  • Steam has released the Beta of a new and improved version of Steam Play to all Linux users!

  • It includes a modified distribution of Wine, called Proton, to provide compatibility with Windows game titles. Here are some of the improvements it brings to the table:

    • Windows games with no Linux version currently available can now be installed and run directly from the Linux Steam client, complete with native Steamworks and OpenVR support.

    • DirectX 11 and 12 implementations are now based on Vulkan, resulting in improved game compatibility and reduced performance impact.

    • Fullscreen support has been improved: fullscreen games will be seamlessly stretched to the desired display without interfering with the native monitor resolution or requiring the use of a virtual desktop.

    • Improved game controller support: games will automatically recognize all controllers supported by Steam. Expect more out-of-the-box controller compatibility than even the original version of the game.

    • Performance for multi-threaded games has been greatly improved compared to vanilla Wine.

  • The initial set of supported games with this initial Beta release is:

    • Beat Saber

    • Bejeweled 2 Deluxe

    • Doki Doki Literature Club!

    • DOOM

    • DOOM II: Hell on Earth

    • DOOM VFR

    • Fallout Shelter

    • FATE

    • FINAL FANTASY VI

    • Geometry Dash

    • Google Earth VR

    • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

    • Star Wars: Battlefront 2

    • Tekken 7

    • Tropico 4

    • Ultimate Doom

    • Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Dark Crusade

    • Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Soulstorm

  • Users are also able to try playing non-whitelisted games using an override switch in the Steam client.

    • Going forward, users can vote for their favorite games to be considered for Steam Play using platform wishlisting.

  • Proton contains a custom version of Wine as well as additional libraries developed alongside it. It's fully open-source and available right now on GitHub

Who should Linus fight on Pay per View?

Source 1: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-08-24/youtube-stars-look-to-parlay-fame-into-pay-per-view-boxing-match

Source 2: https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-45271254

  • Logan Paul is facing off against KSI in a live boxing match this saturday at Manchester Arena.

    • "the biggest event in internet history"

  • The fighters:

    • KSI (19m subs) is the brash 25-year-old British gamer, comedy vlogger and rapper whose videos have racked up 4.4 billion views despite heavy criticism for lewd comments towards women in some of his clips.

    • Logan Paul -18m subs- is the 23-year-old US prankster (and former state wrestler) who made his name on Vine before moving to YouTube, where he's had 3.9 billion views, and who caused outrage earlier this year for showing the body of an apparent suicide victim in Japan.

      • Their brothers Jake Paul and Deji will fight on the undercard.

  • Both have cultivated a frenzied online feud in order to hype up this bout, which will be streamed pay-per-view on YouTube.

    • Promoters expect the event to generate an online audience of at least 1 million.

    • The pay-per-view passes will cost 7.50 pounds in the U.K. -- or $10 in the U.S

      • The entertainers and their companies will take the bulk of the proceeds and YouTube will get a cut, too.

Australia bans Huawei + ZTE from providing 5G

Source 1: Spotty https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/963731-chinese-companies-huawei-and-zte-banned-from-5g-infrastructure-in-australia-due-to-security-concerns/

Source 2: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-23/huawei-banned-from-providing-5g-mobile-technology-australia/10155438

  • The Australian Federal Government has banned vendors that can not adequately protect the network from interference from taking part in the rollout of 5G mobile infrastructure

    • They didn’t name names in their announcement, but Chinese-owned tech giant Huawei confirmed on Twitter that it had been banned.

  • The Government said it would be interpreting rules announced last year as disqualifying any company that was "likely subject to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government that conflict with Australian law".

    • the Telecommunications Sector Security Reforms (TSSR) come into effect on September 18, and include a security obligation requiring vendors to protect their networks against threats to national security.

    • Chinese law requires organisations and citizens to support, assist, and cooperate with intelligence work, which analysts say can make Huawei's equipment a conduit for espionage.

