Iphone X fragile?

And going by some of the posts people have made it out like it the most fragile device ever so I thought I would add to the discussion and more so make a point of it mostly likely not being as bad as the 4/4s. Some people no doubt are commenting without actually seeing testing done (with proper comparisons so they know it it fares compares to phones they know).

It really just comes down entirely to luck. Luck in the manufacturing process of the glass (in terms of number and severity of defects) and luck in the way the phone lands (and avoiding putting enough strain on those defects).

 

EverythingApplePro did a bunch of drop tests and his X came out unbroken while other drop tests show different results. It really just comes down entirely to getting lucky. The only way to really talk about the durability of any phone is to drop hundreds of them, but then you also need to have large sample sizes from each production batch and those drops still only show how that specific batch will handle drops on average under those specific conditions. TL;DR don't drop your phone and actually attempt to take care of your shit.

Because people are careless. My micro-b cables from 7 years ago are still working fine today.....yet so many people seem to go through them hourly.

99% carelessness, 1% bad luck.

 

There are occasionally defective glass sheets. But by and large, people who crack their phones, do it because they dropped it without a case.

There are occasionally defective glass sheets. But by and large, people who crack their phones, do it because they dropped it without a case.

Still seems to be generally an iPhone exclusive problem. Are iPhone users generally more careless? I've yet to see that many high end Android smartphones with cracked screens. And I see roughly an equal distribution of these handsets every day while on transit and campus.

The amount of people that will grab a phone by the port while charging drives me up the f'ing wall. And then complain that their port or charger doesnt work anymore.

I do that a lot. But the old school iPod connector is pretty beefy and at least has some sort of locking mechanism.

Without seeing actual statistics, I would be cautious before drawing that sort of conclusion.

 

I've seen cracked screens in all variety of phones: iPhones (old and new), Android (low-end, mid-range, high-end), even Windows Phones.

 

Most cracked iPhones I've seen tend to be older models, 4/4s, and 5/5s. Many people buy these used as a "low end" iPhone, years after they were released. So that will "skew" the results, since Apple doesn't release "low end" new iPhones.

I've noticed that iPhones tend to get broken more compared to ALL Android phones, but when compared to phones like the S8, and other high end flagships, I notice a similar distribution. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that cheaper phones tend to use thicker glass or some plastic-composite for the screen, as well as a plastic body with larger bezels and/or glass set further back in the phone. I think there is also a different focus with cheaper phones in terms of the glass they use -- more flagship phones use harder glass and thus are more scratch resistant, but that also means they're more prone to cracking.

Cheaper android phones tend to have plastic screens, which is more durable compared to glass (yet not as pleasing to look at or use).

Considering most manufacturers get glass that is stronger than the previous revision, and make it thinner (which is especially a problem with Apple). The screens probably just as fragile as previous iPhones (which is ridiculous when you think about it).

This seems to be the classic tech forum thread: take a vulnerability in an Apple product, exaggerate it, and attack Apple for promises it never made (even though it is overselling things in this case).

 

It's glass.  Even the latest glass formulations break if you drop them from a sufficient height.  It's not Apple's fault if you don't understand how physics work.

I had the 4S until 2013! Also glass front and back. Didn't have a scratch on it; I use a case.

I had dropped it several times; but never from 6 feet. If I had it would be my own fault for it breaking; and that used a weaker type of glass as well.

I'm not sure why people are surprised it would break from that distance, or without a case.

honestly screw all glass backed phones, one of mine cracked as it slid out of the pocket of my jeans when they were on the floor, other than for less attenuation, aluminium and fiber reinforced polymers, are the best materials for phones.

In all the years of owning a smartphone which is almost 7 years I have never dropped my phone. NEVER. I don't get how. I also always have a case on it.

Doesn’t matter how durable the glass is. It’s still glass.

 

I still hate glass as a phone material. It looks pretty when clean under nice lighting but it’s probably the most impractical material for a phone.

 

And come on guys. $1000 phone. You should give it some protection, especially since it costs an absolute fortune to repair it when you didn’t apply for AppleCare+

It happens occasionally -- you grab it quickly and don't get a good grip and it slips, or you fall, etc...

I'm not a huge fan of the glass either -- I would much rather it be aluminum (or titanium), but whatever. 

 

As for the whole case thing.....I got the X because I wanted the bigger screen in a smaller body -- otherwise I would've just stuck with my 6s+. If I put the X in a case, then it's about the same size as a 6s+ and thus defeats the purpose of getting the X (actually the 6s+ would be better in that scenario since it would have a bigger/wider screen).

This is probably a good part of the reason the IPhone 7 Plus is still selling like crazy. You can actually use it without a case. Its actually outselling the 8 plus. Theres a reason Apple went to an aluminum alloy frame a few years back. Glass breaks, duh. Now thanks to Apple trying to keep up with Samsung were back to glass.

 

No one in their right mind would use a 1000 dollar iPhone X(or 950 dollar note 8) without a case. Except maybe the rich who have money to throw away.

 

As fragile as the X is, its still more durable than the Galaxy S8, which is not only the most fragile phone ever, but because of its curved sides cant really have a tempered glass screen protector, and cases are just awkward for it. I think the Galaxy line is complete junk since they went with a glass back and curved sides.
