Broadband Battle - 2Gbps plan offered by two companies in ISPs in Singapore

Singapore now has 2 ISPs offering 2Gbps plans, namely ViewQuest and MyRepbulic, the latter releasing it during the Comex IT show yesterday.

Yesterday, ISP MyRepublic unveiled its 2Gbps plan for homes for the first time, at $59.99 a month, at the Comex IT and consumer technology exhibition. Rival ViewQwest, which launched a 2Gbps plan for home users in March, has now slashed the price of this plan from $89.95 to $65 a month. All these prices are for 24-month contracts.

 

 

2Gbps plans start from only 59.99 SGD a month. For all you people on this fourm, that equates to ~42USD per month, for a 2Gbps plan!

 

 

This has also caused them to cut the prices for their 1Gbps plan, down to starting at 34.99 per month for the first 12 months offered by MyRepublic.

Besides the 2Gbps offers, consumers stand to get good deals for 1Gbps services.

MyRepublic and ViewQwest have reduced the prices of such plans, with MyRepublic's plan now going for $34.99 a month for the first 12 months, and $49.99 for the next 12 months. It used to cost $49.99 a month for 24 months. ViewQwest lowered its 1Gbps plan from $65 a month to $50. StarHub, Singtel and M1 have 1Gbps plans priced from $39 to $50 a month.

 

 

Personally, I am still running off a 100Mbps plan as my house does not have fibre installed. I know of friends who are hitting 900Mbps on their 1Gbps plan.

This may be cause for concern for other countries who have much slower internet speeds, as I have seen some people posting speeds such as 30down and 5 up for a ludicrous amount of money. Even Linus's office only has 200Mbps, and I cannot imagine how much they are paying for it.

Straight up, even if that was available everywhere. Most computers wouldn't be able to actually utilise it unless they had high capacity SSD that also had sustaind writes of around 256MB/sec.

1Gb/s  is around 125MB/s which most harddrives can handle

2Gb/s needs a SSD though but any will do just fine

I'd actually had done the calculations, however I obviously forgot to type in the result.

Meanwhile I'm just happy that I got upgraded to 60^/20v (from 20^/10v).

 

Edit: second thought, I would have pissed with this news if I was still on my old ISP. 1000 and 2000 times faster for $30 less is bullshit.

well, the last time I remember they already offering 10/4 mbps when my internet is still 128kbps, that was back in 2004.

Normal nic's are 1GB/s and the next up is usually pro gear, at 10Gb/s. 

 

So are you wasting a whole 1GB/s or am I just plain wrong?

Due to distance a signal might drop in speed, causing a 1GB/s signal to come in with a 10-20% drop in worst case scenario.

So sending a higher speed they can ensure that clients get the most out of their hardware(assuming its limited to 1GB/s) and aren't limited by signal loss over distance.

so? what's the purpose when 1gbps networking being introduced? no one will use it because most hardware still on 100mbps nic?

at least they have option to utilize it, sure they might spend extra to fully use that bandwith, getting 10gbs nic/switch might expensive, but if the services is working as intended consider it well spent.

Oh hey, I'm all for faster internet, don't get me wrong, but I'd love if we could get some 2GB/s nic's so we don't need to buy the expensive 10Gb/s stuff.

I didnt read much because i wanted to say that, I hope companies and everyone realize that 1-2gbps up/down for each individual household sustained speed is impossible for our current infrastructures.

If they arent investing heavily in fiber infrastructure these speeds are just for show, and probably only going to reach those speed in tests and occasionally.If everyone could use their connection at a constant 1gbps probably everyone's speed would drop severely.

Plus its useless to have a 2gbps connection since except stuff like steam,youtube and p2p torrent(mostly piracy) nothing will ever reach those speeds.Most websites are very limited and still barely provide <50mbps download speeds.

By fibre you mean 1Gbps connection or "fibre optic cable" ???

Because I'm sure there isn't ADSL or any other than satellite connection to get over 20Mbps connection.

Why can't we focus on getting everyone a constent value like everyone everywhere gets 40 down and 20 up rather then someone getting extreme speeds and I am stuck with dial up in my area

Yeah I don't exactly understand why companies are trying to up their already extreme service even higher when there's places with service caliber that can't even touch it.

it depends on how hard the govt pushes for the fiber infrastructure to roll out and whether there is competition in the market to force isps to up speeds.

if collusion is present you end up with slow speeds everywhere.

the fiber infrastructure in singapore is pretty extensive and almost every household has fiber or is able to get fiber

I have 1Gbps connection, up and down, and 10Gbps is available here in Provo, if you can pay out for the networking hardware to take advantage of it.

 

We are getting insane speeds because of Google Fiber. Google came in and took 90% of the market share, to which all the local companies rolled out their own fiber solutions. I have veracity, which I have found is much more reliable then Google Fiber. Then there are one or two companies teasing a 100Gbps connection sometime in the near future, but I have no information about it other then seeing ads on the interstate.
