if  there is a security risk caused by the ink cartridge, that risk only exists because HP chips the ink cartridges to prevent people from using third party ink cartridges.
The only supposedly legitimate reason for it is to tell the printer what cartridge is installed and how many pages it's estimated to be able to print before running out of ink, but in my experience that honestly seems to be nothing more than a way to nag customers to buy more ink and prevent the printer from printing even when there's ink left in the cartridge. Printers worked just fine before ink level sensors. I'd happily accept having to reprint a page because ink ran out half way through the page rather than have the printer refuse to print at all because it thinks it's low on cyan.

I really hope that HP loses and the EU forces printer manufacturers to allow third party ink cartridges. I'm surprised it hasn't already happened.

Probably everyone reading this did watch the last WAN show but I just think Luke's take on this is just so good.

What Elon Musk did was basicly yeet the ONLY THING really WORTH of something in Twitter. Like you can buy tech and buildings, patents and all that and they are worth what they are but one thing you cannot just walk into a store even as the world's richest man is brand recognition. There isn't an isle in "Tech mart for crazy rich emerald king sons" where they sell packages of brand recognition that you pay by carat and suddenly people think your brand is worth something. Twitter wasn't in the top 5 brands, but easily within top 500 which is still fracking recognizable and valuable, and Musk just yeeted it in over night because some genius brainfart.

It really sounds like a joke when you think it as Musk just threw probably half of the Twitters value out of the window. Like even Google wasn't that stupid that they would have renamed YouTube to "Google Video" because the brand recognition is that valuable, Google turned Alphabet but still kept the old brands because they are that valuable, Facebook bought Oculus and they used "Oculus by Facebook" for years because people knew Oculus Rift and so using the brand was more valuable than rebranding, while there isn't Nokia as a phone company anymore the brand is that known it is worth to use as sticker brand and it sells, is it already decades different parties have kept the Atari brand in heart-lung machine because it still holds that much value and Musk just yeeted Twitter brand for a brand that a lot of people are directly associating with porn because no one even remembers x.com as PayPal anymore.

Just like Google and "to google" Twitter and "to tweet" have become Deonyms, general terms for the entire category.
"X-ing a post" sounds more like it was deleted than anything else. I doubt this would catch on.

But maybe X-ing Twitter was Musk's plan all along? 🫠

Can you think a more generic name than X? It's like what I would use as a placeholder name until I can muster enough creativity to get a proper name. And for all problems twitter had, the name wasn't one of those. I thought Twitter was a pretty intelligent name for a social media, and the logo was a good fit as well. A little bird that sings little tweets!

Musk paid 44 billion dollars for the thing, and is systematically excising every piece of twitter out of the window. Coincidentally the valuation has gone down. Coincidences?

Is it just me or were the way computers used to be made much easier.  How many people come over and look inside your computer to see all the pretty lights and glass window to look at all the cool components, no one gives a shit.

I feel like guys like Jays2cents caused this extra bs with their special PC builds.

    1. Cases way too heavy, why are we putting glass on them.
    2. Cable management is such a waste of time and makes the computer about 5x more annoying to work on, every cable must be hidden and run through the back, tied off etc.
    3. RGB lighting just causes more hardware issues, maintenance, crashes etc to make the computer look pretty on the inside.
    4. Custom water cooling systems, completely unnecessary and provide 0 real benefits just making a maintenance pain in the ass.
    5. Nvidia GPUs especially are way too power hungry and run way too close to the edge, catching computers on fire, and just a real lack of stability that computers had 10 plus years ago.

thefrecklepuny reacted to Spotty in Scan Computers UK. SHOCKING!!
Call from landline or mobile? What phone provider are you with?

I just looked up Vodafone UK to see what their rates were, and for mobile calls on plan they charge 65p per minute for 084, 087, 09 phone numbers plus the service rate charge (13p per minute). So that would be 78p per minute. Little cheaper on PayAsYouGo with 45p per minute plus service charge. Just took Vodafone as an example, the others are probably fairly similar.

Your issue should be with phone providers and how much they charge, not Scan.co.uk - Though Scan.co.uk should definitely disclose that its a service call number that may have additional charges from your provider.

oh, no, we understand it quite well, we have countless people coming to the forum wanting to do exactly the same thing you want to do, and all of them also didn't put an consideration into it beyond "i want to build and sell computers" exactly like everyone else.

These are some of the considerations that no one thinks about when they just want to "build and sell PCs"

Will you offer a warranty and if so what are the terms? If you sell a PC and the buyer takes it home and it does work, what troubleshooting will you offer? Similar to the above, will you have replacement parts for troubleshooting? How will you eat the cost of replacement components if something turns out to now not be working? Will you offer any post-sales support for people who may not know to much about computers? and while there are many more, you're well within your right to ignore all of the above and sell "as is", but then if that is the case you need to ask yourself; why would someone buy from you compared to a business that they can get all of the above from? what about the thousands of other people who are trying to do the exact same thing as you?

