Vivo's Selfie Sniffs out Snoops

TL;DR

Vivo Nex's retractable camera is being used in an a surprisingly interesting way... allowing even the non-tech savvy to know when apps on their phone are using the Microphone or Camera. Any app accessing either will cause the camera to extend out of the case, providing an obvious clue.

My Opinion:
I personally find this interesting. It definitely shows that apps access permissions outside of when they're SUPPOSED to use them. For example, anytime I turn on my GPS, even if I don't have the app running, apps like Facebook will instantly request access to my location (tested using Privacy Guard on LineageOS). Honestly, it should be easier for users to see what apps are accessing what permissions at any giving time at a glance of their screen, but we're not there quite yet.

It still sucks that my old Android 4.4.4 phone was more capable of blocking specific app permissions after installing them than my Android 7.1.1 phone.

This is a hardware fix to something that should be a software problem.

Or a custom ROM that can deny permission to anything that has no business touching the camera.

For some permissions, (rooted) 4.4 does give you more control than stock 5+, but for the camera in particular the apps request access at runtime, and you can revoke it at any point from the app's settings.

A pop up microphone would probably be even more enlightening though... :P

Not necessarily. You know that the app pinged the selfie camera for some reason, but not necessarily that it activated it. This could be quite common for apps that you’ve given permission to access your camera.

That's why I always customize the permissions for every app installed on my phone, and only grant it what's absolutely necessary for it to run (also why I would never let Facebook come anywhere near my computers or my phone).

And it's also a standard feature on a vast number of devices... maybe every laptop with a webcam?  I can't be sure of the latter of course, but I know it is common to have a light.  Definitely not an apple-specific feature.

 

As for this story, I had never though about that but it makes a lot of sense.  You can think what you want about the people who put tape or whatever else over their webcam, but this to me seems like the benefit (if any) of that, combined with the benefit of not looking like you do that, combined also with the benefit of allowing you to learn over time if you actually need to.  Basically just an all around good thing.

Indeed, it is very common on basically any device with a webcam.

Nowadays, certain laptop manufacturers start to add a built-in webcam "shutter" to their devices just for this reason.
