Just a quick question.... Is this hosted in the server in Linus's closet?

I think Crunchy was replying to your question because it somewhat implies Linus' closet in his house. The server room in the main LMG building is probably where the forums are, or they might be hosted offsite by another company.

I believe Linus said it was for cloud and mass storage. So videos could get thrown on there in case editors wanted to edit outside the office, and also serves as a backup server. I forget the exact reasons for having the Petabyte, but they aren't too hard to find.

I would honestly be surprised if the forums as well as linusmediagroup.com weren't locally hosted.

Makes sense. I was referring to it as linus's closet sort of as a joke, because he spends so much time in there... *Rgb server cough cough*

I'm pretty sure forums are hosted by actual hosting company. For security reasons mainly. But I'm not sure if physical location is in US or Canada. That hasn't been disclosed.

They are hosted by an actual company all right, but I remember that someone (WIndspeed or Colonel I think?) said they were hosted in the US. But I may be old and senile.

That could be from my knowledge. But its based on something Windspeed has posted back in 2013-ish. After forums were moved off garage server and there were some downtime issues. Someone even got approx location back then, but all I can remember it was US location.

 

Mortis has since hinted that forums aren't located in US anymore. But nothing that I could confirm with quote.

Uh, people? All you have to do is look at the bottom of each page to see the forum host is Invision Community. It's a link that will take you to their website. They are headquartered in Virginia but I didn't see on their website where their servers are located.

Why would a big company like Invision disclose the locations of their servers? Like Linus said, it's an actual datacenter where the forums are hosted. The datacenter likely isn't limited to just this forum, so if there was a huge breach or anything, a lot more data would be at risk.

 

Or say maybe someone bombed the place. It's just not a good idea to disclose the locations of big important servers.

Typing in the URL to whois IP shows Cloudflare.

 

I'm no expert but even if this was just a text based forum, it would be a lot of trouble and extra expense to maintain in a personal datacenter.

My apologies; I wasn't clear. I should have specified the site didn't say what country the servers were located in, something that could be a good marketing bullet point (something many companies use). Besides, as AshleyAshes pointed out, Invision is just the forum software and may or may not supply the servers.

Though, to be clear, Invision also offers it's OWN hosting for it's software that you can also pay for, but you can also licensing it and host it where ever you want.

While this was already explained, usually "Powered by" doesn't mean same as "Hosted by/at".

Cloudflare is anti-DDoS service used to mask real IP. Usually when people claim they've found forum IP, its actually closes Cloudflare server to their location.

Didn't claim to have found any IP. Just stated that it goes to Cloudflare (which yes is a web security company.)
