwards. Also goodluck finding a reasonably priced monitor stand if you're going that route (cheapest is the Monoprice but its not the strongest). For the resolution, I'd much rather go with a 34" 1440p curved ultrawide (also cheaper than triple panels if you're going for high refresh rate). Its a great compromise between daily usable space and reasonable resolution for gaming, although you do need a beefy GPU to drive this resolution smoothly (in either case).

The 1080 is the absolute minimum.

Thanks guys, Yeah with walking around games I got crazy motion sickness, With driving, games had no issues with it, so might be lucky there.

@chaozbandit Thanks man, so you actually rate ultrawide curves as the way to go, as I said I'll be starting with a 27" one, Whats your thought process on a single 34" PC monitor as a balance of space/price/immersion? I mean I never had any issues before running just the one 27"

yeah a 1080 ain't happening anytime soon, Not when I've got a time attack car in the garage I've entered into this years series.

yeah a 1080 ain't happening anytime soon, Not when I've got a time attack car in the garage I've entered into this years series.

Productivity wise I rarely use more than 2 displays even at 27", and thats often with 2 fullscreened applications or 3/4 that are aero snapped. Ive recently started making use of virtual desktops so I can have another dedicated for "entertainment" (youtube/spotify/foobar) but this can easily be interchanged with the third display.

But when I'm actually doing "work" two displays is the sweet spot. A 34" 1440p panel will have roughly 75% of the same display resolution as two 27" 1440p panels but you rarely notice the loss when you're snapping programs or using virtualized deskptops.

That being said Ive also spent a lot of time with a Dell U3417w curved ultrawide, and aside from its panel defects, it's made me seriously reconsider my asus mg279q (both were purchased around the same time and cost the same $1000 CAD two years ago). IMHO the ultrawide has more than enough resolution to get most people by while not being too large physically, although my table(s) are very minimalistic so I have desk space to spare.

Immersion wise I actually prefer the dell in some cases because of the wider FOV. Playing BF4/1 from time to time really made me appreciate the extra info in my periphery, but outside of shooters it didn't wow me that much.  On the other hand when you get the MG279q to 120+ hz the gameplay feels so much smoother and more enjoyable; at least in racing titles where I spend most of my time, it's worth the tradeoff of losing peripheral vision for a better main display. When I'm running just the single monitor I have a TrackIR to supplement my POV to get a better sense of car placement and one of the other displays is left to monitor other items.

tl;dr a 34" ultrawide is the way to go if you spend most of your time working than gaming and most of the time your second/third displays will be idle, even if they're 27" 1440p panels. Unless you plan on having bookshelf speakers on the same desk as your monitor, the ultrawide will also be better for general entertainment.

Side note: congrats on the time attack car! Is it autox or full track work? I do a fair bit of motorsport photography in the summer if you're ever curious.

Thanks man, lots of great info there, I'm actually going to be running the Sim as an almost Stand-alone system, so my desk I've got one BenQ 144hz 24" and that works for me was thinking of going dual screens but as I mostly play FPS and RPG the second screen will sit there doing nothing so figured just using one would be better, then the sim will have its own screens as the steering and everything is going into a cockpit with a bucket seat. I agree with you on the 144hz thing, for now, I'll prob just buy one large 144hz screen and enjoy that till space allows for me to go to triple screen or even if prices are close I'll just go rift.

Full track competing in the street mod 2wd class. got a Focus ST225 that's been taken up to 360bhp 500nm should go hard :P

and would tell you to come but I live in New Zealand  :P might be a bit far

So in a cool bit, While working on my E36 Coupe friend had a parts car, and the E36 has a pretty nice compact dash part, So looks like for my Box Box I'll be using a real car dash with gauges and an original seat on rails, i'll prob upgrade to a bucket seat at a later date.

Will have to look at an Arduino to get it all running, but super excited for a more real cockpit.

Will also have to figure out an extender for the steering so it can sit out of sight. but sure thats a pretty easy part to come by.

Any Suggestions or anyone has done one of these kinds of setups?

Think most people get by with a wooden frame and then start mounting bits to it. Easier to build to the dimensions you need. Arduino is definitely a good idea to get something like gauges running.

Cant help you too much with the actual wiring tho.

Thanks man, Yeah was also leaning towards wood, got a unlimited supply of high quality treated and shapped wood and find it way easier to work with.

Just seeign that video and knowing its possible gives me faith. Now you figure out how to get the dash out :P

So the upper bit and the stuff on the right all the way down to the Gear stick, the only difference will be we are right side drive so the gearbox is on the other side. but all of that. Minus the steering.

First parts collected,

Now need to figure out the gear selector, Will look for a manual leather gator to make it look flush.

Also will need to order a nice steering, see people saying going up to a 300mm+ Steering killed a lot of the force feedback but I'll prob try find a 280/300 and not a 330.

So many wires coming off the Guage cluster, its going to be damn interesting figuring out how to wire it all up to the Arduino, Will have to buy the more complex ones with lots of inputs and can get the simple one for the Handbrake.