  • In Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said China expressed "serious concern"

    • "We urge the Australian Government to abandon ideological prejudices and provide a fair competitive environment for Chinese companies' operations in Australia,"

Blackhat 2018 Attendees Info Leaked

Source 1: rcmaehl https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/963334-the-definition-of-irony-blackhat-2018-attendee-info-leaked/

Source 2: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/legacy-system-exposes-contact-info-of-blackhat-2018-attendees/?ref=rcmaehl

  • Full contact information of everyone attending the BlackHat security conference this year has been exposed in clear text.

  • The data trove includes name, email, company, and phone number.

  • The attendee list was hacked by… one of the blackhat attendees lol

    • NinjaStyle noticed that scanning his conference badge with an NFC chip reader allowed him to see his real full name in clear text.

      • However, his email address and other information were not available this way.

    • NinjaStyle started prodding the recommended card reader (BCard app) and decompiled its APK in search for potential API endpoints.

    • He was able to pull hist attendee data completely unauthenticated over this API

    • He then used trial and error to discover the range for the valid ID data and used brute force to extracting everyone’s details.

  • NinjaStyle was able to contact the BCard maker to disclose the security flaw, which was fixed in less than 24 hours by disabling the leaky API because it was a legacy system.

  • Google has launched a new feature for Google Assistant that’s designed to cheer people up by filtering negative news.

    • Simply ask your phone (or Google Home) to ‘tell me something good’ and you’ll be given a nice summary of positive stories about people solving real problems.

  • And it’s not news about unlikely animal friendships or random acts of kindness, but stories about people solving real problems.

    • The stories come from a wide range of media outlets, curated and summarised by the nonpartisan, nonprofit Solutions Journalism Network organisation.

    • Hunter listed the $1,302 of Steam Games expenses on his campaign finance disclosure for 2015 year-end, with the notation “personal expense — to be paid back.”

    • no payback is listed during the time period of the report

  • Hunter’s spokesman said the congressman’s teenage son used his father’s credit card for one game, and then several unauthorized charges resulted after the father tried to close access to the website.

  • According to the House Ethics Committee website,

    • “Campaign funds are to be used for bona fide campaign or political purposes only. Campaign funds are not to be used to enhance a member’s lifestyle, or to pay a member’s personal obligations... Members have no discretion whatsoever to convert campaign funds to personal use.”

  • This is the same guy who recently made news vaping in the House of Representatives

  • Now, Microsoft announced after October 31, new applications will no longer be accepted for distribution through the store.

  • Updates to existing applications will continue to be supported but only until July 1, 2023

    • The deadline for Windows Phone 8 is sooner: updates for those apps will end on July 1, 2019.

I'm missing this: https://www.techpowerup.com/247028/intel-gags-customers-from-publishing-performance-impact-of-microcode-updates

i9-9900K

  • 833€
  • probably still vulnerable to Spectre and Meltdown
  • publishing confirming test results = breaking Intel ToS

I know they back down on that decision like 24h later (source), but still pretty $H!T -ty thing to do and should be discussed.

Maybe because using it only for wan show which casts at night once a week (4am for me)?

Naaah, its bad twitch content discoverability.

Worth noting about the electric car story: Izhmash manufactures (or has in the past) cars.

The car that it's based off was one of theirs.

It's not unusual for soviet enterprises (for lack of a better word) to make a whole bunch of unrelated stuff. e.g. the USSR post office was the #1 producer of bricks in the soviet union.

I don't care about which platform WAN Show is streamed on but Linus doesn't seem to realise (or failed to mention) that the 100,000 $ workstation stream attracted a lot of people because it was mid to late afternoon in Europe. I've never watched WAN Show live because it's always at 2/3 AM in the morning in most of Europe. I would obviously expect LMG to monitor analytical data on viewership per continent, but I would imagine that the European viewerbase can't be so small as to not even factor in their platform consideration - quite the opposite in fact.

Edit: failed to mention the bottom line: maybe Youtube would work best for WAN Show, but Linus shouldn't expect to have 20k+ viewers like yesterday's workstation stream just by switching platforms. Unless he also moved the WAN Show to noon PT/PST, but that sort of defies the point of WAN Show.
