How am I suppose to know that I'm suppose to attach that cable?

I just found out that on my Asus Zenith Extreme I'm suppose to hook up a molex connector located on the bottom edge of the mother board when running many pcie cards.  Note I am running 4 gpus cause this is a deep learning development rig.  Going back through the manual for the millionth time I see nothing stating that I'm suppose to hook this up.

How am I suppose to know that I'm suppose to use the additional power connecter when using many pcie cards?

Searching the internets is how I found I was suppose to use this additional power connector.  How did the folks posting know that connector needs to be used?

For those that are to ignorant to read... OP read through the manual multiple times and it does not state in there about it. I just looked through the manual as well and there is no mention I could see of it...

this is supposed to be common knowledge. PCIe can draw 75Watts per slot, which is a hell of a lot when combined with the CPU.

this is old tech too, not something new for this gen. i have X79 boards with molex for the PCIe

I didn't read the manual, but I managed to plug it in. It also does mention it in the manual on page 1-21  "Find the proper orientation and push down firmly until the connectors completely fit" and then proceed to point out the 4 connection points, where D is the EZ_PLUG molex.

I guess Asus have their asses covered in this one. Having said that, I was under the impression that the molex connection was optional and that the system would work anyway.

From reading the manual, I found the information you are looking for is on page 1-21.  Sry, I would have posted the information but it wouldn't let me cut/paste from a .pdf document.

It's generally a good idea to just plug in everything you can, particularly when it comes to power.  Setting up a PC is pretty easy these days if you follow only that rule.  That said it definitely should be in the manual, that seems like a significant oversight if they missed it.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Well it's an interesting range of responses...

1. Reading the manual led to this sort of confusion.  Oh look yes page 1-21 does enumerate the different power connectors.  Similarly so does page 1-20 enumerate all the different fan pump connections.  Am I suppose to just connect all of those as well?

2. Page 2-7 talks about connecting the power to the motherboard.  No reference to the molex connector.

So from what I've gathered it would appear that this is just something that is known which is a deeply unsatisfying answer given that I'm trying to figure out how folks know about this.

Well it turns out that the manual is not the panacea of information I thought it would be.  Meh live and learn.

Since you are running for GPUs, I would connect the extra 4-pin Molex. More so if the GPUs have high power requirements.

When you run one or two GPUs, it is typically not required. Three or four? Heavily overclocking the GPUs? That is a different story.

The 24-pin connector can only provide so much power to the motherboard expansion slots. The extra molex is to ensure the 24-pin does not run out-of-spec.

My Crosshair IV and V Formula, and my X99 Deluxe II I believe, all had an extra molex connection on the motherboard. I don't think my Maximus VII Hero does -- make sense since it only supports dual GPUs.
