Dell S2340L does not give display with MacBooks

Hi,

I have been trying multiple things but I cannot get the macbook to output to my dell s2340l 23 inch monitor (2013 model). i understand this is an old monitor but it is in pristine condition.

Here are the things i have tried so far

Connecting the monitor via the HDMI cable to my desktop PC/windows laptop - gives display

Connecting the monitor via VGA to my desktop PC/windows laptop - gives display

Connecting the monitor via the VGA cable to my desktop PC/windows laptop with a VGA to HDMI adapter - gives display

As soon as I change the system from desktop/laptop to a Mac, it does not give any display. It detects the display in some combinations, but never outputs anything on the screen. I have tried this with dell WD15 dock station as well and the mac just wont give the display to the monitor. The windows laptop works with the dock station as well.

Is it something to do with the old monitor? any technology which is not complaint with apple computers? i plan on updating the monitor to a cheap 100 dollar brand new samsung 24 inch monitor in the worst case.
