Reddit CEO admits, 'We screwed up'

Reddit CEO Ellen Pao has posted an apology to users and moderators following the blackout the site experienced when moderators revolted against a recent staffing decision.

Moderators had switched subreddits to private in protest after news broke a few days ago that Reddit's director of talent Victoria Taylor had been let go. The moderators' actions effectively left the front page of Reddit blank and users were unable to read posts.

While Reddit doesn't need to announce why or when it lets go of staff, moderators, who worked closely with Taylor, felt they should have been told about the staffing decision and at least how Taylor's workload would be handled.

"We all had the rug ripped out from under us and feel betrayed," a moderator posted about the situation.

 

 

In her post this morning, Pao admitted a pattern of mistakes.

"We screwed up," she wrote. "Not just on July 2, but also over the past several years."

"We haven't communicated well, and we have surprised moderators and the community with big changes," she continued.

Pao also acknowledged that moderators and users had lost trust in Reddit's administration, but says that Reddit will now work on improvements for tools, communication and search for moderators.

"I know these are just words, and it may be hard for you to believe us ... I mean it when I say we screwed up, and we want to have a meaningful ongoing discussion," she said.

She invited feedback on the post from both moderators and users, and says the Reddit team is ready to respond to questions or concerns.

Reddit used to be a good thing a few years back, but people found ways to make the overall quality go down significantly (fatpeoplehate, anyone?) and measures were taken far too late

Screw Ellen Pao, she needs to accept the change.org position and step down before the board decides she's not doing well as CEO and she is limiting what Reddit can be.

I'm switching over to Voat for a week to see how I like it. Reddit has been going downhill lately and now that some mods are leaving as well, then more will follow suite until Pao has her own personal mod team on the major subreddits.

 

Even if I don't like Voat after a week, I'll probably stop using Reddit as a whole and find a news community or something more community driven than corporate.

 

Goodbye Reddit, it's been fun these past 3 years.

Apart from some of the subreddits, I think the uber-left authoritarian bullshit is the worst part of the community. You say anything they don't like and you're downvoted to hell. Even if what you say is perfectly reasonable, if it offends them, they'll do their best to make sure what you said is never seen. Facts? Pfft, if they don't like it, you're fucked. Basically, if you don't support the gay/trans/PC culture/atheist/feminist agenda, you're not one of them and they'll treat you as such.

that's completely illegal. You can't fire someone for being sick. At least not to my knowledge.

She tried to sue Kleiner Perkins for sexual harassment. The lawsuit included things like her claiming she didn't get promoted because she was a woman, and her being given "Book of Longing" (a poetry book by Leonard Cohen) as a gift, because some poems and drawings in it had sexual undertones. She lost the case with a resounding no.

I have no idea how anyone could willingly employ her after that. Suing and losing against your previous job for seemingly unjustified reasons would be a huge red flag for me as an employer.

Actually here in Mexico, since we have universal health care, if you get a permanent disability your employer basically terminates your employment since you're not going back and you're then under a medical pension directly from social security.

 

Not sure how that situation work on the states but I believe it might be ok under those extremely narrow and unlikely circumstances.

Well, he wanted to go back to work, and his doctor hadn't said whether or not it was okay for him to do so, so....yeah.

 

I mean, they gave him a year of health care coverage but still. Read that link I gave, and scroll down to her complaints. She filed a discrimination lawsuit, including complaints like

 

"Here, many of the alleged discriminatory acts involve such minutiae as Pao not sitting in the front row at a meeting, Pao not sitting at the table during an event, Pao's office not being in "the power corridor" (whatever that means), Pao not being included on an applicant's interview schedule, Pao being asked to take notes during a meeting - among many, many others."

She's a completely self serving and self interested bitch. All of her performance reviews essentially said the same thing, although in a more polite manner. How the people in charge of Reddit could ever make someone like her a CEO is beyond me. If you read the full thing, she's a completely 100% toxic person to any company.

Read some of the brief. She cares more about herself than anything else it seems. Even her performance reviews stated "seems to care more about her own advancement than the company. I do not trust her motivations" etc.
