Help with my annoying younger gamer brother

ActuallyGoose

Firstly I just want to say, I'm sorry if i come across as a piece of s**t in this. But anyway. long story short, My younger brother (Aged 11) Is ALWAYS Playing the PS4. Raging, being a stereotypical kid on the internet. Now, The reason I have a problem with this is that can't ever stream because he is loud to the point where it comes though my door (Which as a somewhat reliant piece of information is the rooms setup) [See attachment of my magnificent paint skills]. as you can see, the upstairs living room which the ps4 is in, is connected to my bedroom. Basically. All I want is for some help to find a way to either.
A) Shut him up

B) Soundproof/dampen my room/door

C) Both would be nice

D) He also streams and records video. If anyone happens to know a setting to disable streaming on the ps4 (Since he is streaming to 0 viewers at all times, and it uses my much loved bandwidth

I know I probably come across as an annoying bratty 19 year old having problems with his brother, But, I've been dealing with this for around 6-7 years, after finally having my own room for the  1st time in my life. I just want some quietness to let me do what I've wanted for a very long time... P.S It's my fathers PS4, So, I can't just have him move it into his room. If that were possible it would be quite easy indeed..

Solutions other than 1st degree murder:

- move out

- move your brother out

- duct tape (for your brother or sound dampening material on your door)

- show him porn and how to access it on the PS4, he will want some privacy then, especially after you make your mom walk in by accident ...

Colaborate. Play crossplatform games and both could be streaming ;)

You could always break he's headset "by accident".
Just tell him yours broke, use he's for a little while (preferably when he is outside aka not home)

Then follow these simple steps

  1. Using pure manpower.
  2. Grip the cable on the end, and pull on the it. Do not break it off, just make it disconnect internally.
  3. Make sure it doesn't show signs of force or damage.
  4. When he comes home you give him the headset again.
  5. I'd advice just walking away without a word, he'll say it doesn't work. Just blame him for plugging it in wrong or forcing it!
  6. Profit!

On a more serious note :

Either just go to your parents and tell them he's acting like a real douche online, I know I would've been in trouble if I did that at age 11.

Explain to him in a very calm & simple manner you need the bandwidth now, but that he can use it when you are not streaming.

About the raging, ask him if he'd like it if you screamed that loud and annoy the entire household.

If he says yes you'l actually do that; just act the way he does. After 1 week ask him again. If he isn't bothered just blacklist the PS4's mac address on the router. That'll work unless your dad wants to play online.

As a last resort sneak onto the PS4 and change he's password, try getting in. It is probably easy enough to guess or you know it already. If you just ask him at the right time he'd probably tell you without even thinking. Younger kids tend to do that.

I'd honestly go and talk first, I get why you hate him right now.
If my brother acted like a real Grade A+ ayhole online I'd probably punch him to death until he acts like an reasonable human being online.

It could work, problem being : Sony. (Not hating on them, I use a PS4/PS3 myself as my main consoles)

There are barely any crossplatform games for the PS4.
As for streaming at the same time, you run into bandwith limitations.

My connection is a 20MBps upload. (200MBps download) If I stream and game I use about 7MBps.

Considering that is the highest upload you can get in Belgium I can praise myself lucky and stream with 2 people.

But most people either do not have the router to support that much traffic, or just do not even have the speed from the ISP.

When the PC is acting up haunted,

who ya gonna call?

I was planing to make some DIY sound absorption panels myself so that I could isolate the sounds between rooms better, but I still haven't gotten around to doing it yet so I cannot provide a first person account of how well it would work if at all. (Anyone here have personal experience with these types of panels?)

An example:

Accoustic panels only help with reflections, they are not all that effective at stopping noise from getting to another room. You just need mass to stop sound from getting out of/into the recording area. So something like building a second room of sorts around your desk or gaming area that will add another layer of plywood or drywall that the sound has to pass through first. Look into something called a whisper room. It's a little overkill for what you're looking for, but it will give some tips on how to stop the transfer of noise.

I don't stream myself, but I got some issues with sound from sources such as washer/dryer and live in a duplex (Don't want to disrupt the neighbors).

Some cruddy paint skills:

That's another issue to deal with. For something like that, look into getting them off of the floor a bit using something like a rubber mat and make sure it's away from the wall to prevent it from banging. That will prevent vibration directly from the machine. Other than that, it's not an easy thing because you don't really want to enclose your washer and dryer in an effectively airtight room as it will make doing the laundry into an annoying task.

