Intel To Rebrand The Atom

Opcode

Source

New Atom chips will have the X3, X5 and X7 designations, much like with the Core i3, i5 and i7 brands. An Atom X3 will deliver good performance, X5 will be better and X7 will be the best, an Intel spokeswoman said.

The new names will give buyers a quick sense of the level of technology that they’re getting in mobile devices. For example, faster X7 chips for high-end tablets may have better graphics and more wireless connectivity options than X5 chips. (Of course, devices with more advanced chips tend to carry higher prices.)

I guess this is good for your average consumer as Z3770D and Z3735F might get a little confusing.

At least it will help the illiterates better understand what offers better performance and/or more features.

Best performance in terms of what? Computational power, or energy efficiency? TDP? The comparative metrics in a device that uses an Atom style CPU are drastically different from those of a desktop PC, or even an average laptop.

I don't mind this, hopefully BMW don't get a stick up their asses though.

Considering BMW's appropriation of i3, i5 and i7 I don't think they're in a position to judge.

What are the Atom CPU's for again?

Like modern tablet or something? I can't remember.. I'm not good at this stuff..

Atom is low power for cell phones, tablets and small netbooks.

Should've made these the A3, A5, A7 and the Xeons X3, X5, X7

Too "AMD'ish" probably for Intel. If you're looking at Xeon chips you likely already understand hardware. Tho if you're an average Joe in WalMart looking at tablets...

I'd have prefered something like A instead of X (as x for Intel is usually extreme), but AMD kind of beat them to it.

either way better than Z3735 like you say :)

Atom = Boring

Avoton = Interesting

More news on the latter would be nice.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

I think Atom fits quite nicely.

"An atom is the smallest unit of matter."

In which the Atom is Intel's smallest x86 core.

No I recognize that, just saying, these atom mobile chips aren't as interesting as the SoC server boards derived from Atom (which are called Avoton)

Intel Atom was an alright name to be honest.

but the new naming scheme makes it easier to figure out the best chip

You're one of the very few who don't. I personally can't wait to get my hands on a 2 in 1 that runs a full version of Windows 8.1.

Intel Atom was an alright name to be honest.

It will still be called the Atom. It just wont be "Atom Z3770D" but something along the lines of "Atom X5-370D".

Xeons are already E3, E5 and E7. E3 is for workstations, E5 is for servers and E7 is for multi-CPU servers. The high-end E7 is actually lesss powerful than an E5, but the E7 supports up to 8 CPUs IIRC.

Yeah. Years ago they were reserved for cheap netbooks and they were pieces of shit. (I had one. The Atom in it had a 2.5w TDP and couldn't even run a 64 bit OS. Slow as fuck. Overclockable though.)
