[RANT] Windows 10 refuses to accept the fact that it's update DOESN'T FUCKING WORK on my laptop...

Mnky313

While this relates to Windows 10 idk if it should go here or in the Windows 10 section
Ok, so I have this old laptop that I most likely won't upgrade for a while. I enjoy the massive port selection and docking among many other things.
Anyway, currently it is stuck on 1809.
EVERY FUCKING DAY without fail windows tell me there is important updates that need to be installed and only gives me the option to restart now, restart tonight, or schedule a restart. I have to keep scheduling a restart and then just turning off the schedule everyday.
If that wasn't annoying enough, recently it has decided TO REMOVE THE GOD DAMN SCHEDULE button! So I literally can't do shit, I can restart now or have it restart later that night.
unknown.png?width=400&height=146
Now you might say 'well than just update it' that's where the problem is, every time it tries to apply the update the same shit happens:
it restarts some time i'm not there without my knowledge
does some shit that I never see
I come back and all the screens are black
The only thing I can do is press the power button, once I press it it immediately turns off (no holding the button, no shutdown screen)
I turn it back on and wait another 20-30 minutes just for it reboot AGAIN and then tell me 'there was a problem installing updates'
like NO SHIT, maybe if the update didn't work the first 4 FUCKING TIMES you tried it probably isn't going to work the 5th time...
unknown.png
I have nothing but problems like this with windows 10, I have never been able to keep a single windows install for a year or longer, every few months I need to reinstall it (and I guess i'm going to have to re-install it AGAIN).
And for everyone who always comes back with the argument that it's the eGPU, or it's insert some other jank thing I have with my setup I have problems on every device, my mom's perfectly normal Toshiba satellite will constantly lock files and you have to go into properties and unlock the file. It also doesn't think half the built in apps are installed, photos (the windows media viewer app) doesn't open on hers even though it's all updated and everything.
My old normal desktop (FX-4350 w/ GTX 960) had just as many problems, it's not because of the eGPU it's because windows 10 is fucking awful. Even before that, my old toshiba satellite had several problems as well....

why no dark mode?

Have you tried updating it while you're sitting there, so you can at least see how far along it gets in the process? You'd be able to see potential symptoms or error codes that may allow you to figure out why it's failing to update.

Aside from that, why not just disable Windows Updates? There are guides on how to do it - though depending on the method, you may eventually need to re-disable them:

https://www.easeus.com/todo-backup-resource/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-automatically-update.html

https://www.wintips.org/how-to-turn-off-windows-10-updates-permanently/

Note: This one advocates for renaming system files - do any of these at your own risk

Funnily enough I have an 8350 and a 960 and since Win7 is depreciating I installed Win10 on a spare HDD and it's a joke. Shit crashes, fails, or otherwise doesn't work and I've had it blue screen on me 2 days in to the install. I installed Firefox and it kept crashing, and I think was a time it caused the PC to crash. Aside from general stability issues, there's a long list of other shit I don't like about it, namely "Do you want to share some or all of your data with Microsoft?" Add to that the fact that to install Win10 it now FORCES you to register and link it to a MS account, which I sure as fuck don't want. The only way to make a local account is for me to physically remove my Wifi.

The stupid volume adjustment pop up. Who the fuck needs that and why can't you disable it?

You have to do a regedit to be able to just boot to desktop and skip the login screen and password.

It pre-loads a bunch of fucking bullshit apps and programs that should just be immediately deleted.

probably a lot more shit I can't remember right now.

Aside from snapping in 4 corners on all 3 monitors, there's not shit Win10 does that makes me desire it more than Win7, which I haven't had a problem with in years. And Win10 does this super cool thing where the corners all have a 5-10 pixel barrier to accommodate for window snapping, except it's on ALL THE TIME, so every time I try to close a window on another monitor the cursor gets stuck and I have to wiggle it out of the barrier and back to the close button.

What's super cool is that when you're dragging a window, if you're "slow" around a monitor edge the mouse will stick to the edge and run vertically in a locked plane. If you want to move to another monitor, you just push against it harder/quicker and it moves. Why in the fuck isn't the corner lock only on when you're dragging a window? They clearly have the capability.

Yeah, I am aware I could disable Windows Update and honestly don't know why I haven't disabled it this time. This was more of just a rant because I've had it do this shit several times. As for trying to figure out what is causing it, i'm at a loss, it just comes on and goes to the normal 'Windows is updating XX%' screen, gets to 100%, than reboots and says it failed. Similar to this, my desktop's AMD driver always fails (goes through the entire setup just to say 'driver install partially successful' and only install the actual driver and HDMI audio driver (not adrenaline control center or all the other stuff.)