In today's world it's an extremely competitive area and you need to do everything you can to stand out, and unfortunately buying a PC from some kid on FB marketplace or a local classified is going to be the last option someone chooses if they want to buy something, but with that comes an expectation that it is much cheaper than every other option. Which means you're selling with zero margin (and would be highly unlikely to sell) or you're selling at a loss, because at that point you're competing against people just wanting to sell their old computers for a bit of extra money, not to recoup 100% of the cost that they bought it for.

It seems like you want to start a prebuilt company. Start with one computer, use the profits to grow the company and start making and selling more computers.
What warranty will you offer? What sets your computers apart from the many companies that are already doing that?
People here aren't trying to shoot your idea down. That market is highly competitive and works on slim margins for the time involved.

thefrecklepuny reacted to bmx6454 in Want to start selling PCs
there is already tons of prebuilt companies, with more starting every day. for 200$, you can't really build anything of value, maybe you can find some used hardware on the cheap locally, and sell it for more online, make some profit. but building a whole pc from scratch for 200$ isn't really possible.
also worth mentioning, afaik, those prebuilt companies aren't paying retail for the parts, but getting bulk/commercial discounts so they have a better profit margin, you as a consumer won't get those same discounts.

If you haven't seen the image it shows in person, don't buy it.  Even if it's ok, chances are it may fail soon.  New 27" monitors start at about EUR 150 here, so you'd be paying half price for a 12 year old display.

Why is it 12 years old when it was bought in 2014?

If you still want to buy it, it's maybe worth $10--15.  And then you have the hassle of taking it to a recycling place when it failed.

There's a little known secret in regards to electrical devices from major companies, I'm NOT talking about the cheap knock-off crap.
If the item in question is still running 10 minutes after its turned on 95% will run for ages, usually well after the extended plan has expired. In MOST cases if it's bad it's bad right away usually while still under the store's return policy.
The important times to get an extended warranty is
ONE, If you're a business where time is money, you can't afford the downtime so either onsite repair or, even better, immediate replacement is offered.
TWO, your work requires the device and you need replacement, quick exchange or return from a repair. More important if your work requires moderate to heavy travel.
THREE. The device is so cutting edge that even touching the the flat back of the device will cut you.

There are others that can gain benefits, at least peace of mind by knowing that at least someone can help them. How heavy, big, awkward is it. How far do I have to go for repair, how long is the repair going to take, these are some of the other things that you need to think over.

It also depends on the cost of the warranty and most importantly what exactly is covered.

But for the average, reasonably knowledgeable person, NO ,don't waste you're money.

Oh, I used to work retail in an office supply store in their electronics store and always got the lowest bonus for warranty sales, and more than one warned about my under performing, so, yeah, I know.

Another thing to keep in mind is, How long am I going to keep it and how much will it cost me when

Here, doing a little research is helpful as you will be able to get the feedback reported by actual customers.
    Sorry for the diatribe.

I'm going to make this very blunt. Don't do it, it's not worth it.

Running such a business is more than just "i will build PC for you, you give me money".

    Things you need to consider:

how will you deal with warranty claims?
will you have excess inventory so that if someone has a problem with a part you can swap it out for them immediately so they can get their computer back?

    Repairs outside of warranty
similar to the above, are you going to have excess stock of every type of component to be able to troubleshoot and swap out parts to find the problem?

Do you have the liquid funds to purchase all this stuff up front before you start taking on clients?

Where will you keep your inventory?
Are you going to rent out a commercial space? if you're doing it at home, you need to consider the insurance implications of it

    How will you market yourself?
you're going into a field that every boy and his dog is wanting to get into, how will you stand out?

So with all of the above:
why would people come to you?
Remember that there are already very large businesses that do exactly what you are wanting to do who have the resources, the reputation and suppliers. why would anyone come to some random person to build a PC worth potentially a few thousand dollars instead of a place they know will support them and have the resources to fix issues they run into?

You're better off with conventional, reasonably priced tower cases with side windows and pretty RGB fans for the kids to ooh and aah over. Make them look like the cool gamer setups they see their favorite influencers using. Maybe that will lead to less "lol school computer sucks must destroy" temptation. Build them all with the same components, because it's easier to administrate a homogenous fleet.

You might also want to set up a local server for running LAN games and hosting a Steam/Origin/Windows Update/etc cache, with that many machines deployed. (It can also host backup system images so you can nuke and pave the client machines as necessary.) Older rack mount servers are dirt cheap on the used market.

The way I see it, if you're building a new PC or upgrading a current one, you might as well install Windows 11 on it.

Is it perfect? No, it isn't.
Is it good enough and as usable as Windows 10? Yes, it is.

Windows 11 is missing some QoL changes (that I am sure it will get in time), eg. the Task Manager, that is no longer available when right-clicking the Task Bar, or the options when right clicking any file, you have to click to reveal the "additional" options, which is the same window as on Windows 10.

It's not bad, it's just unfinished, but just as good as Windows 10. If you don't need to upgrade (in case of building or upgrading new PC), then hold off for a while longer.
