1TB usb for $20??

MC_MAN

Found this on amazon and really want to know what is in this thing. Obviously its a scam but people in the reviews says it shows up as 1TB but isn't actually that big, and deletes old data as you put more on. But how does it show up as 1TB in the first place.

Thought it could make an interesting video analyzing this little USB, and also maybe a PSA against scam products.

Plenty of these things. Once you use a program to measure size its normally only 2-16gb

I'm not sure what's interesting about it. It's just going to be a flash drive that spoofs its capacity so the system picks it up as larger than it actually is. It's a fairly common thing

The controller is programmed to report 1TB but in reality it'll just keep overwriting itself. They are usually only a few GB.

These drives have their firmware modified . They show up as 1tb despite having that much memory . As far as the controller is concerned , it's a 1TB drive . But when it tries to fill up more than it's actual capacity , it overwrites data , resulting in data corruption.

There's no such thing as a 1tb usb drive. They are programmed to report they are have 1tb of space, but in the end it is usually between 512mb-32gb

How is this even on Amazon, smh :/

I asked myself the same question when there were hundreds of fake Nintendo Switch listings near the time of it's release. I guess it's just hard to keep up with the sheer amount of spam? As soon as one bogus listing goes down another one pops up.

This is a scam, I once purchased one to check it out, it ended up being 16GB, even though it said it was 64GB(£5). Once you reach the capacity of the stick you'll get an error saying it's full or it will do some fake transfer where it deletes all excess files.

Allowing 3rd party sellers to list whatever they want with minimal vetting results in things like this.

They rely on you reading the reviews to avoid it. Reporting it doesn't get it taken down unless you go at Amazon with a mob.

Had a friend have his products ripped off by a Chinese company and listed on Amazon for way less (not to mention inferior) which ended up hurting his brand. Took over 200 negative reviews and lawyers to get it taken down.

So they are outsourcing the suppliers/sellers to the products they offer?

I sincerely would hope that Amazon did a better job filtering good partners from the bad partners, specially with its international reputation, main reason why I asked was because I came by the story of someone who went to the bottom and proved won a refund and free credit even for buying a legit Sony PS3 Controller that end up a forgery.

I wondered how could it be and now I know.

Uhh... No, I don't think you quite get how Amazon works.  Amazon also does FULLFILLMENT.  As in you ship a bunch of YOUR crap into Amazon's logistics system and then sell it through Amazon and this includes rapid shipment by Amazon Prime.  This is where things are labled 'Fullfilled By Amazon'.  The goods are in Amazon's network but Amazon is basically your middleman.

So no, this isn't outsourcing.

The good news is that they don't really care.  About half of everything you do on the internet is running AWS and you arn't going to engage in any kind of boycott so they have no motivation care fuck one about your opinion since you won't take any action over it.

they don't just spoof capacity.

Some will use flash chips discarded by quality control, which will get corrupted data.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch
