IBM Made a CPU PCI-E Expansion Card??!?!!

So... just browsing the internet for computer hardware as one does and stumbled upon this.. .monstrosity? Piece of hardware beauty? It's a fucking PCI-E CPU Expansion Card... anyone have more info on this? Possible LTT video??? Here's the link and a screenshot! Yeah I'd really appreciate it if I could get more info on this. In all seriousness, this is really cool hardware.

i haven't looked into it, but it being for an ibm server it's probably proprietary. IBM love proprietary. 

 

i have some old ibm rackmount servers from like 2006, and they have 2 socket's, but you have to buy the second VRM in expansion card form. 

i didn't know that until i found out when it wouldn't boot with dual-cpu's installed. 

 

DAMN YOU IBM.

It only works for certain servers.

You can't take this and plug it into any PC and magically have a second CPU.

This is kinda like xeon phi, where there's a CPU you plug into a PCIe slot and it only works for very specific tasks.

775 was never used for xeons afaik. the xeons of the 775 era used 771. 

 

this server also has M4 in the name. i have an M1 IBM server and that is 771. so this being newer my vote is for 1366 xD

The website says it's for the IBM System X3300, a quick Google search points me to it being now manufactured by Lenovo. So let's take a look at some marketing pictures:

Note the top left label. It's pointing to something in the middle of the motherboard, which looks like this:

So basically the PCIe connector of the daughter board is for PCIe traffic from the CPU of said board, but it's only servicing the "PCIe Slot 1" slot of the mainboard. And the "PCIe Slot 1" will only work if this daughter board is connected as indicated by the first picture.

Although that was more adding CPU compatibility to a single motherboard than adding another CPU. But the physical limitations still apply.

Probably a weird question, but talking about IBM, what does a person even DO on an IBM-based computer nowadays? I'd imagine they're almost exclusively for virtualization and things like that, but I wouldn't even know where to begin lol

 

That being said, it doesn't seem incredibly different to my Dell 7500, but it uses a separate riser board with some weird connector I've never seen before. Pictured here:

It entirely dependeds on if you are talking about Power or Z/system series. The Z series is still extremely popular with financial institutions.

 

I use a dual socket Power9 workstation for work. I'd love to get a old z series to play with but I'd need to reinforce my floor joists for that one lol.
