build quality is the #1 thing you get with a Mac my 2012 is still nicer than a lot of new laptops in its price range used Macs make the best PCs.

 

to someone who has endless tinkering time a civic is like a 911 if you dump a hell of alot of money you wont ever get back into it just like a pc its a great analogy the new civic has just as few bolt ons as a new 911 and the old 911 with the same amount in parts will continue to dominate the civic as long as the person turning the wrenches knows how to get more out of it just like a Mac the old Macs are cheaper and better built than the new pcs its aluminum vs plastic just like muscle car people think civics are lawn mowers and euro guys think every one else is Neanderthals.

spoken like someone who has no idea what they are talking about and thats the problem with apple derangement syndrome you hate apples whole line up to without proof or a clue about it I bet you haven't even used a Mac for more than 5 minutes if you did you wouldn't be making blanket statements. 

 

my MacBook has 16 GB of DDR3 1600 and dual 480gb ssds in it and only cost me $700 all in with 2 chargers and the parts to upgrade it from a 500Gb HDD and 4 GB of ram and a new keyboard and back lite to make it feel brand new.  it comes apart with 4 screw drivers easier than most pcs and a battery swap takes 5 minutes and is held in with 3 screws. 

 

get off the band wagon and use what works best for the best price I can run any OS easy you can't.

A Porsche 911 is like a macbook, you have it for the status if you don't need it as a performance machine, and like a 911 you can't tinker with it yourself.

I'd rather have the much more reliable Honda that isn't an overpriced fashion symbol, which I can also tinker on, repair and upgrade myself.

Well you're just accusing someone of hating on Apple, when Drak3 gave about every reason why Apple really isn't that premium anymore aside from how it is perceived to be premium because of the nice looking aluminum and OS.  The build quality isn't what it used to be like how it was with the older Macbook models. Apple doesn't really care about the enthusiast customer anymore, you can't take a screwdriver to your macbook without voiding the warranty,and once you open a current Macbook there isn't anything to upgrade either.

just because you can't work on a 911 doesn't mean I can't just like a MacBook the level of the person working on it is one of the choices here just like a car if you can read a manual and get the parts you can fix any car or MacBook look at rossmann go he built a business on working on apple products.i am one of them tinkerers literally I have a optiplex im trying to mod a 1080ti mini into with a aftermarket sfx PSU it will work with enough tinkering its time and skills that make it work.

but this dosen't take away from their achievements that they added to. today with the A12 bionic chip why they wont need intel in 2 years. also what new ultra thin and light computer isn't a cooling disaster and can you open and upgrade anything anymore? how man of them give you 4 thunderbolt ports? I agree they are way to much money and they use poor choices in hardware in some cases like the i9 and the soldering on of everything in the new one but its the Starbucks thin and light computer jerk offs who care about bezel size and how many oz they can shave off.

You realize that the stock EFI can only support OSX and Windows, right? Even then, Windows is only supported when running Bootcamp. To run Linux or any other Unix distrobution (even Darwin, which is the base of OSX), requires either running a hypervisor or modifying the EFI.

Also, the i7-3615QM is a good 30% slower or so than the 7700HQ, the 650M SLI config available then is maginally better than the Radeon Pro 555. You're also limited to 1600MHz DDR3, which isn't doing you any favors in RAM heavy tasks compared to DDR4-2133.

It's also only rated for 7 hours, which I can get whilst doing some moderate gaming on my MacBook Pro.

Apple products have NEVER been meant for those rough on their products. Only reasons there are so many old MacBooks on the markets are:

1. Apple only offers a small handful of laptops and are the only ones selling OSX
   1. OSX makes up somewhere between 15 and 20% of hardware marketshare.
2. MacBooks have largely been used in situations that aren't hazardous to the laptop

And the only reason they hold their value is the misconception that they're somehow higher quality, when they aren't.

The reason many people buy from apple is because, while their products may be overpriced, and very bad (in terms of gaming, and performance), they last a looong time, they are built to last with quality parts. Again, I no longer use apple products personally, but in my experience with owning a Macbook from 2012, it still works today!

the difference between 1600 and 2133 has been tested to death and outside of real science applications its negligible and 30% of a 4 core 8 thread cpu as a difference while compensating for thermals I might make that realy close with the old thick body mac and the lower spec GPU when the thermal throttling starts the Geekbench is something I would bet on its close enough.

my battery with 500 cycles on it get me 5-6 hours with a ivy bridge i5 in this MacBook with the brightness up.

 

the old Macs are better quality you haven't said anything about your vast experience as a vintage Mac tester so I can't take your word on it but my research has shown the fails and triumphs that have pushed the industry as a whole even when apple fails people learn things and other products improve.

The difference between 1600 and 2133 is pretty big when doing anything with AVX (H.264 and HEVC encoding, which is something commonly done with Final Cut, which is exclusive to OSX), and there are improvements in frame times with gaming.

You won't. That 30% is base clock vs base clock, best processor available to your MacBook generation vs the worst available to mine. You're not going to be hitting your turbo clock any more than I am. That 30% is real world performance.

So, I've been comparing to the BEST 2012 MBP, when you're using a piece of crap running a 3210M.

In that case, my MBP is 37% faster at single core, 175% faster at multicore.

Hell, my then $800 Acer Laptop outpaces your then $1200 MBP, as it runs a 3230M.
