I have witnessed the forum for a few months now.

 

The staff and procedures have improved quite a bit. Much more relaxed environment. Mods and Admin have been great. 

 

They don't even ban anyone! Even if a guy wants to get banned, they make them ban themselves with a helpful how to via their profile. lol. 

 

First time I read the thread title.... in my head, Mother Funkers on the forum. I thought I'd fit right in! lol

I know there's a couple people here that have shown some interest in my job. @BombastinatorMiners left early a couple days ago since it was their Friday, so I got to go out and load some trucks.

Normally I'm just a warehouse guy. Was a mechanic. 2 bad hips and a bad shoulder by 24 put me in here. We've got a warehouse for just the mechanics underground that I keep stocked up with parts. Pandemic has made that a pain.

Got a part right now that was ordered in January with a 2 week lead time. Just got told today that the vendor's vendor  is scheduled to ship it this month.

 

Every once in a while I get to go out and play in the mud though.

Mining changed every part of America.  OSHA exists because those seemingly monthly miner deaths in China used to happen in the US too.  Unions too, though the impact wasn’t as massive. It’s still dangerous though.  There was a neat documentary some time ago about coal mining.  Those are some bit tools.

And yet OSHA doesn't come around. We have a special OSHA. MSHA. (Miners Safety and Health Administration)

A lot of things in the past have more of a profound effect on everyday life today than people realize.

I have to wear an ID tag with my name and department on it on my mine belt or hard hat. Mine belt is shaped like a weight lifting belt to help us in every day tasks. I also have to wear a W65 self rescuer. A 2lb hunk of weight that hangs off my belt for use in fires. At 1% CO it gives us 1 hour of breathable air in a fire. Blisters your lips and tongue. Ruins them, but keep you a live. They can get hot enough with enough CO that you burn your lungs.

We have refuge stations all over in the mine. Cramped little pods that we can go in in an emergency. They can be hooked up to a machine and towed out if needed.

Miner's belt. Those two leather straps on the side are what we use for holding random things. W65 goes on one side. I've got a leatherman and a tape measure on the other side. Some people carry cresent wrenches, wrap wrenches, spuds, just about anything on them.

I thought OSHA was first then after the Lucky Friday fire MSHA started as a sub department of them. 

At least that's what we're thought my MSHA
