Apple lets telegram update their app to comply with GDPR

Telegram first fell afoul of Russian authorities when it refused to release its encryption keys to the nation’s Federal Security Service (FSB, one of the successor agencies of the Soviet Union’s KGB) as required under “anti-terror” laws passed in 2016. In April, Russian courts ordered the service to be blocked nationwide, which authorities eagerly if incompetently tried to accomplish by blocking millions of IP addresses associated with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud servers.

I'm a bit confused about why Apple blocked telegram updates worldwide if they only have to block it in Russia. Apple seemed to be a company that understands the importance of privacy when they refused to build a backdoor into their phones for the FBI but blocking an app for encrypted messaging from updating worldwide when Russia only wanted a nationwide ban seems to contradict that. I also wonder if Apple gave their encryption keys to the FSB if they asked for it. I guess if telegram gets fined for not complying with GDPR apple would be the ones to pay it since they are blocking the update.

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

It depends exactly what specific they are blocking and why.   For example they may not be actively blocking changes that are required for GDPR compliance per se,  but telegram might be trying to push other updates through at the same time (like a backdoor) causing apple to block the entire update.   It wouldn't be the first time a company has done something dodgy and tried to blame the carrier for the issues. 

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

The move from Russia’s Roskomnadzor is a stupid one imo because even Russian officials themselves use Telegram’s end to end encrypted messaging system

Let me get this straight. Apple doesn't open up an iPhone from a known terrorist for the US gov but blocks an app from being updated because Russia threw a hissy fit? Not to mention the shit they are pulling in china...I'm confused.

So still no actual explanation as to why they blocked it from being updated... I really would love to know the reason.  I've never heard of a company acting like this before - keeping an app available but preventing the devs from updating it.  It's a very strange tactic that could only serve to annoy and endanger the users, while doing nothing to actually accomplish what was asked (block access to it).

They blocked steam's app just a few weeks ago because it somehow competed with Apple? It's very strange and I was looking forward to using it a lot

Yeah that was a strange one as well, but that was just blocking an app, something I'm sure they and Google and others do by the hundreds on a regular basis.  This was just preventing an existing app from being updated.

Knowing what telegram stands for I highly doubt it was blocked on the grounds of telegram trying to slip in something bad for the users, but at this point we really can only speculate.  It's a strange coincidence that this all happened at the same time as the Russia thing though, so between that and Apple not just saying why they did it, it all seems a bit strange.

Almost like the PR would be bad for either so no one is saying anything?   They are both companies that have to look after their bottom line and the bottom line is more important than ideals/business relations.

As an avid Telegram user, it's quite apparent that Durov and his team do not care about iOS as a platform. The android application has gotten, and always will get, updates and new features first. Durov claims to be a champion of free speech and against censorship... unless you use iOS in which case there are swaths of public groups and channels blocked for "distributing adult content." I realize that such things are against Telegram's TOS, and it is well within Telegram's right to do this, but these groups are nonetheless accessible on android, PC, and the Mac DMG. Only on iOS and the Mac App Store is this behavior restricted, while apps like Reddit and Tumblr allow such adult content (if not WORSE adult content) with the toggling of a setting. It's also interesting to note that both those apps are 17+ rated, where Telegram is rated 4+.

 

I find it difficult to believe this was anything but a dig on Apple users.

If it was an apple thing, then I wouldn't be able to view adult content on Reddit or Tumblr either. Apple has rules, and agree or disagree, you have to follow them to have an app listed on the store. But Apple does have double standards a lot of times, just look at Steam Link: it's not the first to do something like that yet, it can't be released on iOS while others remain untouched.

All of the platform where Telegram operates don't have an over zealous corporation wanting to control everything and anything as a gatekeeper to the platform, iOS does (and Telegram on Mac doesn't get exclusively distributed through the mac app store).

And just look at this thread, even if they try to comply to every apple guideline they still get the shaft.
