Ah, but it's the mk I version. A 70-200mm f4 IS mk I being the same price as a 24-105mm f4 IS mk II makes more sense.

man a Sony E PZ 18-105mm F4 sound really nice for my FS700 but I'd likely get the canon 24-105 over it.

being able to use the zoom rocker while handheld and have nice autofocus but then I can't use it on my photo camera

I'm starting to think about that, the focal range is almost perfect for the studio work I do. (I suppose, if I"m being picky, I'd like something to go out to 85mm, or something like a 28-80 or 24-85 or something like that. Dunno what's out there, haven't really looked)

Have fun 🤣

https://global.canon/en/c-museum/index.html#lens-hall

I found https://global.canon/en/c-museum/product/ef337.html which can be gotten for about $100 USD on ebay, no idea on image quality. There is also a 28-80 2.8-4 built in 1989 which goes for about $300 on ebay.

I love the Canon Museum because it actually gives a decent amount of information on any lens built, it should also help you search for units you might want. You can either use the generic search or go based on the type of lense. The only lense that seems to be within your wished area is the 24-105 f4 sadly.

Typically I would recommend avoiding variable aperture lenses, esp if one has the budget to do so.

I was trying to find images using a 3.5-4.5, but I actually never used my 35-70mm (1987) the days I used my camera 🤣 Most days where 35mm and on the last day, I "borrowed" the T6i users Sigma 105mm 🙄 afterwards I tried to use my EF28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 (II 99 model), but the image imo came out looking like half assed shit... So instead I took the T6i and used it instead as they tried to control the kid, sadly never got those pics from the owner lol...

Great lens in the right conditions, sadly 3 Adults with cameras and a kid w/o one wasn't the right condition... The f4.5 images came out rather decent however:

Agreed. When I stared with photography, I bought whatever cheap MF (this was in the Pentax film days) lens I thought was interesting.

Later, when switching to Nikon, I got a 50mm f/1.8 and began to understand the power of fast lenses.

When I became a concert photographer, I lived and died by f/2.8. But upgrading all my gear to constant aperture fast lenses....isn't cheap.

Yep same, however for me it comes down to price since it is a hobby, plus the pandemic. Sadly a lot of the lenses shipped from Japan either are basically soon to be junk or can be (haze fungus etc), or shipped via UPS 0 customs done unlike B&H which hits really hard with their ridiculous markups. Would really like to try to get my hands on that f2.8-4 i mentioned tho. I also ordered a Canon Rebel XS/3000 which comes with a 28-80 lens just doesn't state what lense 😂 The real question is do I get the "Digital XS" or the film "3000" I don't know, I'm leaning towards the film/cheap lens however, which is fine, "history".

On the plus side Canon hasn't foolishly marked up the 24-105 f4 lens for the RF mount. Tho if I can get used I would rather do that, I've lived w/o IS in the past I think I can live w/o it now.

@Egg-Roll

That "Toronto Railway" pic is awful. Not sure what went wrong there.

So on a different topic, I have two lenses, a  Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS USM L lens for my 1D Mark II N, and a Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8-4.

I decided to test them back to back, using a tripod, and identical settings (1/40 sec, ISO 100, f/8) to see if I could see if the cost for the L glass was worth it.

You tell me which is which

(I hosed up the colour correction, had camera set on cloudy and on the 2nd shot, the sun came out...then it started raining, so the WB is off, sorry)

No post work is done on these pics, except to crop them to be as close to one another as possible (another screw up on my part, I forgot the L glass was full frame, and the Sigma designed for crop bodies and the 1D Mark II N is a crop body. Ooops, ID10T error)

If that is the right lense to the images then I would say that lense is in a decent condition (according to Henrys a 8/8+) considering its age, May 1991.

Also I found it's younger sibling 😂 For a minute I thought they were identical.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Excellent-Canon-EF-28-80mm-f-2-8-4-L-USM-AF-Lens-from-Japan/254649481696?hash=item3b4a4ab9e0:g:uQMAAOSwzLFfCGJ3

The worst offenders are the ones that say Exc++++ (or similar), then in the description state has some haze or some dust and/or fungus, I seen so many of those and they demand such a high price. As long as they put it in the description you will have a hard time fighting it.

The problem with the $350 price tag for me is it/many being shipped via Fedex/UPS (or any shipping cost for that matter + possible/guaranteed import fees) is currency and custom fees would push it to about $650 at least, where as I can actually pick up a 24-105 f4 for $699 at Henry's right now, tack on the 3 yr warranty, and off to the races you go. I got slammed by UPS with $45 (CAD) for a 27.50 USD purchase price, because Madrinas decided to put full value instead of paid amount, even so the cost from UPS was still far too high, hence I won't patronize anyone using them outside of Canada, w/o a clear total.

On the plus side I got my EN-4 Watson battery and I can see where the complaints are about it being a tight fit, but it was charging, other 2 are still backordered sadly. Weirdly my MH-15 charger rapid flashes for all batteries, yet now all batteries based on the camera are fully charged 🤔 I'll try to get out and shoot things with it, eventually.

Like I said a kid made things hard 🤣 Thanks to the pandemic I couldn't try to figure out what happened this year as well (was working at the time and only had the weekend off, weekends usually where house work etc). The picture I shared was literally the last one of the day and was the better of the 3 I tried/kept... Maybe something's wrong with the optics when zoomed out near to/max or maybe my hand wasn't stable enough, or the settings where wrong, idk. I do know it was a fairly bright day out nice weather, really no excuse for the image being so bad...

I would say the Sample1.jpg is the better one, the wood is far more detailed, the overall detail on the Yashica looks better as well, the blacks look black instead of a dark grey, the background green doesn't look like it is ready to start a forest fire either. While I do like the rustic look the wood gives in Sample 2 I know for a fact that is highly unlikely the real world color.

I'm also assuming you had both lenses set to 70mm or equivalent? Which would likely be 70mm to make the comparison as equal as possible since both would be at f4.

As for you goof up, it's ok, I actually put the 24mm EF-S (from the T6i) on my RP last year and only figured out today why it basically produced similarly to my 35mm lens quality of images 😅 Simple mistakes happen, sometimes you might not catch them for a while, because they don't cause issues lol. Also sorry for the long delay, Pokemon Go raid hour in Japan (5am local), local Raid hour, then another raid hour (last 20 minutes) afterwards, all the while trying to make dinner... Only just finished eating 20 minutes ago.

I also remember watching this video trying to make my choice on to RP or not to RP :P Tho I did not rewatch it to compare your images, as that would be cheating.

the difference is often when wide open most lenses clean up as you raise them.

Later, when switching to Nikon, I got a 50mm f/1.8 and began to understand the power of fast lenses.

When I became a concert photographer, I lived and died by f/2.8. But upgrading all my gear to constant aperture fast lenses....isn't cheap.

I'd be you wish the simga 18-35 F1.8 and 50-100 were out sooner

Yea, the 17-35 f/2.8 was as fast as I had.

For the most part, 2.8 was enough, but sometimes the concerts had such bad lighting, I had to crank the ISO way up, and then post-process the Hell out of the images, trying to salvage them. (I *hated* shooting 3rd tier metal fests, where the lighting engineer only used red for lighting)

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.
