New Lithium Battery in the works to double cell phone battery life

The lithium ion batteries in your mobile devices are inherently limited by the "ion" part of their name; they can safely use lithium only in the part of the cell that supplies ions, wasting a lot of potential energy. It's good news, then, that researchers at Stanford have developed a new lithium battery that could last for much, much longer. The technique allows for denser, more efficient lithium in the battery's anode (which discharges electrons) by using a nanoscopic carbon shield that keeps the unstable chemical in check -- uncontrolled, it can quickly shorten the device's lifespan.

The result is a power pack that lasts considerably longer on charge, won't decay quickly and remains relatively safe. Stanford's Steven Chu (the former US Secretary of Energy) reckons that a cellphone equipped with these advanced lithium cells could have two to three times the battery life, and automakers could build cheap electric cars that still offer a healthy driving range. There's more engineering work required before you see any shipping products, but it's entirely possible that future portable gadgets will run for more than a day on a charge without resorting to giant battery packs.

 

I think that it is great that new battery technology is being developed to increase battery life. I remember last year when I had my non-smart phone it lasted a week before needing to be charged and went down to 3 -4 days after few years of use. I once I got my s3 this year I was really surprised on how often I needed to charge it. At most it would last 1 and quarter of a day before needing to be charged. Having a battery that would last at least 3 days before needing to be charged would be awesome. I wish that major cell phone makers would invest more in cell phone battery technology that would be great selling point for their phones IMO.

Any news that has to do with better batteries is great news. I would love to go back to how old phones where where you could go for weeks on a single charge

Finally. This is the tech we need. We don't need ultra HD screens when the battery only lasts a couple hours. Lets just hope these things don't explode as much as current batteries...

I don't really understand why battery life isn't a priority... I mean that's a very strong selling point to say Phone X has double the battery of an iPhone/One/S5 etc etc

And I was just about to make my phone gas powered. 

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

This is nothing compared to the graphene capacitor batteries I saw the other day (if it's legit, of course). The end of everything not graphene powered is near.

i say to these battery makers, that they should find a partner such as samsung, LG, HTC or any other big cell phone maker and try to get them to add it to their next cellphone. All they need to do to make their battery a new standard is by getting the hype train rolling and then soon after that other companies will start hoping on or developing their own equivalent.

I wouldn't even mind getting 2 day's use out of a phone. Just as long as I can be sure that I can use my phone as much as I want in a single day without having to worry about power saving modes, and whether or not it will not make it through one day.
