Hey guys. Just wanted to start a discussion about a dream laptop I have. It doesn't exist, and I dare say it may never exist, but I just thought it'd be fun to discuss this with y'all.

So imagine. A laptop.

  • Yoga 920 sized with XPS bezels except for the top, to accommodate a 1080p, IR camera for Windows Hello
  • Razer style body minus the green accents and flashy logo.
  • Black, anodized aluminum finish.
  • Lenovo ThinkPad keys with RGB, Razer font, numpad and with/without dedicated macro keys.
  • 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, full HDMI 2.0, 2 each USB 3.1 Type A and Type C, audio jack, microphone jack, full size SD card slot, and fingerprint reader.
  • 1440p IPS Touch Display with Wacom AES Digitizer and 94% AdobeRGB
  • Stereo speakers from -insert favorite audio manufacturer- with 2 subwoofers
  • Graphics good enough for Dark Souls 3 (or your favorite game) on low settings.
  • Hyperthreaded quad core, base 2GHz up to 3.5GHz
  • All day battery (9+ hours normal use, 2+ gaming, ~99Wh)
  • And best of all....360 degree hinge

I'm talking about something so blasphemous and niche in nature that it would be counterproductive to even produce on a mass scale. That, is my perfect laptop.

How about y'all? What absurdities and interesting ideas contribute to your perfect laptop? What do you think of mine?

I have an MSI GS73VR Stealth Pro.. I would definitely not go black aluminum. It sucks. It looks nice until you touch it, or until dust lands on it. Have pets? Then it's even worse!

I'd go more:

  • Dell XPS body
  • 4k IPS monitor with anti-glare
  • 17 inch
  • Cherry MX Red
  • Intel 8700k (until R7 series comes with iGPU)
  • GTX 1070
  • A non-voidable warranty for opening up the damned thing
  • Gratuitous amounts of RAM
  • ZERO RGB (okay, maybe keyboards for dark rooms)
  • M.2 NVMe Raid 5 (atleast 1TB total), and several TB 2.5 inch SSD expansion
  • Zero biometrics
  • No webcam or microphone
  • Built so the charging brick is internal, so all you have to carry is just a small damned cable.
  • and crammed into something as thin and as heavy as the HP Spectre, but with legitimate cooling capabilities (because its the future).

Also, recessed USB ports so my mouse dongle doesn't stick out on the side. I freaking hate that.

Perfect laptop would be something like...A 10k gaming + productivity desktop all into a space less than 2 centimeters. And also, a big and juicy 4k display with the best colors.

  • GTX1070 graphics
  • Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen equivalent
  • 16gb ram
  • 1440p 120hz display
  • nice feeling keys
  • good trackpad
  • 2 each of USB 3.1 A and C, USB 2.0 A, 1 thunderbolt 3 port, a graphics input and output (maybe thru thunderbolt?), SD Card reader

This kind of laptop isn't really all that niche, a Vega + Zen apu in a laptop like you described would be totally within reason.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

how about a laptop where I can replace and interchange everything as if it was a desktop. like I want to be able to change the motherboard, cpu, graphics card, ram, battery, power supply, and screen in case I want to upgrade. it is kind of silly, but still a dream.

As of right now my ideal laptop isn't too much of a stretch. It might actually exist and I just haven't been looking hard enough.

  • 13-14" display
  • Somewhat newish i5/i7 or better
  • 8GB of RAM or more
  • 240GB SSD or more
  • Nice keyboard and trackpad, decent speaker
  • 5+ hours of battery life
  • Internal optical drive as I still burn discs quite often for some reason
  • Somewhat lightweight
  • At least two USB ports
  • Windows

So far, the closest I've gotten in a laptop I've actually used is the older unibody MacBook Pro. Meets pretty much all my needs hardware wise (aside from being a bit heavier than I'd like, but it's not too bad and still livable). Unfortunately running Windows on it natively through Boot Camp cuts the battery life in half, but aside from that, that's really it.

OMG YES! The mag charging should come standard on like every laptop. It's so useful and convenient

Yeah man, it does get dirty. I've had an Aorus X7 for like 4 years and the thing is scuffed all to hell. But the feel and look when it was brand new, cannot be denied. So, I'll add in "scuff proof body" lol

Yeah, you're right. There's definitely something almost like it out there. But for me, what makes it niche is the fact that the whole thing is crammed into a thin chassis like the Yoga 920 with a 360 hinge. And TBH, the Spectre x360 15 and Envy x360 Ryzen almost meet it, except neither has RGB, and the Ryzen lacks Thunderbolt 3 period. That said, I'm actually looking to buy the new x360 15 in spring, and checking out the XPS 15 2-in-1

a laptop that can have a detachable gpu unit between gaming and having more battery for lighter loads and productive things that don't require a gpu

with good enough engineering this could be applied to virtually any sized laptop and the concept still holds

the Venom Blackbook Zero actually suits almost all of my requirements.

16GB ram

large capacity ssd

"good enough" graphics. not for gaming

high battery life

slim

lightweight

doesnt look super gaudy (its only got the logo on the back)

my only complaint is that i would want a 15in instead of a 14in one

you could do it that way theoretically but i was thinking a dual dedicated port that can both directly support battery and gpu(+ its cooling), especially since the majority of space on a gaming laptop is taken to cool the gpu why not reallocate that space for battery when not in use

its just something that came up in my head that would be perfect and mirco gpu's take up far less space than an external gpu thunderbolt as well so the space and weight saving as well as more options between productivity and gaming would be very good for a hobbyist gamer who also travels a lot alone

My dream laptop is something very VERY different.

So I was just a 1080p Screen - honestly, anything higher on a 15" screen is so stupidly pointless to me

a 1070 GPU - avoid the xx80 tax and still get a really solid GPU

i7 and a real i7 not this dual core i7-U crap

Now here is where it gets weird.. I don't want any battery.. No battery at all...

WHY? cause for the few years I owned my MSI Gaming laptop I had two complaints... Weight and noise and the other thing I noticed was I never gamed without my power bring plugged in, Its a gaming laptop you not getting away with battery anyways so just remove it and you go lighter and more room for bigger slower fans.

I've found when I actually need to be portable I'll just use my iPad instead since its just media consumption or taking notes and say what you want but they have epic battery life.

Redstone:
i7-4770 / Z97 / GTX 980 / Corsair 16GB  / H90 / 400C / Antec EDGE / Neutron GTX240 / Intel 240Gb / WD 2TB / BenQ XL24

Obsidian:

MSI GE60 2PE i7-4700HQ / 860M / 12GB / WE 1TB / m.Sata 256gb/Elagto USB HD Capture Card

Razer Deathadder Chroma / Razer Blackwidow TE Chroma / Kingston Cloud2's / Sennheiser 429 / Logitech Z333

I would love to own a laptop with a removable MaxQ slot. I know it sounds silly but what if you were carrying it around and you just want to get maximum life out of it? For instance:

1. When gaming, you could insert your maxq card and run the game at full performance.

2. When you're not gaming but you really want the extra battery life, you could use an adapter to allow something near the maxq slot to connect to an alternate power source for better battery life. This would fit in the maxq slot sort of, but wouldn't inherently charge via the maxq port.
