Fitz doesn't use hard drives at all and only uses SSDs. She has been for a long while now. Crazy I know but it is what she does. Actually, I don't think she even owns a single mechanical drive.

All right, you guys, don't force me to hose you down. ;)

All seriousness aside, I had four 4TB 850 EVOs in the desktop that died on me recently. I would have had Pros in there except Samsung never came out with an 850 Pro in 4TB :( . Each of the data drives from the old desktop has a set of four backup SSDs, also 4TB 850 EVOs: two of each set are local backups and the other two of each set are offsite backups (I keep the offsite backups in my safe deposit box at my credit union and swap them out with my onsite backups no less than once a month to keep them up to date).

The desktop I've been building over the past couple of years or so will be the recipient of five of the new 4TB Pros once I finally finish it (the sixth one will be a spare since I can't get these little buggers locally). The first four will be populated by the data on the four drives from the old desktop, then those four drives will become the backup drives for the new fifth SSD destined for the new desktop.

I have a 2TB 850 EVO in my notebook and carry two more for backups in the notebook's carry case. I don't worry about offsite backups for the notebook since the data on it is replicated on one of the desktop data drives.

Since I'm retired on a so called fixed income, the only way I could afford all these, besides going on a breadless mustard sandwich diet, was I decided to keep my '08 F150 for quite a few more years since it had only 50k miles on it a couple of years ago and is still in excellent condition. That actually has saved me money since all the SSDs cost only a little over half what a new truck would have set me back. With any kind of luck, I'll die before the truck does.

My justification (besides pure lust) for shelling out the shekels for the SSDs is I'm a handicapped senior citizen and lugging backup HDDs to and from my credit union was killing my shoulders and back. And that was back when I had to lug only six HDDs around (I called their transport case the QE2's anchor). Increased speed and taking up less room were delightfull bonuses.

I still have three HDDs, all 2.5". Two are 500GB 7200 rpm WD Blacks and the third is the original 500GB 5400rpm Seagate that was in my notebook. I have no earthly idea why I kept those three; I gave the rest of my HDDs to a friend's husband (she is like a sister to me and himself is the brother I never had).

I've been thinking of going all SSD, but I need larger backup drives like 5tbs+ for storing development and A/V projects.  :/  I don't think there's an SSD that large, so stacking 5-10tb drives is kinda a must for me atm.

They make SSDs up to 16GB but those are enterprise and/or SAS drives, not to mention seriously expensive (we're talking the GDP of a small country here). Samsung is the only one I know of making 4TB consumer SSDs.

The easiest way to backup a drive is to use drives of the same size for the backup drives. Have a 4TB SSD? Use a couple more of the same size drive for the onsite and offsite backups.

Keep in mind that SSDs are not well suited for long term storage, such as setting on a shelf powered down for a year or more. For that, HDDs or tape are the better choice. My onsite and offsite backups get swapped out no less than once a month so they set powered down no more than a month or so.
