All Gigaset smart home devices from April will become e-waste due to insolvency

Summary

The cloud services of the smart home/care products of the faltering DECT phone specialist Gigaset must be discontinued as of March 29, 2024. The company made this known in a brief announcement.

The cloud services of the Smart Home/Care products must therefore be discontinued as of March 29, 2024. Maintenance is not possible under insolvency law. As a result, the apps for the Smart Home/Care products and the networked sensors and devices will no longer be usable.

My thoughts

I think this is a good illustration of the consequences of all smart home devices being forced to use the cloud, even though it wouldn't be technically necessary. News about this has so far only been published in Germany and I haven't seen much on the subject in the English-language news in particular, but I think it's definitely worth discussing.

i mean sure, company that made outdated products failed to transition into a more modern market than what was the 1990 standard, why?

indeed an interesting question but do we know the answer?

That's one reason I like my Panasonic DECT home phone system. It connects to both my cell phones with Bluetooth, the handsets just use off-the-shelf NiMh AAAs, and the only way it's connecting to the Internet is via a POTS to SIP gateway.

If it can't connect to Home Assistant and work without an Internet connection, I don't want it.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Or at least allow bluetooth only mode. So many things would be fine with just BT remote control yet require WiFi and account for some reason.

This is why I will only buy cheap smart bulbs. I don't trust any eco system to not eventually go away

I'm usually as lost as you are

Gigafail.

The only automation I use is a LDR for the outdoors floodlights, why overcomplicate it?
