TheSLSAMG reacted to Mister Woof in How is the ryzen 5 3600 better at productivity then the 10600k, or am I wrong?
3600 design is better in certain instructions, and their implementation of SMT is better than Intel's (Hyperthreading).

But the biggest reason why the 3600 was "better" was it used to be cheaper. That isn't the case any longer.

Actually they do allow that, they do not allow it for Apps based on Apple's developed tracing technology. For those Apps their is a design principal you have to follow to utilize that Apple technology, if you do not use that then you can do whatever you like that is allowed under the regular App Store terms and conditions.

Our NZ tracing App uses none of the Apple or Google tracing technology and started with only QR Code scanning functionality, and it is a legal requirement for all business to have these on display. Proximity based Bluetooth tagging was added much later. Also you can actually use the App without creating an account, providing your name or any other details and the App itself stores all the data on the device itself for 60 days (was 31)

you realize a huge part of Apple's appeal is their respect for the privacy of their users? it would be a huge blow if they simply allow government apps to track location data.

This was my first visit to the Micro center in Duluth Georgia and i was only going to ask questions about my odds of getting a GPU. I got there little bit before 9:00 am as they were giving out vouchers and i was the 3rd person and i think they only had 5. The person giving out the vouchers said they don't get shipments on the weekend but had these just sitting in the back. I needed to give them my ID for the voucher and again when checking out and had to make a account. I was looking for a 3060/TI for my ITX build and this won't fit but getting a new case will be easy

More of a status update than anything else but I was mildly surprised a) this worked and b) that it wasn't that difficult to do.  My server is an MATX board and all the x16 slots are occupied with raid and a gpu so...figuring that at worst I fuck a $70 x540-T2 card:

Dremel set to about 25,000 rpm, with a diamond wheel made really clean and quick work of it.  If anyone ever tries this...wear breathing protection cause glass fibers are bad.

It's only a PCIE2.0 x1 slot so I'm only going to get 500MB/s at most but that's plenty for my application.

Oh I also learned that I have some motherboards with x1 slots that have the back of the slot left open so you can install any length card in them without needing to cut anything.  Unfortunately my server motherboard put a capacitor right next to the x1 slot so that wouldn't work even if I cut the slot open.

TheSLSAMG reacted to LAwLz in China’s Inner Mongolia Declares War on Crypto Mining
I always find cryptocurrency news so entertaining on these forums because there are always a bunch of butthurt, self entitled gamers who are just seething, trying to come up with reasons to hate cryptocurrencies and anyone involved with it.
Crypto currency is the new bogeyman and is responsible for all the problems in the world...

Cryptocurrency are grapes, and there are a lot of foxes on this forum.

By several different measurements, green energy is cheaper than dirtier power like coal and oil.
A lot of green energy, such as solar power, have other issues that are not related to cost though. For example very uneven output (like with solar when power consumption drops to near zero at night), or ruining the environment in other ways (like hydro power plants ruining marine life).

I think the whole "bitcoin is bad for the environment because it uses so much power" is way overblown though. The estimate a lot of news articles use comes from Cambridge university and they currently estimate it to about 130 TWh in a year. That is a lot of power... But the US alone used 4,222 TWh in 2018. China used 7,225TWh alone in 2019.

Power consumption of all cryptomining in the entire world - 130 TWh.
Power consumption of the US and China alone, not counting the rest of the world - 11,447TWh.

The US and China alone uses about 8705% more power than all crypto mining combined.
In other words, if all of the crypto mining in the world was being done in the US and China, then those countries would only see a ~1.14% decrease in power consumption if all crypto mining was shut off overnight.

If you really care about the environment then you should not be mad at bitcoin miners. You should be mad at the far bigger perpetrators. You should be mad at people like Linus who encourages people to consume more and more products they don't actually need (like a new GPU). You should be mad at countries in Asia and Africa because they are the far biggest contributors to plastic pollution.

TheSLSAMG got a reaction from CommanderAlex in Who has issues with G HUB ?
You should be able to use Logitech Gaming Software, I use it with my G513 and G502 and it works fine. I've tried GHUB, and it never worked well for me due to the bugs and not being able to use my on-mouse profile (which causes some weird acceleration issues). Maybe they'll work out the kinks though, and the last time I tried it was a few months ago.

Vortex, the tool for NM has a great feature to clone your current save and test mods. Of course that only protects you against anything immediately visible but I have found it invaluable in getting mods working before applying to my main saves.

I also like that it allows me to have various builds playing variously modded games, so I don’t need to add all mods to all saves. If a mod is just relevant to one then it only gets installed on one save!

I use a few mod sites, sourceforge, NM and a few others. Perfectly safe and used by millions every day.

Both Steam and GoG allow you re-download if you remove it for whatever reason, and GoG even allows you to download an offline installer. I would be wary of any service that required a re-buy. I guess a physical version may have this issue?

The rest is interesting, and very helpful to be mindful of, regardless.

It is quite legit. They even use a side-loader app/launcher now (Vortex) that allows you set priority/order of mods (huge deal for some instances). The premium version is nice, because it removes the download speed limit (1MB) and one-at-a-time-ness, and if you plan on getting very many mods, it might be worth it to pay it for a month.

I have/had quite a few Witcher 3 mods, all from NexusMods.

Can always take a look at number of downloads and time it's been uploaded. That usually tells you that it's a good mod and not something that will brick your PC or be malware. But take the regular precautions you would when downloading anything.

TheSLSAMG reacted to SydneySideSteveSomewheres in Nexusmods Legit?
Check the community (the game's and the NexusMods one) to see if the MODS you are thinking of adding have any conflicts with the Witcher 3 patches. Some MODS are not reversible even if you roll back to a previous save-point. And you may have to install the game again from your back-up. Which brings me to 'back-up' your game before installing any MODS, so you do not have to purchase the game again (worst case scenario).
Fallout has its own community that does bug fixes and they say that they are compatible with some MODS and not others, so perhaps look for a Witcher 3 community that does a similar thing?
    Hope this helps
    Cheers Steve