Yeah, I agree the volume shit is annoying. And they really need to stop fucking forcing people to use a microsoft account, the process to create a local account instead is ridiculous, you have to unplug ethernet, then go through the 3 different things saying to use the Microsoft account, then set up 3 REQUIRED security questions. I'm very close to switching back to my windows 7 install but it's problematic with my eGPU.

The snapping on the edge of a monitor actually annoys me becuase I rarely snap things to half a monitor and it ends up just getting the mouse caught on the edge of monitors constantly.

I am thinking about going to PopOS! I would rather switch to manjaro because my desktop runs Manjaro and windows 10, but I get weird errors while installing manjaro, stuff like 'HARDWARE ERROR: CPU FAULT'... and even if I disable that hardware detection thing it still doesn't boot...
I really like my fingerprint reader though but if this shit keeps up I might just buy a USB fingerprint reader.

Manjaro is infinitely better than anything Debian/Ubuntu based imo.

Are you using a regular installer from manjaro.org or something weird?

If Manjaro shows that error try Mint or you know just install Windows 7.

I have a windows 7 install but I mentioned it doesn't play nicely with eGPU, I have to boot with it attached, unplug it and wait until windows boots, then plug it back in. (which is annoying when you don't have a display hooked up to the laptop's GPU (so I only see display output if I plug it in to the laptop or if the driver initializes for the eGPU)

Deepin OS is based on Ubuntu, but I was suggesting Manjaro with the Deepin DE.

oh, ok. disabling the overclock is a complicated process but I can try some other stuff to get Manjaro working again later, I might try and see if there is a way to get Windows 7 to boot while leaving the eGPU connected as well.

why no dark mode?

Yeah, I agree the volume shit is annoying. And they really need to stop fucking forcing people to use a microsoft account, the process to create a local account instead is ridiculous, you have to unplug ethernet, then go through the 3 different things saying to use the Microsoft account, then set up 3 REQUIRED security questions. I'm very close to switching back to my windows 7 install but it's problematic with my eGPU.

The snapping on the edge of a monitor actually annoys me becuase I rarely snap things to half a monitor and it ends up just getting the mouse caught on the edge of monitors constantly.

I found a little program called "HideVolumeOSD" that's supposed to auto launch at startup, but doesn't, but once you turn it on it works and hides the stupid volume mixer.

I didn't know that even to make a local account it forced you to set up security questions, that's awesome. At least you should be able to regedit and remove the need for that.

I got used to basically just using each monitor in fullscreen or manually resizing windows in 7. I haven't been using 10 long enough to know if I'll actually care about it. So far it hasn't bothered me, and it only activates when you go slow near edges unlike the invisible walls in the corners.

Right now I'm trying out NV surround with games, which is shit on Win7, but somehow seems to work worse on Win10. I mean, it works fine in games, but otherwise windows freak out  and don't "fullscreen" properly. I think it's also making Galaxy 2.0 do this super cool strobe thing. I'll have to compare that to Win7 and tell GOG before someone has a stroke. It's like 15 seconds of all 3 monitors flashing at 60hz.

Yes, forcing an update that obviously has issues running on the hardware,  what could go wrong!  ;D

I've been using win10 for less than a week and have had multiple app crashes and a BSOD. I have games installed on a secondary HDD and half of them just don't even launch on Win10, so I'd have to redownload them or do something in Steam etc. There's literally no reason to "upgrade" to Win10 other than Win7 is being deprecated. I'm still seriously considering just sticking to Win7 until I maybe eventually upgrade my actual PC and am forced into Win10.

Specs of system? Also, did you perform an Upgrade Install from a previous version (7 or 8.x?) or a fresh install?

Do all of your components have Windows 10 certified drivers?

Does Steam detect these games? Were they copied over from a previous install in a different OS?

There are a lot of back-end improvements, but most of them aren't necessarily obvious (aside from the actual UI change, which is the most obvious difference). The biggest reason to get off of Windows 7 is that as of mid January 2020, you'll stop receiving security patches.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't use an unpatched system on the internet. The risk of getting exploited is just too high (And I can pretty much guarantee that the day after Windows 7 loses support, malware creators are going to be targeting it like crazy - possibly with previously held Zero Day Exploits that they've been holding in anticipation).

If you don't want to use Windows 10 after January, I'd suggest you jump to Linux or Windows 8.1. Windows 8.1 still has support until January 2023. Install Classic Shell, and the experience is near enough Windows 7.

Point being, it's a lot of fiddling around with shit to get it to work, and the only benefit as an end user I get is a slower, harder to use UI. And multi-snapping.
