Beskamir reacted to Eigenvektor in US lawmaker proposes a public database of all AI training material used by AI models.
Alternative headline:
US lawmaker proposes to backup the Internet
If we assume that the likes of ChatGPT have crawled large parts of the Internet, then that's effectively what would be required. Simply providing links is nonsense, since these will either become stale or the content behind them might change over time.

Beskamir reacted to manikyath in Apple Opens up parts swapping between devices
let me translate that for you:
apple has stopped binding components to devices by serial number, using some false pretense about calibration profiles to avoid facing regulatory backlash for actively blocking any sort of repairability of their devices.
you cannot get legitimate parts to repair apple devices without agreeing to horrendous agreements designed to put repair shops out of business.
on top of that, the stolen phones argument is complete BS here. no one is stealing phones to harvest their battery and display.

Beskamir reacted to Alex Atkin UK in Amazon ends Walkout Technology from its grocery stores
Given how badly self checkouts seem to be working in big retail chains, this seems doomed to fail.
Now I don't know if that video is sensationalised or not, but it seems like a huge problem.
It seems all these technologies designed around having less on-site staff, just result in more remote staff having to monitor an increasing number of cameras to avoid theft. Which completely fails when organised crime gangs decide to attack a store.
These companies seem to have grossly midjudged the value of traditional checkouts in discouraging theft. There were more eyes on the floor to see what you are doing and you cannot exit quickly as leaving was restricted to being hearded like cattle to the checkouts.

Amazon Go with its Walkout technology that was introduced a while back, where customer with an Amazon account can simply walk in, take what they need and walk out has ended. The shopping experience may be convenient as you won't have to wait for the check out line, but it actually
Amazon is going to replace their Walkout technology with what they called Dash Cart, which is a

That's one reason I like my Panasonic DECT home phone system. It connects to both my cell phones with Bluetooth, the handsets just use off-the-shelf NiMh AAAs, and the only way it's connecting to the Internet is via a POTS to SIP gateway.
If it can't connect to Home Assistant and work without an Internet connection, I don't want it.

Beskamir reacted to TetraSky in Apple’s new “Why Upgrade - See What You’re Missing” page
Is this apple admitting the glass back on their phones was a bad idea?
In any case.... I'm looking at that page and only someone completely in the cult of apple would think these talking points are any good arguments in favor of an upgrade.
"You get free, temporary iCloud storage to transfer your data to your new iPhone. "
Oh boy, how generous to let people temporarily have higher storage capacity for free when they need to transfer data on their new phone.

Beskamir reacted to creat0r in Apple’s new “Why Upgrade - See What You’re Missing” page
Summary
Apple has created a page on their websites where the user enters their current iPhone model and gets a list of reasons to upgrade to the 15-series. Interestingly, currently only the 11- or 12-series are selectable. The user then picks one of four iPhone 15-series models, and the list is generated with reasons to upgrade. It’s similar to the older “Compare” feature, but this new page only shows the differences.

My thoughts
Honestly I feel like Apple is getting a bit desperate to get users to buy new products, the title screams of desperation of wanting to give users FOMO. I’m a big tech nerd who usually wants the best, but my iPhone 12 Pro Max from 2020 is still serving me great. I know a lot of users are feeling the same way (maybe not on this forum though): that their smartphone is good enough - so why upgrade? If Apple made product that was innovative and revolutionary for real, then they wouldn’t need a list with all the subtle differences for the average user. My conspiracy theory is that the old “Compare” tool showed how much each “new” generation had in common with the previous generations, and that’s why they want to hide it and only display the differences. Also, wanting to give users FOMO by using their devices that are just a few years old is VERY hypocritical considering all their environmental focus.

Good. Delay it.

They just gave up without a fight...
Because Nintendo 100% would've dragged this on, costing them way too much in legal fees.
I went ahead and saved the latest version of Yuzu when this whole thing started. Considering it's open source, though.... Cut one head and 10 more will spawn from it. They will just be more careful about it.

Beskamir got a reaction from LAwLz in Disney Invests 1.5 Billion in Epic Games to create Disney branded titles
My concern with this is what the shareholder percentages are now. Tencent's got like 40% last I checked, Tim has 51%, and the rest is divided up among a bunch of other investors. 1.5 billion is a sizable percent of the 22 billion so I'm most curious who gave up their shares or if new ones were created or if investors in Epic Games have no influence over the company's direction.
Basically as long as Tim has more than 50% ownership I'm not too concerned about Epic Games becoming terribly awful. He seems like a fairly sensible person with reasonable and not overly exploitive business practices. Obviously it's difficult thriving in business without being sociopath so I wouldn't argue he's completely perfect, but it is rather nice that he's using his fortune to buy up forests in order to preserve them.
Either way, as much as I despise Disney, I prefer them to Tencent so if Tencent's grasp on Epic Games decreases because of this that will only be a positive imo.

Beskamir reacted to manikyath in Sam Altman seeking 5-7 TRILLION in backing for Open AI CPU Creation
i'd love to have 7 trillion as well.
i think this man has been around big numbers he forgot their meaning..
SpaceX quoted their first generation of falcon 9 rockets to have cost 300 million to develop
NASA quoted that if they had developed such a platform using their own strategies, it would have been in the 3.6 billion category
SpaceX estimates that starship will cost between 5-10 billion to develop
nvidia spends 7.34 billion on R&D each year
so.. what this man is suggesting, is that his endavour will cost the same as:
- nvidia funding their R&D for the coming 950 years
- spacex developing starship, estimating they double their original budget at 20billion
- NASA copying SpaceX's homework and making a falcon bureaucracy edition.
- still have enough money left over for spaceX to throw away and re-invent falcon 9 not once, not twice, but 11 times.
please.. someone quote me to tell me that the order of magnitude got lost in translation somewhere...

Hot take the Internet shouldn't be forever. If someone wants their personal information gone from the web even if it's an important figure they should be allowed a full data purge.
