It does happen, not often, but it does happen.

Even the top units can be a dud every once in awhile.

Indeed and that is the main reason why i consider user reviews.

Professional testing means nothing if the unit you have blows a capacitor and kills your system.

Mistakes happen, errors happen and its something that pro reviewers overlook.

And no i dont just base my purchase off of just one pros reviews or one users review.

I look at RMA's, multiple reviews.

It would be stupid to use one person as a base, bigger picture.

If you buy an expensive PSU, and unfortunately your unit blows up after a month, should you be telling people not to buy that model? Or maybe your experience as a single person's, no matter how well-meant, is not enough to determine whether the product is or isn't prone to early faults?

Well yes if it murdered my system I would be in my right to give warning.

And this is the area where I do consider user reviews, again there is only so much "pros" can do.

So if one person's experience is enough to warn against buying a unit, and every PSU model on earth has at least one person who had it blow up, then... what power supplies are there left to buy?

There's at least one person in the world who had a Corsair AXi blow up on them. Same with Corsair AX, HX, all their other series, all of Seasonic, all of EVGA, all of Thermaltake.

For any power supply model ever made, you can find at least one "X PSU came DOA" or "X PSU blew up" complaint.

And if you say a single complaint is enough not to buy it, than there aren't any PSUs left to buy.

No again i dont just base it off just one user, I consider the percentile of users with and without issues.

RMA rates are also a basis of mine.

Have to remember it's the internet in the end and people parrot more often than not.

So one actual issue can turn into 1,000 with 999 of them being BS.

Then there are the paid shills and trolls on top of that.

Seriously....  Every PSU on the market is put into a burn in chamber for 1 to 2 hours before it's put into a box.  So there should be no such thing as "DOA".  Yet it happens.  That means something happened between that burn in chamber and the customer.  :D

Best to stay with the Professional reviews and ignore user reviews.

It would take a lot to damage a PSU in shipping, especially the high end ones as they are packed extremely well. :D

If there aren't any professional reviews then that model is suspect until there is.

A PSU is always suspect until professional reviews are done.

If a review of the unit itself isn't available, take an educated guess based on the internals, or see how the same unit performs under a different brand.

A rule of thumb is that a PSU is crap until proven otherwise.

Well my old Cooler master silent Pro 600w existed even before the PSU tier list existed... and its still with me today so there is that.

simple idea: look it up what oem it is, most of the times the platform is listed with it, and you can come down on a similar model

it's not perfect, but a good baseline

Doesn't mean anything, other than it still turns on.

I have PSU's that are 20 years old that still turn on, but I wouldn't hook them up to anything today.

Other than its 7 years old and has not shown one sign of defect?

Well at least in my case it was a good buy, but i do wish PSU tier lists were a thing back when i got it.

Congratulations. You have a sample size of one. Also, there are 3 Silent Pro 600W PSUs, which doesn't help either

How do you know?

Has it been hooked up to the correct equipment?

It could be slowly cooking your PC right now and you would never know until it's too late.

It survived two builds, and no its not in a PC right now but i do know it works.

I dont think it cooked anything, sure my first build died but it was no fault of the PSU (bad motherboard)

It ran the first PC since I built it in 2010 to 2015 and the second build for another 2 years.

I only replaced it as I wanted to get another one.

RMA rates are also a basis of mine.

PSU A:
10.000.000 sold units.

1% failure rate -> 100.000 blown units

PSU B: 10.000 units sold

5% failure rate -> 500 Blown units

SO PSU B is better because less PSU overall blew up!

According to you!

Especially if PSU B has better Customer Support than A.

Yeah and it was decent when it came out - 11 Years ago!

It was one of the better units back in 2008 and 9 and got a ton of recommendations.

Not so much today!

By todays standard its a low end System Interator unit that is in performance comparable to the Master Watt Lite or other lowest end things...

So what? What does that tell you?
You were lucky so far.

Should you continue to use the PSU? No, not really...

No the motherboard off my first build was bad, faulty memory slot.

If it was the PSU then it would have killed build 2 by now.... it didnt.
