TBH I also hate how modern smart phones aren't always 16:9. That aspect ratio is a standard for a reason. Even if there is a reason for 18:9 to be a thing, it feels kind of like Apple removing the headphone jack for the sake of "moving forward" when the rest of the world still revolves around its use (but of course, not near as bad). I've gotten used to it though.

how about we not. We should constantly be moving forward in technology and sticking to 16:9 (which is only used on TVs and monitors) is ignoring the mobile user base, which is where i watch 90% of LTT videos on

cropping the video isn't progress. It is regressive.

Its not. Not all phones are 18:9. In fact, most phones aren't https://deviceatlas.com/blog/most-used-smartphone-screen-resolutions#us

Newer phones and flagships have wider than 16:9 aspect ratio.

and? Why should LTT appeal to a few rich people who can't figure out how to zoom in on a video rather than literally everyone else?

16:9 -> 21:9 can be achieved by cropping the top and bottom of the 16:9 picture OR widening the horizontal picture. 2560x1080 (21:9) is literally just a wider 1920x1080 (16:9)

And achieving wider ratios by cropping 8K footage (i assume that's what LTT is doing) is completely fine because neither techlinked nor techquickie need tall ratios. And even then, there are way more situations where a wider shot is more useful than a taller shot

Its not a wider shot, its a cropped shot.

Cameras have circular lenses, completely uncropped video/pictures would be a circle. 18:9 is literally just 16:9, except more of the bottom is cropped out.

So LTT had recently pulled the trigger on 18:9 aspect ratio and Linus said that they are not reverting back to 16:9, with the reason "most viewers are on mobile". Well, I in opinion, although most viewers are on mobile, not everybody have wide aspect ratio screen, and the wide aspect ration on mobile vary from 18:9 to 21:9, so most people will still get ugly top and bottom bars like in 16:9. What I would suggest is switch back to 16:9 aspect ratio BUT have an invisible frame for 18:9 aspect ratio while editing. For example, if you are showing benchmark on a 16:9 video, make sure that the benchmark is 18:9 in the center. In this case, viewers on wide screen mobile devices can make use of the "pinch to zoom" function in Youtube app to remove the blackbars while not having information cut outs and 16:9 viewers can watch a video without black bars.

Or they could just stick with 18:9

my LG V20 is exactly 9:16 (1440 x 2560). so adapting to phones is not that good of a choice imo. Not everyone on mobile gets the benefit either.

I'm curious, do you watch all your DVDs in fullscreen?

Black bars on the top and bottom aren't a problem for a lot of people in this day and age. We've had them for a while on a lot of things, we're kind of used to it by now.

Personally, I'm gonna wait to watch an 18:9 video before passing any kind of judgement.

I just assumed that LTT was using wider aspect ratios because they are the standard in cinema...

1) 2:1 is a good compromise between 16:9 and 21:9 and is a nice simple aspect ratio that more and more devices are switching to because it's not some weird fractional number.

2) if they add black bars then there will be the same problem as there currently is with people rendering 21:9 video at 16:9 and adding black bars. It makes it letterbox on any screen wider than that, for example 21:9 or the youtube theatre mode on a 16:9 screen. It completely looks like shit.

3) even if not all mobile phones right now are 2:1, most in the future will be. It is a much better size than either 21:9 or 16:9 so you need to think about the future, not just right now.

4) MKBHD has been using 2:1 for a long time now and it has worked very well.

5) They are not changing it back, so deal with it.

16:9 is still used on a vast, vast majority of smartphone screens.

you know, we can see what do the manufacturers think of this, by looking into phones released last year:

I could do 2017, but realistically that's where the phone industry is going forward ._.

(also this is a thing Type-C can only dream of, LOL)

Phones released this year =/= phones a majority of people use. And, I get it. Linus has a tech-y audience that wants to use the bleeding edge, so my previous statement is null.

Ultra-tall on phones just makes no god damn sense to me. It adds nothing to the experience.

USB TYPE C IS STUPID THOUGH. IT WEARS OUT WAY TO QUICKLY COMPARED TO MICRO B.

But no...

Camera lenses are circular, but camera sensors are rectangular, so a completely un-cropped shot would still be a rectangle.
