Lens talk

1 hour ago, Radium_Angel said:

Man that pisses me off, wastes time looking at them only to find out they are optically garbage.

That really depends. I can technically create a clean room where I live w/o much issues. The real question is where the fungus/haze is (how far in) and has it caused damage to the coatings and optics, if so how badly and if cleaning would be effective for several years.

Every now and then a gem pops up that could justify the risk, esp if successful the hundreds of dollars you save, but that requires 2 things, lens to be good enough to save(and justify the risk), and personal skills, including patience.

That nearly doubled while watching that video. Yes, the guy is a professional, but I could easily see myself trying this and wrecking everything.

Scariest thing I've seen in a while! 🤪

Yea, overall it looks way easier to do then building my watercooled computer 🤣 Just with the catch of "if you screw up it's all garbage, and no going back".

Trying to find such a lens is a hassle however. A year ago you could scour garage sales, right now, only ebay :( Not even the local personal listing sites have anything really of value, most there are trying to get used retail prices or slightly below.

During my searches I found 2 lenses of interest, one had a massive scratch on the front almost right in the middle, the other is my 70-210 f4 in the UK with them complaining about the glass inside shaking, which mine has a little shake to it as well... the first one I bought hoping DHL doesn't get it because according to CP they are doing parcels to Japan so theoretically should be accepting them too.
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Canon-EF-35-105mm-F-5-4-5-AF-Zoom-Lens-SN618127-from-Japan-As-Is-/133445724064?_trksid=p2047675.m43663.l10137&nordt=true&rt=nc&orig_cvip=true

I paid 19 USD on shipping for a $5 item 🤪 However assuming no customs fees, I save about $100 if I pull it off lol, that scratch tho. It's a good Guinea Pig for otherwise trash.

Once it arrives I'll start the operation, just need to buy tweezers 👨‍⚕️ Delivery time: August 17-Oct 7 🤦‍♂️

Note: I bought from that seller in the past, last time it was a 540EZ with a dying display (fully works otherwise), cost about the same total with free shipping. I think they run a camera shop and sell the trash no one wants in Japan.

On a side note:
Henrys has apparently shipped the 2 year warranty on the lens/camera (for the lens) I ordered with the Canon paper, but not the camera/lens itself 🤔 Also unknown carrier, interesting...

And my B&H batteries got shipped with a tracking number that does not work 🤣 Good start for the end of the week.

My Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 was the same way, sans all the traveling. I did a ton of colour runs with it, boatloads of metal shows, and a few fetish shoots. Yours has clearly seen much more, it's also a more versatile lens. Post some of the pics from its adventures!

  • 2 weeks later...

Anyone used the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM or Sony 20mm 1.8 G lenses for the night sky? I was wondering how they compared to my Tokina 20mm f2.

System Specs: Second-class potato, slightly mouldy

The Sony 24 1.4 is really good. Should be better than both the 20's, and better than the Tokina by a long shot.

I used a 500mm reflex lens. I think I posted a shot around here, if not, here it is again

It was an old manual focus (I think reflex lenses are all MF only) lens, so it was full frame, but I think you can get them up to 800mm

Although this was shot with a DX-sensor (Nikon D2x IIRC) which is a 1.5x compared to FF
