• Mining cards run custom bios that boost their ability to crunch numbers while also undervolting the cards (reducing heat) so that they are more efficient and make for better profits.

 

 

Now there are some people out there that miss treat their mining cards, but anyone that is serious about it and actually making a dent in the card market is doing what I say above. You could run out and pick up a card used for mining for 2 years.. toss the original bios on it and run it without issue or worry that it would die faster than any other card. Buying a card from a gamer is actually much more risky because you don't know how far or long they pushed those cards or how much thermal cycling has degraded the solder.

 

On top of that a miner utilizes the card much better and in the end isn't that what the card wants? Maybe you should be focusing more on the abused gaming cards.

Another thing people don't seem to understand is many miners UNDERCLOCK there cards as the performance difference is not that huge compared to the power savings. Gamers tend to overclock them and that causes them to run at higher temps. Never mind that people who do this for a living, i've seen AC their rooms where the rigs are kept specifically to keep temps low.

I understand more than you know... I had a GTX950 that would run pretty much all of my games stock on lower settings...but it would have been nice to have some more horsepower. I decided to upgrade the GPU while I upgraded the rest of my system. Also the new GPU does an incredible job rendering!

Take me and my mining rig. Im using a buch of old gtx 480 be cause we all now these cards runs oh so silent and cool. The bedst part are that they only sipping power from the wall and hash rate is extremly high and dirty cheap.

all it means is an enthusiastic "I understand". Don't read so much into it. Because while the card I had would work okay, the thought of overclocking it had crossed my mind. But I bought a different card instead.

I think wearing out the bearings on the fans more specifically...since the computers run all the time. If the card is at idle some of the newer GPUs will idle down or even stop the fan (at least it does on my GTX950 unless it is malfunctioning). On a mining rig I would imagine they would always be spinning at some sort of RPM right? Especially a problem that would get worse if the person doesn't clean the GPUs or run air filtration.

Funny. But here I am wanting to fully mod Witcher 3 with even better graphics, and sweating my 1080 Ti at 2025 / 12200 Mhz cock speeds and it only runs at 70-85 FPS on max settings already lol.

Probably take a very long time though, I only see fan bearings go out on GPU when doing years of folding 24/7.  Though, I abused the crap out of a 7970 for three years with F@H/BOINC/mining, then traded to a chap that abused it for a few more years with BOINC, then it got sold off to a chap and last I heard it still running with its stock fans.  Talk about a tank of a card.

No, it is a Maxwell not a Pascal, but my two 1080Tis and GTX1070 probably one of those could do it if I get frisky.

 

Most I got out of the GTX960 is 1550MHz with maintaining its core temp at 40C on stock volts.  I probably can get 1600MHz if I sit down and BIOS mod it to remove the limiters.  And, it maintains that clock while doing 24/7 folding.  Not many Maxwell GPUs can pull that off because of the load F@H does on the core.  I only know of one chap who has a GTX980Ti that could fold at 1600MHz (talk about a gold chip).  So far, I have not been impressed with my 1080Tis, they throttle like whining babies when they fold....super annoying.

This is a strix 1050 ti so even with that massive core overclock it sits at 45c and is inaudible with full load

O those, nice gaming cards, but I was not impressed with folding/BOINC output.  So, I skipped those GPUs for the time being to use in TC competition on another forum.

Curious, can yours hold its OC steady when folding?  All my experience so far with Pascal is these darn GPUs throttle like crazy when folding.  I am to the point I will be doing the liquid metal mod to mine to see if that corrects up the behavior since Nvidia locked the BIOS on these cards (....darn kill joys).

Havent actually ever tried folding, only mining, and honestly none of nvidias arches seem to hold steady in computational loads

My experience with Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell been good.  Never had much issues with those bouncing around doing compute.

How exactly my need for a new computer for my work be "laziness or impatience"? 

After 8 years my old system died recently WITH the GTS 250 inside. I clearly needed a new one ASAP so I built one. 

But thanks to the miners, after all these years I am still bound to the xx50 series.

 

Though I guess in a way I am also grateful, since due to the GPP I no longer wish to support Nvidia, and thus will switch to RX once the prices drop.

Saying someone else is the reason they have a 1050, either 1. Work overtime, or 2, wait longer and save up more, 1st one requires no laziness and a capacity to do so, second one requirez patience