Seeing a lot of really good options and opinions here. I might have a talk with him tomorrow, But he's the kind of kid to say something and then 5 minutes later just do what you asked him not to. So that may not work. I wish that Sony just had a setting to disable streaming, and I wish I had a way to make him quiet his high pitched ear piercing voice from echoing into my room. I thought about getting one of those things on the bottom of my door to try and see if that works

Why not just soundproof your wall (and door)? It's not that hard nor expensive to do.
You can even do it with empty egg cartons or a curtain.

or

Get a louder speaker :D

given yours and his age, I'm guessing it's not just you two in the house. speak to your parents about it, either they already know how loud he is, or they need to know and do something about it. Also since you're not paying for the internet it's not your business how it gets used and shouldn't go messing with the router or PS4 settings. Again, speak to your parents about it, if he's not going to listen to you, he will listen to your parents because there is one thing they can do that you cannot. Ground him, or take away the PS4, which the threat of losing the console hanging over his head if it keeps up, it will change his behavior in a hurry

I wasn't aware that there were cheap alternatives to sound proofing, and the pain problem is that my parents (As this is a new house) Won't exactly let me just do what I want to the room, Hell, I'm not even allowed to hang any of my paintings I used to have in my old room. Also I probably should have stated, I do pay for a majority of the Internet, 60%. And my headphones are already quite noise isolating. But my mic pics up his yelling and every sound he makes just as well as I do. I might as well not even have a wall between us (Unsure if that's him being loud or just a design flaw. Apparently sound doesn't escape my room quite as easily though)

Also all of the posts about "talking to my parents". I've talked to them countless times, they say once "Keep it down" or sometimes even just ignore me. They are the kind of parents that are kind of just using the console as a baby sitter

Then I would say go into the router and block the ports that the PS4 streaming service uses, or just set up MAC filtering during a certain time frame while he's using it, and have it shut off when your dad wants to use it

EDIT: looks like you can stream to multiple sites from the PS4, so I would just use MAC filtering. Should be some sort of parental controls section in the router control panel, or just manually block the PS4 MAC address.

You can't disable the share button on the PS4 outright but you can change the function

A) Soundproof him by making a soundproof box and putting him in it.

B) If A's done, it's cheaper

C) See A

D) Get your own internet connection, or pay the difference for a speed upgrade if possible?

New homes in most places are made like cardboard. Don't expect much, thats kinda why your parents dont want you to hand your pictures up, they fear the extra weight might bring down the $10 house down xD

Just a crazy idea here, but what about a wall of matresses/pillows/soft things in front of that wall to dampen the noise coming through?

P.S. If you pay for 60% of the internet, I wouldn't advise against changing router settings to block his streaming.

First thing I would do is get your brother off streaming until he's older... as paranoid as it sounds there's a bunch of dodge stuff that happens online.

I would cap the bandwidth through the router and set your PC to top priority, that should solve that. If your brother is screaming into the mic at 11 then he really needs to get outside...

That's an F in the profile pic

1.) Talk to your parent about the ongoing issues with your brother. I am not sure how you should be tackling that point. An 11yo boy screaming at people online seems to be quite common these days but honestly should not be happening. I don't have kids yet so, I don't know!
2.) Expose the streaming bandwidth issue using words they will understand and the money involved in that. It's quite easy to lose people in technology terminologies.
3.) Make your point regarding the PS4 streaming port filtering and, if you get the green light and you are comfortable enough (and I'm sure you are), make the change in the router.

4.) Make sure your brother knows what's going on too and let your parents explain the situation to him. You don't want to lead the charge on that one, that's their decision not yours even if you did propose it.

5.) Propose solutions for your environment and try to negotiate with them.

More importantly, be upfront with them on everything. If you block stuff without having them in the loop, it will just end up in a messy argument down the road.

Parenting differs from one family to an another. Some regulate, some don't, some should. We don't know any specifics but if your younger brother is having tantrum playing too much video games, maybe they should be looking into that. My parents never enforced any rules regarding playing video games but I was a shy kid, quiet, had good grades and never had any arguments with anyone back then. They did not have any reasons to do so. In retrospect, maybe they should have put limit on so I could participate in more school activities and stuff.
